Carolyn, if it was a summer day we would be under a red flag warning with the gusty, offshore winds. But its brought very Clear Conditions to the by and temperatures are in the 20s in the north bay. I have averaged in between the inland valleys where you are in the 40s and called it in the upper 30s for most of you. But elsewhere, we are in the 50s. It is very mild. Upper 50s to near 60 degrees by noontime. It is 59 right now half moon bay. Concord, you are 8 degrees warmer than you were yesterday. So we, once again, are on our way to above average highs with numbers well into the 60s, perhaps some records near 70. A quiet evening tonight but cooler air heads our way. Does it bring think rain . Does bring a couple chances. Ill have the accuweather sevenday forecast in a few minutes. Thank you, lisa. Weather is having a big impact elsewhere. New yorks jfk airport is open again after a flight from toronto skidded off the runway into the snow after landing early this morning. No one was injured, but the incident, coupled with snow and ice, forced the airport to shut down for more than two hours. Social media images show Port Authority police shoveling snow to help that plane get back on track. Laguardia was also shut down for a while this morning. It has reopened, but there are flight delays due to the weather. Other major eastern parents with flight delays are new york, philadelphia international, washington, dulles and detroit where delays of three hours are reported. And checking bay area airports, heres a live look at sfo where delays and cancellations are affecting travelers returning from the holidays. You see there sfo reports 14 Flight Cancellations and some flight delays due to the extreme Winter Weather back east. Oakland International Reports no delays. And san jose also reports all flights on schedule this morning. Lifethreatening cold weather is moving into the midwestern states. Abc News Reporter news has details from chicago where they are expecting yet another foot of snow. After days of dealing with intense snow at freezing temperatures, the midwest is about to get right back on the winter roller coaster with temps from iowa out east dropping fast. My hair froze this morning so that was shocking. An additional 8 to 10 inches of snow expects to fall tonight and then the below freezing temps set in right in time for the beginning of the work week. Officials are working exhausted travelers, who have been hanging out at airports this weekend, to be cautious. This Spirit Airlines plane heading for vegas skidded off a runway at ohare last night, giving 145 unhurt passengers a terrifying start to their weekend. I had to get out yesterday and our flight got cancelled. Icy highways packed with red brake lights and littered with overturned cars and trucks in this winter wicked weather. Travel is not the only thing dangerous. Its so cold the cup of boiling water are instantly freezes in midair. Experts stress this more than dangerous, that frigid air can be deadly. Minnesotans are accustomed to cold weather but talking about temperatures 50 below and 60 are degrees below, just five minutes of exposed skin at those temperatures can have serious consequences. Jahi mcmaths family is still working to move the 13yearold out of the Childrens Hospital in oakland but they have very little time left. The clock is ticking. Abc7 News Reporter nick smith brings us the latest. A group of motorcycle riders stopped at Childrens Hospital oakland to lend emotional support to the family of jahi mcmath. The 13yearolds grandmother said jahi is responding to her touch. I said, hey, jahi, and she moved her legs and arms. Heart is beating good. Shes warm and she looks beautiful. This is the best glow ive ever seen her have. Do you think she understands whats happening . Yes, i do. I know she do. They cleared a legal hurdle on friday. The hospital and family reached in agreement to let a Critical Care team transfer to a ventilator provided by the family. This will allow them to transport her to a facility they say is interested in giving her the care she needs. Amari, her uncle, said they are. Making progress. We are moving in the right direction. Weve had small victory after small victory and its leading in the right direction. An almeda county superior court judge ruled that Childrens Hospital oakland can remove her from the ventilator on tuesday at 5 00 p. M. But the family has not given up, vowing to place her in a facility that will continue her care. That will treat her like the human being that she is and not some deceased body like Childrens Hospital has been calling her. The superior judge okayed the move as long as the mother assumes all responsibility for what happens during the transfer. Two hospital physicians and three outside doctors deemed jahi brain dead. The family has not identified a transfer facility or a Critical Care team willing to move jahi. In the newsroom, nick smith, abc7 news. This all began