Three quarters of a mile in hayward. Thats gotten worse but a little better in san jose. Mountain view a mile and a half and less than a quarter mile in no sought toe. Clear conditions in the east bay. Downtown not looking so bad but it will take another hour or two. In fact, the fog is going to sit right there over the bay through about 10 00. Then by noontime we are sunny with mainly low to mid60s around the bay. And looking at more fog tonight. A couple of dry days before the rain returns. Carolyn. Thank you, lease a lisa. The nations oldest and San Franciscos largest toy giveaway of its kind kicks off its latest effort this morning. A 5k run is getting underway right now at crissy field sponsored by the San Francisco firefighters toy program. Kera is there to explain exactly how this is going to help fill the need for new toys. Kera. Hey, carolyn. Good morning. What an exciting moment here on chrissy field. Literally just as you send it over to me, 2500 santa hat wearing runners are embark on a 5k called the run wild San Francisco. There are groups of families and friends. They all brought unwrapped toys or monetary donations to support the San Francisco firefighters toy program. It needs toys now early enough to deliver them to children in need. And children who may otherwise go without for the holidays. It has evolved in 1949 when it was just a few firefighters repairing broken toys and bikes for just 15 families. Now 300 firefighters and volunteers distribute more than 200,000 knows to more than 40,000 disadvantaged children in the bay area. Organizers say that this one, i mean, look at this, so much fun. This is the seventh year of the run. Not only is it an enjoyable sunday morning, but its a great way to get the Community Together for a greater cause. Take a listen. We got a lot of people that will be, you know, going for a real fast 5k time but really the majority of time are out here to have a great time. Everybody is going to be wearing the santa hat because we look at all the runners, all the runners are bringing in toys. So we look at them all at santas. We are even shuttle a lot of participants in from around the city on on santa express that we created just to get people down near chrissy field. Its a great run and a good way to start after all the eating from thanksgiving, to do a little run, get back into shape, work off those few extra pounds you might have put on the last few days. Definitely lots of fun but in all seriousness the toy program serves various organizations, shelters are women and children, cancer wards and also a pediatric a. I. D. S. Unit. In other news, fog out there may have played a role in a fiery fatal collision near the carkenas bridge. The crash shut down the westbound lanes in crockett just before 2 30 this morning. The car caught fire with a person trapped inside. Other motorists tried to help put out that fire. The alert has been cancelled but visibility is still very low in the area due to fog. The chp is investigating a fatal accident on highway last night backed up traffic for hours last night near the airport. It happened near south Airport Boulevard just after 1 00. A pedestrian was struck by cars and killed. The chp immediately closed all the northbound lanes between grand avenue and oyster point. The victim, a woman, died at the scene, leaving investigators with Little Information to go on. It was a female in her mid20s, early 30s at this time, but its all under investigation. We dont know if she was walking across the freeway or dropped off so thats still under investigation. Northbound traffic was diverted around the scene using highway 380 and san bruno avenue as detours. Police say another person was 101 killed on the roads yesterday in san mattio on a hitandrun. Officers arrested a driver who struck a concrete garbage container that threw into the air, hitting a man on south delaware street. He later died at a local hospital. Witnesses say the driver stopped, got out of his car, surveyed the damage and then got back in and drove off. Police later arrested him at his home. New this morning San Francisco police are investigating a collision between two s. U. V. S that injured two people and knocked out power to the area. It was near paul meadow avenue. The collision occurred just before 11 30 last night. The injuries are said to be minor despite all the damage. One s. U. V. Rolled over and another took out a power pole and damaged a house. The power has since been restored. The less are on the scene of a double murder. Officers called to brookdale avenue near short street around 6 00 this morning and thats where they found two shooting victims. Both died later at a local hospital. No names or suspect information has been released. A touching memorial this weekend for a man who was shot and killed by Armed Robbers outside a 711 last week. This morning both suspects are in custody. Rory park pettiford was killed by two men who went on a crime spree november 16th. Friends and family remembered the 22yearold. Abc7 News Reporter john alston was at the service. Reporter hugs and tears outside the campbell funeral home where dozens of friends and family members shared their memories of 22 year rory park pettiford, the young man caught up in last weeks crime spree. I will never, ever get over this. If he were just a friend i would never get over it because he was such a special person. Not just a son but a special person. Every day i have to stop and i have to think about how i miss him, how i cant believe that this is true. On friday night of last week park pettiford was shot to death as two masked men tried to carjack him at the 711 store on south carly boulevard. That night the gunman also shot and wounded a san jose officer after committing Armed Robbery at four businesses. 