And in this area, San Francisco south is going to start filling in with more yellow and orange. It will cause almost instant flash flooding and ponding on the roadway. More developing below that, and thats where the storm impact scale is still a 4. The greatest potential, heavy rain and wind gusts and heavy flooding and wind damage still ahead of us through 4 00. You can see the yellows and oranges becoming more widespread across the bay. 9 00 up in the north bay, and then here at 10 00, 11 00, notice red starting to develop, even heavier rain, and then look at all that red developing in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and Santa Clara Valley and more into the east bay valleys at noon and by 1 00 still hanging around those areas. And rain not the only thing making getting around a challenge right now. Trees are beginning to block major highway ramps. And doppler showing us where the worst is right good morning. Once again, here is live doppler 7 lit up in green with slashes of yellow and orange as the most powerful storm we have seen in ten years hits the bay areas. The biggest impact on the roads and highways. Its just pouring. This is a live look right now from the roof cam. We are already seeing flooding expected to get worse throughout the morning. Good morning, everyone. Its a stormy sunday morning, january 8th. I am carolyn tyler. I am dan ashley. Glad to be with carolyn this morning for our storm coverage. Lets start with mike nicco tracking doppler 7. Francis was on the roof and hopefully she is sheltered from all the rain. My goodness. Going on on the Guadalupe River, it begins on the east bank near elks lodge. And then in the belmont avenue neighborhood, it will flood. Ross creek will flood later today and ross creek will continue to creek along the surface streets possibly reaching north of capital expressway, and hillsdale avenue, and the rain is picking up again, light with a few moderate spots there. Up across the north bay we have the Flash Flood Warning until 10 30 for petaluma and penngrove as the creeks are starting to overflow their banks and another one for santa rosa, right down highway 12 to big ben, and then we have sonoma valley, and the sonoma creek specifically, and laguna day santa rosa creeks pushing over and you can see moderate to heavy rain, and thats where most of it is right now and you can see its starting to develop. A lightning bolt over the san mateo bridge, so it is going to get worse. We have been warned. Thanks, mike. There may not be any major issues yet where you live and that could change quickly, and we are on the hunt for the worst of it right now. Melanie woodrow is making her way towards the Santa Cruz Mountains and joins us from los gatos. Reporter the rain is definitely a little heavier here than what we saw a few minutes ago when we joined you live from cupertino. There have been reports of mudslides this morning. Want to show you video from earlier today. This was in rather, you can see a fallen eucalyptus tree blocking the northbound 280 ramp at truesdale drive. Chp arriving quickly and cutting away the branches, and the call first came in at about 2 00 a. M. Your best bet is to stay at home this morning, but if you have to be out, be especially careful. We have been experiencing high winds on the highways this morning. Live in los gatos, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. We have been seeing that in the north bay as well with the rain coming down all morning. We sure did. Reporter Amy Hollyfield is looking for trouble spots. Reporter we are experiencing te worst conditions we have been all morning, and check out the wind. We want to give you an idea of what you will deal with on highway 101. A lot of standing water, and when you see a car come through it, you cant believe all the water kicking up. And we have seen cars coming through here very fast and it seems to be catching people off guard and theres an electronic sign at lucky drive warning people theres standing water and flooding and to slow down, but look at that. Oh, so much windier right now than it has been all morning. The wind, a huge factor right now and its raining harder than it has been. The chp telling me they are definitely experiencing more calls than average this morning, and very busy running from call to call, spinouts and flooding, and the flooding will surprise you. You dont see it because its so dark, and then you hit it and what a surprise it is. Thats why the warning this morning is to slow down, especially here in marin county where theres so much rain, standing water, and now, look at the wind with the rain blowing sideways, and one more car coming before i sign off, and its more in the middle, a smart move is to stay on the far lanes. Its the middle that seems to have accumulated the most. It has been raining all night long, and its okay and now its starting to really accumulate so be careful. Be careful out there. Still, with all of those cars slipping and sliding like that. By the way, pg e not reporting any major problems because of the stormy weather. Crews are working to repair a broken power pole in marin county that came crashing down near nicasio county road last night. And people still without power this morning according to the outage map. Crews hoping