In developing news a double shooting in san jose has left one person dead this morning. Police tell us it was just after 2 00 when officers responded to a report of a shooting on oak street. When they arrived they found two victims in front of a home. Each had at least one gunshot wound. They were taken to the hospital where one of the victims died. The other is expected to survive. Police are still searching for suspects and a motive. Also developing out of san jose this morning, an escaped inmate serving time for child molestation and whom police label as a dangerous man continues to be the focus of a manhunt. Officers say theres evidence from a burglary at an Apartment Building that the inmate was there and that he may have switched his clothing. Katie marzullo reports. Reporter police cars by the dozen, canine units on the ground helicopters overhead. The areas near macarthur,moore park. Look at this man Johnell Carter 511, twob220 and has the name alice tattooed on his neck. Just before 1 30 he escaped the custody of a sheriffs deputy during a retuneoutine exam at valley medical center. If you see him call 911 immediately. Reporter people in the area are on alert. This morning Hayward Police are on the lookout for a man who allegedly tried to abduct a teenage girl. Police have released a sketch of the suspect. The attempted kidnapping happened around 4 00 yesterday afternoon near whitman and sycamore. The 15yearold was walking home from school when a man in his 20s tried to pull her into his car. She fought him off and escaped. Police are looking for a newerer model honda civic with paper plates. People at two libraries in berkeley may have been exposed to the measles. An adult who may have had the contagious virus visited the West Branch Library on february 27th and 28th as well as the central Branch Library on the 27th. The risk for exposure is not strong. However, Health Officials say anyone who visited the libraries on those dates should monitor themselves for symptoms from the next two weeks. Symptoms include a fever and rash. Statewide there have been 132 measles cases since the outbreak began. Oakland police will no longer track dozens of gang members through a 100block city zone. Yesterday the City Attorney dismissed injunctions against two gangs being tracked. She said the police chief will focus on other gang prevention programs given the limited resources of the City Attorneys office. The enforcement started in 2010 to stop 15 members of a gang from associating with other gang members. It was expanded in 2012 to include 40 more members of another gang. The time right now is 8 04. Thats disturbing enough but its really what happened off camera that outraged the police chief. Laura anthony has the story youll see only on 7. We shouldnt be putting our hands on the student. Theres no reason to put our hands on the students. Reporter it happened on january 22nd 2014. A 15yearold freshman had been called to the office at fremont high for a meeting with an administrator as shown on this Office Security video. The student stands there for a few moments before hes approached by two School Security officers who apparently want him to move. Youre going to see a Security Officer right here in the jacket come up and talk to him. The report states that hes asking him to leave the threshold of the door. Reporter the events are described by oakland schools new police chief. Hell push him into this officer. The officer will turn around, put his arm around his neck, put him in this hold. Reporter he is quite troubled not only by the officers use of force but that the video sat in a file for 14 months. Last may this video surfaced showing another School Security officer punching a student in a wheelchair at oakland high. Mitchell was hired and goes on trial next month for felony assault and child abuse. In this case the attorney for the 15yearold is considering a civil lawsuit. Ronald cruz told abc 7 news, quote, there was no reason for the security guards to engage with the stuntddent at all, let alone man handle and choke him. They have no business working around children and should be fired. The two Security Officers are on paid leave picked the outcome of an intensive investigation and dozens of prior cases will be reviewed. Every investigation has been conducted by the department in the last five years. Reporter hell also propose he eequipquip all of his officers with body cameras. A plainclothes chp officer who pulled his gun on protesters in oakland last year has been cleared of any wrongdoing. A picture from the San Francisco chronicle shows the officer point a gun at the camera near lake merritt on december 10th. Yesterday the chp said the officer acted within policy saying his partner was being attacked by protesters so he pulled his firearm. The chief engineer of the new eastern span of the bay bridge insists the bridge is safe despite cracks in the anchor rods. The chronicle reports Brian Maroney told state officials the structure would barely move in a major earthquake even if all the rods that secured it were missing. Hes now Harrison Ford, the survivor. Schools in california will begin administering the common core exam next week. Last year schools had a practice run, but now it counts. While School Districts say the new curriculum is preparing students to be critical thinkers, some are having a tough time adjusting. Lyanne melendez explains. Reporter many of us learned that for the most part school work must be memorized. Thats true to a certain extent. But as part of the common core curriculum, students are being asked to thoroughly understand concepts. And, most importantly, be able to demonstrate that they know what they can do. Reporter San FranciscoSchool District officials sat down to work on examples. In this math question, a student is asked if all the figures on the computer are parallelograms. In the past the answer would have been yes or no. Now the student must explain his or her answer. Getting here hasnt been easy. Teachers have been retrained in the common core curriculum. A lot of the math problems you might not know so in class theyll teach you ways to do it. Reporter but in some schools the use of computers is limited and not every child has one at home. Writing on computers is difficult for me because im new at typing and writing on paper, its like normal for me. Reporter still, next week students in california will begin taking the common core exam. Unlike the old s. T. A. R. Program which took several days of testing, a school will now have from march 10th until the edged of may to conduct its testing. The window is pretty long, like six to eight weeks. Reporter because its so spread out, San Francisco unified will be able to assign one computer to ten students. It is a different way of teaching. It is a different way of learning. The oakland as are rolling out their annual welcome mat for the citys Little Leaguers. Up to 1400 oakland youth are expected to be on hand. Theyll march in parades around the coliseum field, eat lunch and play in the as sponsored fun zone. These are scenes from a previous years event. Oakland has one of the largest Little Leagues in the bay area but just 3 of kids play baseball, something the as are trying to help change. Little leaguers in the east bay will play their first full schedule of games today. 15 Little League fields are on the property in martinez. They were closed because Union Workers at the refoininery are on strike. They reached an agreement the workers would not picket at the field. 600 players on 49 teams have been forced to share three fields because of the strike. Getting out on the baseball diamond or just outside period is a great chance to get away from technology because this is the national day of unplugging. The San Francisco rec and Park Department is sponsoring a get out and play day, so you can get away from social media. This is the sixth year of unplugging.