last month when jahi mcmath underwent surgery at Childrens Hospital on december 9th and shortly after went into cardiac arrest. The next day a c. T. Scan revealed swelling in twothirds of her brain. On december 11th she was declared brain dead. The family then began a legal fight to keep her on the ventilator. The order to keep her on the ventilator ends tuesday at 5 00 p. M. A sevenyearold girl that was abducted outside her home friday night is said to be in good spirits after being reunited with her family. They live in antioch. This man, david allen douglas, is under arrest. Police say he has no connection to the family. They say he followed them home from a Walmart Store earlier in the day. A Good Samaritan who spotted douglas and recognized him from an amber alert, recognized his car and got a Police Officers attention. She said being josey paid off. That could be your daughter or niece or it could be someone close to you. Good. But the witness lashay burks honked her car horn to get the attention of the nearby officers. Investigators are trying to determine whether the girl was the victim of a sexual assault, which is why we are no longer identifying her. Relief for another oakland family after their child disappeared yesterday for four hours. That was yesterday. Fiveyearold Darryl Carter iii was nowhere to be found around 3 00 p. M. When his mother went to pick him up at the recreation center. A search party went block by block looking for darryl. He was finally found at a neighbors house just before 7 00 last night. An arrest has been made in connection with the 2010 killing of a german tourist near San Franciscos union square. The u. S. Marshals service picked up 21yearold devonte laws after he was spotted in hayward on thursday. Hes charged with being an accessory to the murder of the elementary teacher visiting the from germany. They said the victim was caught in the crossfire of two rival gangs. Six other suspects have also been arrested and charged with murder. Residents in eureka are holding special Services Today to remember a beloved priest who was murdered new years day inside the rectory. Three vigils will be held today at st. Bernard church for reverend eric fried. Parishioners are still trying to cope with his killing. The sightings and attacks of southern colorado are on warning to not leave small children or pets outside unattended. Back in sun valley, they say the big paw print and video left behind should be a wakeup call for neighbors. The family is devastated. We are still looking for closer. To know what the option was and where he is. In new york. A bobcat was spotted in Contra Costa County last week. Wildlife experts say theres not much danger. Several new laws that went into effect january 1st protect colorados big cats. Hunters are now banned from trapping bobcats in southern colorado. Similar protections will soon follow at other national and state parks with bobcat populations. Another law limit when and where game wardens can shoot and kill Mountain Lions. In 2013 we made Great Strides if protecting our environment and focusing on protecting some of the most vulnerable species in colorado like the bobcats. And this has allowed the numbers to climb well into the 50s for San Francisco, half moon bay. But redwood city has been sit manage the 30s. Oakland 49 with son hose out of the 30s. 43 for you and los gatos 45. The view from tam, it is very clear. We are looking at more breeze up top of mt. Tam. But down in the valleys look at that, 32 santa rosa with 42 in napa. 50 in novato. Not a great distance between the cities. But you notice that you are feeling the warmth over in concord at 54. Just about 30 miles away in livermore 44. So big temperature change and look how blue the water is and a beautiful shot from emeryville this morning. Clear and breezy in the hills. Sunny and mild today. A few records are possible. Cooler this week. This is the winter line, winter headline for the week. The chance of showers, well, we have to hope for that and keep our fingers crossed. Each if we did see anything, it will be very, very light. So with temperatures near 61 degrees half moon bay, we are 14 degrees warmer than we were yesterday at this time. We talked about concord and oakland. Much cooler around the north bay. Even san jose about three degrees cooler. Here are the gusty winds, about 28 miles an hour. 22 miles an hour winds here. And the winds over at mt. Diablo, some of the Higher Elevations up to 35 miles an hour. So High Pressure anchored over the eastern pacific. Its not going anywhere. For today anyway. It does weaken tomorrow and that will bring slightly cooler temperatures. Heres what we are hoping for come wednesday, thursday. Not a lot, if we see any rain at all. A state law banning the use of dogs in bear hunting is showing significant results. Last year hunters killed about 1,000 bears in colorado. Seems like a lot but that is a 48 drop from 2012. Dry offshore winds