to have everybodys responsibility restored by noon today. Storms like these can bring down power lines pretty easily. And Jessica Castro is at the live desk this morning with what pg e recommends of what we should do if we come across downed lines. So the main tip for everybody is to stay away from the power poles. Dont touch them. Thats the basic reminder we give you every time that theres a storm, so once again there it is for you. What do you do if a power pole actually hits your own vehicle . Here are the tips from pg e. Stay inside and do not get out because that area around your car could be energized. You want to honk your horn and get peoples attention to make sure they stay away from your vehicle as well, and call 911 and wait for emergency crews. If a fire starts you need to get out of your car obviously, and then remove any loose clothing and jump out of your car as far as possible and shuffle away from your vehicle instead of picking up your feet. One person on twitter told me on get on the sun goof and jump out. Get as far away from the car, and so something to keep in the back of your head if you get caught in that type of situation and we know that could happen on the roads today. Back to you, carolyn. Thank you, jessica. Officials are warning drivers of flooded roads today, and if you dont have to drive anywhere, dont do it, stay off the roads to protect accidents or cars getting stuck in floodwaters. Heres a live look at San Francisco international airport. Officials are reporting 18 flight cancelations and five delays, and incoming flights are worse, 25 have been cancelled, and 18 delays. With this weather, anything can happen at sfo. Check your flights before you head out to the airport. This 25foot tree fell yesterday killing a woman in san ramon. She was out walking on a golf cart path at at canyon lakes course when this happened. First responders rushed her to the hospital but she died. Firefighters are calling it a freak accident. Nobody else was hurt by the falling tree. This picture tweeted out by the sheriffs office. It started on beach drive and surrounding streets. In santa clara county, dozens residents evacuated from the park, and the only way to get in and out of that park is by bridge, and since it most recently flooded in march residents had no problem complying with the order to leave, and residents along the creek we spoke to said they are confident they are high enough to be safe from flooding. We hope they are right. Several levees in the south part are so old, the 67yearold levees failed a number of times in major storms and plans to rebuild them have stalled. In Sonoma County the concern is flooding penngrove. Mike has been talking about that. The creek has flooded before, and the office of Emergency Services is open as a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect this morning. Lets go to the sierra. Heavy rain and gusty winds are the forecast for today. This is video from the cal transcameras from i80. You can see this weekendss rain melted much of the snow leaving behind wet roads. The plows are out preparing for the next round of heavy snow expected this week. Still ahead on abc 7 morning, a visit for a trip takes a tragic turn for a los gatos mother and her son. One last look north of the airport, more ponding around those areas. Well have an hour by hour look coming up next. Breaking news we continue following for you. Four people are dead and 15 hurt after a truck drove into a crowd of israeli soldiers. It happened in jerusalem just a short time ago. I want to show you the new video we have. And abc news has learned from paramedics on the scene that those four killed were all soldiers, and unfortunately, all very young, in their 20s. Back to you. Why dont you slow down to avoid hydroplaning or causing an accident that could harm yourself or somebody else. If you take photos or video of the weather where you live, only if its safe, you know, post them with the abc7now. You might see them right here on abc 7 news. We have been showing you the rain and the wind hitting us, and you can use a wind gauge. Or the human kind. . Yeah, francis is on the roof. You are in the thick of it. Reporter yeah, i am. The wind has caused the rain to come down sideways. Its not too bad right now, and the temperature is mild, its 58 degrees in San Francisco, but a while ago i did hear thunder and mike showed us a Lightning Strike over the san mateo bridge, and i did run back into my shed at that time, but i want to show you how strong the winds have been and what we are experiencing in the higher elevations. You see the ponding on the roadway and the water flashing as the cars head towards the toll plaza. Winds have been gusting up to 65 at los gatos. And half moon bay, 47. And 39 Miles Per Hour in san jose. Oakland, 36 Miles Per Hour, and hayward, 31mileperhour. Across the bay bridge, theres a high wind advisory. If you have an suv or minivan, be extra careful driving across the bridges, and i am out here, a little bit of a mini lull right now, but we are tracking the storm. The worst is yet to come so get ready for that. As we have been following francis all morning and watching the wave corain come in waves. The storms are moving around 55 Miles Per Hour, and they are going to hit you quickly and