A pedestrian was hit and killed on the southbound lanes of 101 near story at around 3 30 this morning. The Highway Patrol closed down two lanes of the freeway it at the story road on ramp at the time, and those lanes will be closed for several is more hours while the chp investigates the collision. At this time it is not clear why the pedestrian was walking on the freeway in the first place. A settlement this morning for the family of a south bay girl who killed herself after she was sexually assaulted at a party. But this was about much more than the money. 15yearold audrie pott committed suicide in 2012, just a week after she was assaulted. Abc 7 news report erer Leslie Brinkley has more. Reporter at a High School Party in 2012, 15 yearyearold audrie pott drank a potent punch of vodka and gatorade and passed out. She was then sexually assaulted. The three attackers took pictures and shared them with classmates. Days after the photos emerged audrie hanged herself. Three teenaged boys were found guilty, one settled out of court last month. Now closure are for the family as the other two boys agreed to pay 950,000 as part of a wrongful death lawsuit. They had to issue a public apology in court. The apology included admitting audr audrie was not conscious during the assault, that she did not give consent, and she did not invite or encourage the sexual acts. The apology went on to address the suicide saying i also apologize for false rumors about audrie that used to serve and you humiliate her. She did not deserve, nor would any human being deserve, what we put audrie through. The settlement requires the boys to be part of a documentary and to talk publicly about the consequences of drinking, assaults, and sexting. When youre talking about the defendant making the rounds in schools, talking about what they did, trying to educate other kids about what happened and to prevent it from happening again, i cant imagine a better way to accepted a message. Reporter many parents at Saratoga High School did not want to talk about the settlement, but some were relieved. A high level of consciousness among parents now based on this case. Reporter they hope lessons are learned as the pott family released a statement saying they are happy their daughters name has been cleared. In san jose, im Leslie Brinkley abc 7 news. Also developing this morning, a man from oakland is the first reported u. S. Citizen killed in the recent strife in yemen. Our media partner the bay area news group, reports a man died in a mortar shelling. The gas station ownerer was trying to get to his wife and 2yearold daughter, want to go get both of them out of the violence. The council on islamic relations is calling for the evacuation of all u. S. Citizens. A San Francisco supervisor is also joining the call to evacuate americans trapped in that country. Supervisor james kim stood with Community Groups to urge the u. S. To intervene on behalf of some 300 americans who cannot leave the war torn country. Among those trapped is a man from San Francisco. The 26yearold was there working with coffee farmers. His brother is very upset by the lack of help. The u. S. Has three navy ships currently in the area. The u. S. Department, their message to us was that they cannot do anything at the moment and their message to him was to, quote, stay inside and stay safe. He was trying to leave but was stopped by a Militia Group as he tried to board a boat in ayden. This week the chinese navy helped evacuate 225 foreigners from yemen. 8 05 is our time. San Francisco Police chief greg suhr is asking for seven of his officers to be fired for sending or responding to racist, homophobic text messages. We cannot have this had in San Francisco, and we have to do everything to the best of our ability to rout it out and address it. Reporter Jennifer Grant with our family coalition, a resource for lgbt families, believes while the scandal is disappointing, it doesnt reflect on the entire Police Department but could be a turning point. Todays march takes place from noon until 3 00. Police have arrested a man suspected of attacking a homeless man with a metal pipe. Surveillance video shows the violent incident wednesday at larkin near geary in San Francisco. The victim robert perry, was sitting as the attacker walked up and hit perry in the head so hard he dropped the pipe. I was in shock and then eventually i sort of pulled it together and then i called 911 after, well, a bun much of disoriented people were in shock as well watching what happened. Perry is in critical condition. Police spotted the suspect, Arthur Lee Jones in the area last night. He will face attempted murder and aggravated assault charges. 8 07 the time. A martinez man accused of having sex with an underaged girl last year is now also accused of making child pornography. Blake Robert Johnston was arrested last year after he police said an under aged oregon girl faked her own suicide to kol come to the bay area with johnston. Yesterday federal investigators found explicit images on his devices believing he created some of the images and may have had contact with at least three young girls. Police are investigating a possible abduction attempt in concord. This letter was sent out warning parents earlier this week. It says a woman claiming to be a students mother asked for her to be sent to the park inging lot for an appointment. The school contacted the mother and found out it was false. A first of its kind census has documented the comeback of bay area river otters. The effort to count them started with volunteers and now has the weight of Scientific Research as well. Sam is believed to be the first river otter in San Francisco in 50 years. And now, it turns out he has quite a bit of company. There are river otters now in every bay area county, which is wonderful. Reporter after decades of work to clean up bay area waters, a sprinkling of otters began coming back. Now the river otter ecology project has just published a Scientific Study indicatinging those otters are not just loners who have lost their way but families repopulating the bay area. At this point weve had about 1,165 total sightings. Reporter the most Intense Research is in southern and western marin county with evidence of at least 50 individual otters. Thousands of videos taken by motion activated cameras show a lot about otter behavior and how theyre using various habitats. It turns out they are quite adaptable, and you dont have to be a scientist to see they have a lot of fun. Otters are also brave. This this mother is chasing a coyote away from her pups. All the otters in these videos are river otters not the to be confused with their cousin sea otters that live mostly in the ocean. One of the things that make river otters such a Great Research subject is they use all parts of a watershed from the fresh water down to the brac can kish marshes. Reporter kathy paid for the flowers and received the confirmation from amy florist. I show up at the funeral home on the day of the funeral on sunday and i dont see the flowers. Reporter she looked every are where. The flowers never made it to the funeral. Kathy had to tell her family. It was more than the flowers. It was just showing our love and that this is our last respect. I was upset. I was really upset. Reporter she tried to contact the florist but no one picked up the phone. She wondered what if she hadnt been at the service. I would have never known that had he they didnt receive the flowers. Reporter kathy contacted 7 on your side. We found out the florist is not a flower shop in san jose. Its a company in southern california, and it has an f rating with the Better Business bureau bureau. With many customers saying they never got their flowers either. However, after kathy disputed the charge amy florist did refund her 152 right away. And the company emailed 7 on your side saying those flowers were indeed delivers a day ahead as requested but could have been misplaced. The company said there are many reasons why someone might believe the flowers werent delivered at a funeral. They could have been delivered to the flower room and the funeral staff failed to move them to the fawn raluneral service.