will lighten up throughout the day but it will leave us with warm temperatures today. At our coast, mid60s today. So another day of perhaps a few records falling. Pope francis is making headlines at the vatican with a warning about future priests. Here is is abc News Reporter, Alex Marquart. Reporter in the ten months since he was elected, pope francis has made a name for himself by saying exactly what he thinks. We now learned that the pope reportedly warned young priests must be trained properly or otherwise, quote, we are creating little monsters and then these little monsters mold the people of god. The popes frankness has helped drive his favorability rating to a sky high 92 for american catholics. He has blasted the gap between rich and poor and said you cannot serve the idol of money and the living god at the same time. He recently called unfettered capitalism a new tyranny, riling many. The cardinal of new york had to defend the hope. The billionaire cofounder ever home depot said the popes comments were unsettling. You want to be careful about generalities. He told dolan, rich people in one country dont act the same as rich people in other countries. The pope loves poor people, he also loves rich people. He loves people. That was Alex Marquart reporting. Dolan also says the churchs economic view is somewhere in the middle between socialism and what he calls cutthroat capitalism. But he says its clear that the popes efforts to create a church for the poor is leaving some feeling left out in the cold. Yet another enter taper is thinking about getting in politics. Martial arts star Stephen Seagal is considering running for governor of arizona. He has never been in politics. He stars as a law man in his own reality show businessed in arizona. New york city is considering legalizing marijuana. The governor will unveil an initiative this week during his state of the state speech. It will allow a limited number of hospitals to dispense marijuana for certain ailments. It will be the 21st state to allow medical use of marijuana. A team of bay area doctors and nurses has returned from the philippines after delivering much needed Emergency Care to victims of typhoon. They are sharing a personal look at that experience through videos and photographs they captured during their mission. Heres abc7 news anchor carolyn johnson. Their houses are gone, their livelihood are gone. We lost our loved ones. Reporter for nurse linda, arriving in the typhoonshattered philippines was an emotional homecoming. Unable to reach her family on the island of laati, she landed with other volunteers from stanford not knowing what to expect. I know my sister, her house gone. The children are fine. But minor injuries. There were no food. She was part of an Emergency Response team known by the acronym semper. Its made up from volunteers from stanford and area hospitals. Including emt brandon bond and and a Mental Health specialist along with a team leader colin bucks. They would go to work within hours of landing treating patients in crowded makeshift clinics. Its a matter of getting the supplies, getting people directed to the right areas. There were probably at least 400 people waiting. We were very much overwhelmed by the need. The tenmember team saw several hundred patients a day, taking just brief breaks to eat, sleep and record some of the images of communities struggling to recover together. This is the culture of the philippines, especially in times like this, we help each other. It started raining and i was working on caring for a wound, and the next thing the rain stopped over me and i looked up and there was an individual holding an umbrella over my head inside. That would happen time and time again. The team brought much needed medicine and other medical supplies from the bay area. And we would prioritize the patients by five and younger and then 65 and older. Behind it almost looks like a hillside of patients. A moment i have to catch myself, im here as a nurse. Im here to help, but then theres part of me im here because im one of you. I wish i could do more. But from the suffering emerged an amazing story of resilience. Especially among the thousand throngs of families and kids. At least 75 kids. So i took the group away from the Medical Clinic and started a game of duck duck goose. Theres images of children flying a kite. It was right outside the clinic. These three little boys, a very homemade fashioned kite, running down the street in between the cars, just loving life. And in the middle after disaster of a disaster zone to see the children still just enjoying life and that was an amazing image. Carolyn johnson, abc7 news. A Group Called Friends of nolan park has long opposed the development, and they say its another case of public hand being handed over to a private entity. If approved, it would be one of the largest projects of its kind in colorado. Environmental groups are already promising legal challenges.