26yearold jonathan was arrested after a short manhunt but his alleged partner was on the lose until afternoon. That person is a 15yearold boy from san jose who was arrested at an apartment complex in concord. Police have no information on the concord connection or the relationship between the man and the teenager. Thats undetermined yet. Theres nothing that either one of them provided, at least that the investigator shared with me. Rory park pettifords brother announced the arrest of the 15yearold at the Memorial Service today. Me and rory actually grew up with some of the members that are in the San Jose Police force and when they found out rory was the victim, they really pulled out all the stops. Im really thankful that they found both of these gentlemen. Rorys father talked about the 15yearold suspect. Let me say to his parents that i know that you are probably grieving also. Because not only did they take rorys life, but they took their own lives by doing such a heinous thing and my prayers go out to them. Jonathan is in jail on a murder charge that makes him eligible for the Death Penalty in convicted. The juvenile is in juvenile hall. Hes facing homicide and robbery charges. They will determine if the boy will be tried as an adult. Police are not talking about a motive and the 20,000 reward will not be handed out because none of the tips they received led to the arrest. So far firefighters have recovered 100 bodies from the multistory factory outside the countrys capital. 12 people died jumping from the upper floors. And the death toll could rise as the investigation continues. Bangladesh has about 4,000 garment factories, many operating without proper safety measures. The 20 billion in annual clothing exports mostly gets shipped to the u. S. And europe. This Week Congress returns to take on the pending fiscal cliff. Yearend deadline where higher taxes and deep cuts kick in if a compromise havent been reached. The stock markets have been betting early among congress will reach an early compromise, showing gains in this weeks session. But republicans and democrats sound as far apart as ever on reaching a solution. The house of representatives has a bipartisan bill passed by the senate that will spare 898 of taxpayers across america from any income tax bases and 98 of businesses. And end the balmy stretch of string like weather, although we have a couple days of it. Although our mornings are definitely changing. As this area of High Pressure weakens, we are getting the fog. This is sunny lake tahoe where temperatures are in the 20s. Going to a high of 54 today. And closer to home, vollmer peak you see the haze. It is sunny in the east bay. They havent had any fog. We are looking at some of the better conditions here although we will see the cloud deck erode. It is getting a little worse for our friends in hayward. Live doppler 7hd right now. We will look at raindrops headed our way in the next 48 hours. Right now its the fog thats been all over the bay and its sitting right over the bay. And the visibilities are worse in the north bay from napa to no sought toe, less than a quarter of a mile and the airport delays, although sfo improving at 2 miles. Five miles along the coast. You see the south bay and the fog around hayward but the better visibility even from the delta which usually is a pretty foggy place. In the next hour or so we will continue to see the improvement from the north bay. The south bay is going to lag behind a little bit, as well as parts of our east bay. It could take ward 10 00, 11 00. By noontime everyone will be sunny. But its been a chilly morning with some 30s but now those numbers of replaced in the 40s but with less sunshine today due to all that fog. We will see limited warming. It will be cooler out there. 50 in fremont, 52 Mountain View and 54 in San Francisco and Half Moon Bay. Highlights, areas of dense fog this morning is then the numbers will be responding to that sunshine and we will see afternoon high hads a little warmer than we were yesterday. So thats the a little cooler, i should say, than we were yesterday. That is the good news. We will look at conditions really changing in the next couple days as the High Pressure weakens. We will look for the cooler temperatures and the Rainy Weather to head our way come overnight tuesday into wednesday. The weak High Pressure with us. It will stay with us the next 24 hours and then slide to the east. As it does, a pretty strong storm system will be developing in the pacific northwest. Thats going to bring up first a subtropical moisture and its going to start with some pretty good rain and win come tuesday night. So we are looking at colder systems behind this one. But monday should be dry. Thats always good for your back to work monday. Tuesday mostly cloudy and by late tuesday here we are, 4 00 in the morning, theres the front already pushing into sonoma and marin county, making for a sloppy commute on wednesday. We are going to get hurt and on Small Business saturday, a day to support your local mom and pop store, shoppers found a way to avoid the crush at the mall. We have a threeyearold and this is onestop shopping. We got everything we need at once. They are wrapping our gifts right now and you miss the crowds. I mean, no crowds. West side kids, a local toy store in manhattan, has been in business for more than 30 years, giving children a safe place to play and learn. Well, this is like where you can learn lots of electronic things. In memphis, she said her customers prefer this intimate set to go the door buster deals at the bigger stores. They know that whatever the Small Businesses make goes back to the community faster than, say, a big box store. Even president obama took his daughters to a local bookstore in northern virginia. With the stillstruggling economy its hitting nonprofits hard and some of those dedicated to helping others, not just this time of the year but all year long, now they need a little help themselves. In contra kosta county we learned about a tray angle neighborhood. Its a beacon of hope for the homeless