thats why you need to be prepared and conditions are going to change rapidly. Its almost so hard to follow the individual cells because there are so many and they are moving rapidly. What they do collectively from now until 4 00 is bring the high egs highest impact. One, light, to two to three, and four. Heres another batch of heavy rain causing ponding in napa. You can see it right here on thompson avenue on the west side, all the way over to kansas avenue on the east side. As we go up it gets heavier across santa rosa, and up towards the airport, we are seeing red. That means theres definitely ponding right there. And we have flooding, penngrove, and petaluma, and now another round of moderate to heavy rain rolling through, and its going to take it a few minutes to get in the creeks and then they start to rise. Behind this, yeah, even more developing. Lets take a look at what is going on up here. We have highway 4, and all of these over towards, say Pleasant Hill getting flooding or standing water, and even into San Francisco, all the way back to daley city, and down towards pacifica. The wall of water is just reloading right now. Took a little break, no doubt about it, the last couple of hours, and reloading and ready to hit with the second punch. Up in the north bay, still going to be the steadiest of the moderate heavy rain, and most of us will have pockets. It starts to move into the heart of the bay, and then 10 00 its on top of us, almost solid yellow and oranges and embedded red, and right over the Santa Cruz Mountains, so around 11 00, the slides, and then you can see the heaviest moves out. We still have scattered light rain with embedded moderate rain from 2 00 to 3 00 all the way up until the evening hours. It just doesnt stop as we have got this moist flow. By tomorrow it will let up a little bit. This is what my biggest concerns are, stream creek flooding, we have had it and more is coming, and debris flows, we are going to have more, and then hydroplaning, slowdown, Power Outages and river flooding, no doubt about it. The winds are going to be fast until 3 00, above 1,500, more trees are going to come down as the 60mileperhour gusts develop, and even the lower elevations will have 25 to 35mileperhour winds. Our next wave of rain tomorrow is a moderate storm and then we will have lighter rain for tuesday and wednesday, and as francis mentioned, its warm outside. You need warm air to carry this much water and all this water is coming from thei tropics where its warmer, and the ground is so saturated we have to keep it an eye on it the next several days. So glad its happening on sunday morning rather than the monday morning commute. It was just me and three or four cars, and i saw one happen and several other accidents. We are showing you which parts of the bay area are getting hammered right now. Coming up, the emergency preparation you should be thinking about, the emergency afoot and lighthearted i take to the open road. Healthy, free, the world before me, the long brown path before me leading wherever i choose. The east and the west are mine. The north and the south are mine. All seems beautiful to me. Honey nut cheerios get their delicious taste from honest ingredients. Like real delicious honey. And real oats. Ok, thats still honey. Ahhh, there we go. Were back to honey again. Whos directing this . That guy figures. Were going to stay on a little later this morning because of this major storm that we are in right now. Yeah, lets go back to mike nicco that is tracking which areas are getting the worst. We had some heavier rain over san jose so you can see the Guadalupe River is going to continue to flood around the expressway through the evening hours. The rain is starting to pick up and its light and theres a moderate blip between sunnyvale and tcupertino. The sonoma creek, and you see all the Flash Flood Warnings. That means its happening and you need to take care right now and chseek shelter if you live near there. Heres a look at the radar. Its letting up just a little bit, but because it lets up it doesnt mean its over because it takes a few minutes for the runoff to fill up the creeks. Its possible later today near st. Helena all the way through monday evening, the napa river and the napa river 8 00 tonight to tomorrow morning, we will have flooding there. With the napa river, especially near napa we are looking at inundation of the lowest agriculture lands, so not as bad around other areas like, say, the russian river. We will have lower mill street and bohemian highway, they are expected to flood starting at 3 00 tomorrow morning through possibly even thursday. Let me give you the Bigger Picture and show you the wet weather, and we had a weather storm, and that storm since moved on and its hitting look at that, the eastern span of the bay bridge, and heading up into the hills, and either way you are going to get a break in the kul decaught. And then a little soaking, johnson road, and skyline boulevard there, and i want to go over here because this is what is going to spread across the rest of us, sharp park and the whole line is going to move from northwest to southeast. So, even in the south bay, inland east bay, its quiet now. It wont be in a couple of hours. Boy, that is really something, mike. Thanks.
