Lake Tahoe Wildlife Center is packed with orphaned bear cubs right now. The most theyve ever had this early in the summer. The cubs are getting great care, but no one knows why there are so many orphans. Heres abc7 news news anchor sheryl jennings. There are nine orphaned bear cubs at lake tahoe wildlife care. The only place in california licensed to care for them and they just keep coming. Its been nonstop the last month. This is the newest arrival named brockway. About to get a sedative so the vet can give him a full medical exam. Brockway was found near his mothers body north of lake tahoe. A Good Samaritan left him with a note and a volunteer Organization Called the bear league. The state fish and Wildlife Department gave the okay to transport him to the Wildlife Center. A little thin and lethargic. Brockway is getting some fluids and his prognosis is good. The Wildlife Center is run by tom and sheryl millhan who is have been caring for bear cubs the last 14 years. The bears here now are all five to six months old from all over the state. This summer more bears than usual are showing up in populated areas. Because of the drought. But theres no way to know whether thats why so many orphaned bears have been found. We just havent learned to talk bear yet. We introduced you to the first orphaned cub of the season last april. She was just five pounds and had to be bottle fed. The goal with all the cubs is to release them into the wild. So now, three months later, shes not getting any human contact. We did get a peek at her, through a window. Shes up to more than 20 pounds, but still has not cozied up to the other cubs. Were still working with that and hopefully shell come around. For the rest of the bears its actually a good thing to have so many here at once. Its great. They get to interact with each other, they get to play with each other. They get to fight with each other. They get to determine whos the boss. Most of the cubs are in good shape. But this little one had some serious tooth problems we she arrived. She had to have surgery and is being monitored with a video camera while she recovers. Shes acting normally. Shes eating most of the foods that were putting in there, but were on soft foods right now. Food is one of the biggest concerns for the Wildlife Center right now. As the summer goes on and their appetites get more and more as they get bigger, it will cost us about 100 per bear per week. The cubs get highquality fresh food so they learn to eat a natural diet. They wont be big enough to be released until winter and the food bill will just keep going up. Youre looking at almost 15,000. And it could even higher, if more cubs come in.