and drug addicts across the bay area. Walk into the doors of the Bay Area Rescue Mission and you know right away this isnt your Typical Center serving the homeless and drug addicted. Trying to do everything your own is not going to work. You need god. This place offers that. You have to have a new mindset. People tell you that you shouldnt do it, but nobody tells you why. I get to be a sounding board for the ladies who have gone through the same things that i have. Thirty years ago i was a homeless cocaine addict myself. When John Anderson speaks, they really listen. And its not just because he went from being a successful businessman. At age 29 i spent 65,000 a year on cocaine and my life was falling apart. I walked away from everything and ended up homeless on the streets in san diego. Job skills training, education, family skills, life skills, helping people so they have the tools so when they are ready to leave the rescue mission, they can be successful. Sherwin harris came here from oakland back in 1994 after losing it all to drugs. He remembers exactly where he was sleeping when he decided to change his life. I came just seeking really not a program, but just a place to stay. A place to lay my head and get some rest. Really i thought i was going to go out and have another run. But the lord had other plans for me. More than 8 million worth of food, clothing and other items comes to the Bay Area Rescue Mission every year. About a third of that they keep. The rest they donate to other charities or it goes directly to People Living in this community. We weathered most of the economic challenges fairly well. But here recently the donations really dropped off to the point that we had to lay off five people, five of our staff members, and cutback on expenses the best that we could. He said onefourth of the staff is made up of graduates from the recovery program, and like maxine, what they bring to the table is invaluable. New this morning, birds posing a danger to travelers at the minetta airport will be shot at with guns. City leaders have approved an ordinance change allowing airport staffers to shoot at birds to clear them from the airfield. Birds pose a danger to jets bus they often get struck by planes. They can also get suck into the engines resulting it in planes losing power. If scaring the birds doesnt clear them out, the airport now has permission to load buckshot and shoot them. San francisco and oakland airports already allow that practice. N. A. S. A. Will announce historic news about a discovery on mars in a little more than a week in San Francisco. N. A. S. A. Scientists say the curiosity rover found Something Interesting in the soil. They arent saying what just yet, though they do say it will be one for the history books. It was an on shore push and a weak system thats overhead right now, bringing the low clouds, the fog, the calm winds and the temperatures close to the dewpoint. So from Mountain View to san carlos, visibility anywhere from three quarters of a mile. Palo alto into about a mile here. So right around here from hayward to Mountain View we are looking at the fog just sitting as well into san jose. But as you head north a bit of a break. Oakland is beginning to clear up. Still dense fog from no sought toe to napa this morning while the east bay remains sunny. It will take hour or two. 50 san jose, 54 Half Moon Bay and San Francisco. So the dense fog and then cooler today. On average of two to five degrees because of the fog. We will look for the rainy pattern to begin overnight on tuesday. So heres a look at what you can expect for the next couple of hours. By 10 00, 11 00, the fog pulls back. Still with the west to northwest winds. It is going to be a cooler day today. But High Pressure is still in control for the next several days. Theres that weak system moving overhead right now. And by the afternoon we are looking at still with this High Pressure in control some hazy sunshine and the system is holding off for another 48 hours or so. We will fast forward this through the day on tuesday. We cloud on up by the afternoon. The evening commute looks fine but through the overnight hours thats when we will get the wind anywhere from 15 to 35 miles an hour possible. Higher elevation wes will see gustier winds and theres the front just offshore. We are looking at the rain beginning at around two, three in the morning. Sonoma into marin and just in time for the morning commute. It will be sloppy and slow out there. 65 today down in the peninsula. South bay, palo alto, 66 in san jose with upper 60s and low 70s along the central coast. We will get back into more fog tonight, more sunshine tomorrow, and then you heard about the rain on wednesday. Hopefully the next system comes in, its going to be another strong one but im hoping the snow levels are lower because this is just going to be rain in the sear they have come midweek. I know people who keep their old aol screen names to use them for old time sake, but no one i know pays for them. Aol offers a lot of services and some find benefit, but alex said you dont have to hang to hang on to your aol email address. Or pay to hang on to your aol address. Its relatively easy to downgrade it to a free level. If you are paying for an aol account, all you have to do is log in and go to your account settings and select change my billing plan and downgrade to a cheaper account, and if you want to have a free account you downgrade to free. Even if you dont think you have a paid aol account, its worth your time to pull out your credit card statements. The bill monitoring service, billguard. Com, says it finds customers died for dialup service they thought they had abandoned a while ago. They were charged for it. What i recommend to all your viewers out, there take a look. If you used to subscribe to it, you may very well still be billed and you can take action quickly by calling them up and having it canceled.
