A former First Responder received a sixmonth jail sentence after pleading no contest to charges of sexually harassing teenagers. 33yearold Garrett Piland worked as an officer and firefighter for the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety. He faced accusations of making sexual advances towards two 17yearold Public Safety explorers. In addition to six months in jail, a judge also sentenced him to three years probation. New details on one of the worst tragedies in oaklands history and what happened in the weeks leading up to the deadly ghost ship fire. An oakland fire employee reportedly saw exposed wiring at the warehouse two months before the fire and recommended tenants fix that hazard. That finding detailed in an amended lawsuit. 36 people died in the december fire. Our Media Partners at the Bay Area Area News Group obtained a copy of the suit adding the city of oakland and state of california to a growing list of defendants. It alleges the agencies failed in their duties to shut down the crowded fire trap and its illegal parties. The Fremont Police department reopened a decades old missing persons case. 25yearold sherry mullman disappeared in 1989. From a boyfriends home. The two had a daughter today. She was 5 years old at the time. Investigators say they have decided to reopen the case because of potential new evidence. In addition, theyre reviewing physical evidence originally located in 1989 and are contacting known witnesses to the disappearance. Theyre asking anyone with any information to come forward. Not on the list, grandparents, grandchildren, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, sistersinlaw, brothers in law and fiancees. I think the ban is messed up. This morning, some new details on the deadly shooting in San Francisco at u. P. S. Abc7 news learned before the shooting the gunman set off a metal detector and allowed into the building. A source with knowledge of the investigation says u. P. S. Driver jimmy lam activated the detector and a Security Guard allowed him inside anyway. His backpack had two guns inside. Two weeks ago lam shot and killed three drivers and then himself. U. P. S. Would not comment on the revelation saying its investigation is ongoing. Police in san jose trying to find out what led to an attempted murdersuicide. Police say a man shot a woman and then killed himself. The woman is expected to be okay. Police say the man is the only suspect and there were no other victims. It was another female that was seen running away and we determined that that was a female that because of the shots being fired was just running away from the scene itself. But there are no other victims that were aware of. A Nonprofit Group that deals with gangs tells abc7 news this neighborhood struggles with gang related issues. Police have not said whether this particular shooting was gang related. A petaluma man is arrest for apparently having sex with a teen he met through an app. The man the 23. The alleged victim is 15. Police say he admitted he knew he was having sex with a minor and said he exchanged sexual messages with other my northerlies so thats why police are spreading the word about this. Theyre trying to find these other potential underaged victims. There are new developments in the case of the santa cruz doctor accused of sex crimes against children. Despite prosecutors objections, the judge granted the doctor bail yesterday set at 6. 4 million. If he bails out, he would be under house arrest with gps monitoring and limits on internet access. The terms would include a nocontact order with potential witnesses and alleged victims. We definitely appreciate the courts analysis, but nonetheless, we are concerned that may not be sufficient to protect the public. For the first time yesterday, we saw a nurse in the case accused of being an accomplice. She faces similar charges as the doctor and they would be tried together. Her bail has already been set at 500,000. And she is banned from practicing as a nurse until this case is resolved. Prosecutors are hoping the third defendant in this case Emily Stephens will be extradited here from arizona. The next court date is stet for july 27th. New this morning, one of the popes closest advisers is taking a leave of absence following sex assault charges. Australian Cardinal George pell said overnight he is taking a leave from the post after authorities charged him with multiple counts of sexual assault. He is the highest Ranking Member of the vatican to be charged in the Catholic Churchs longrunning sex scandal. The 78yearold denies the allegations. The cardinal is treasurer for the vatican and a close ally of pope francis. Happening today, a protest planned in front of the new courthouse in dublin hoping to put a hold on incustody arraignments. The east county hall of justice just opened monday. The protest led by a public defender and according to the east bay express that public defender brendan woods says holding arraignments at this new location will make it hard for relatives of defendants to be there. Many of them live further away in oakland, berkeley and albany. Meanwhile, though, the presiding judge claims family members dont usually attend the arraignments and with the county jail nearby it simply makes sense. Some east bay residents who ride the ferry will soon be facing new parking restrictions. Trying to address spillover parking in neighborhoods near harbor bay ferry terminal. Starting august 1st, streets in the neighborhoods are going to be limiting their parking to fourhour parking if you dont have a permit. Also enforcement of twohour parking along adelphian way. Ferry riders are encouraged to bike, walk or carpool to the ferry. A stunt went terribly wrong and a 20yearold woman making a Court Appearance to face charges in the death of her 22yearold boyfriend.
