As i widen the perspective, you see the rotation offshore. Its a morning event. In fact, this morning we are looking at temperatures from the upper 20s sub freezing to the upper 40s in San Francisco. This is going to move on through throughout the Morning Hours and by noontime only a slight chance of showers, upper 40s to show 50s. The rest of the day it should be mild with partly cloudy skies by 8 00 as you are headed out, perhaps, and low 40s in the inland valleys and upper 40s the rest of the bay. Getting cooler but not too hard to take. By midnight upper 40s inland and mid40s elsewhere. We are talking about colder lows and afternoon highs for the new year w he will detail it in a few minutes. Lisa. Thank you. We start with developing news in the south day. Authorities are investigating a pair of suspicious fires along highway 101 in san jose. Crews arrived near story road where three to four palm trees were burning. Flames spread to a nearby caltran storage container. Fire workers just put out another fire about halfmile away. Arson investigators believe the fires were set intentionally. In fact, there are multiple locations for starts for these fires. This has been becoming a chronic fire in this same location. Weve had over a couple dozen of these calls over the past few weeks in the same location, same area of the freeway. It took crews about 20 minutes to extinguish the flames the clock is ticking for russians given a dead line to leave our country. And an east coast utility finds direct evidence of a russian attack. It was a hack. Homeland security to determine the utility is working with Homeland Security to determine how invasive the attack was. Burlington Electric Department in vermont said it found the same malware code that was used in the election hack. The laptop was isolated from the grid system so it likely did not spread. This comes at 35 russians working with the u. S. Are approaching their deadline to leave the country as part of newlyimposed sanctions. Senators say they are pursuing even tougher actions. The ride takes them up in the air for a scenic view. Around 2 00 yesterday afternoon the ride got stuck 130 feet into their 180foot decent. Firefighters used ropes to lower people down one by one because their ladders on the fire trucks werent long enough. No one was hurt. The ride will be closed as the park investigates what went wrong. In berkeley there are new details on what gave three workers Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Sky 7 shows us the scene late yesterday afternoon at a City Sports Club under construction. We are told the workers got sick from using a gaspowered washer inside that building. No one else was exposed. Extra inspectors were out in the field last night trying to sniff out the source of a foul odor. The bay area air Quality Management district and Contra Costa Health officials received more than 100 complaints about the stench of rotten eggs. The two agencies are working together to investigate all possible sources, including the richmond chevron refinery. Officials are encouraging everyone to make a plan right now in order to get home safely tonight after celebrating the new year. All 15 casa comaderas restaurants in the bay area are now closed leaving many without jobs. Abc7 reporter Cornell Bernard has more. It was a sudden closer no one saw coming. Hes a former kitchen employee in san bruno. He got a text december 26th saying dont come to work. The restaurant chain was closing its doors for good. We waited for the money. Gusto just got his last paycheck. But some of his former coworkers say they have not been paid and many still have personal attempts inside that they cant retrieve. I have my stuff inside. I dont know whats going to happen right now. The restaurant chains finances are in question. This notice on the door of the san bruno cafe demands 19,000 in back rent for december. We found a similar notice on the door of this san jose restaurant. 18,000 in rent was never paid. The Property Management company told us offcamera they were shocked to see it vanish overnight. Wendys posted this note on the door asking laid off employees to apply with them. The chain is hiring across the bay area, especially in the south bay, where this new restaurant needs workers. We are offering 13 an hour for crewmembers starting and 15 an hour starting for management and up, depending on hair their experience. Other companies are stepping up. A puppy is home safe, and two suspects are in custody after a violent attack and robbery. San jose police say Raymond Gonzalez and andrew cabinaw seen here responded to a craigs list ad a week ago at the victims home. The man was sell this puppy, named else saw, born this fall. Police say the robbers beat and tased the man, ransacked the home and took off. Police tracked the dog down and returned him to the family. The victim had serious injuries but should survive Governor Brown had a tweeted a message about his dog passing yesterday. The dog underwent emergency surgery in october but doctors were unable to fully remove the cancer. Sutter was 13 years old. Carrie fisher was one of the first female role models i identified with. She was the princess who didnt need to be saved. This was one of many Public Memorials for actress Carrie Fisher. Several fans came by to pay tribute. They have been leaving messages, candles and even photographs. In new orleans, a parade of star wars characters as a salute to fisher. She died tuesday following a heart attack on a flight back from london last week. Her mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, died a day later. Speaking with 20 20s elizabeth vargas, todd fisher said the two were inseparable. She then said she really wanted to be with carrie with those precise words, and within 15 minutes from that conversation she faded out. Thanks, lisa. Developing news in connecticut. Police are investigating after two men were shot and killed outside a concert venue where Rapper Meek Mill performed last night. Two others were injured. The concert appeared to be winding down when it happened. So far no arrests have been made. In Pennsylvania Police are searching for a suspect who shot and killed a state trooper there. Trooper landon weaver was shot last night after a report of a protection from abuse violation in a Rural Community near altuna. The remote area being searched has knows been closed off. Police are looking for 32yearold jason robison. He is considered armed and dangerous. Its a dirty job, but someones got to do it. They probably call themselves the pooper scoopers, and they follow the horses at the annual tournament of roses parade. And get this, volunteers embrace the job. The reporter from our sister station in los angeles explains why. Reporter as dozens of floats, marching bands and equestrian units go down the rose parade route, eight dozen volunteers are doing some dirty behindthescenes work. They could dash out right now. They proudly call themselves the pooper scoopers. Well, because, thats what they do. And duty, pun intended, calls early. We try to arrive sometime between 5 00 p. M. And 6 00 a. M. Peggy oleary started volunteering in 1990. People were looking at me as if i was crazy, and i didnt understand that. I thought this was really going to be a fun experience. And oleary said shes been having fun every year since then. She even recruited her friend, barbara marshall, about four years ago. We all look forward to it, and we all have a great time being together. The volunteers are here in what is known as the tv corner. They clear any horse debris before the floats make their way on to colorado boulevard. So that none of it gets dragged along and ends up on your tv screen. Put it in a bag. A big, plastic bag. We tie it up and throw it under there. All we are doing is making sure that the world does not see that horses poop in pasadena. Thats all. Thats the extent of it. Make no mistake, its the responsibility the volunteers take seriously. But it seems the friendships and experiences lived along the way are what keeps them coming back. We have just all found that it is the best way to start the new year. We all greet each other all year long as we do on parade morning, by making eye contact, hugging, wishing people happy new year. His eagle Scout Project was ambitious and requird some fancy footwork. Eric thomas has the story. 17yearold has some pretty big shoes to fill and some baby fills to fill and all sizes in between. You see, he spent the last three weeks collecting shoes for the needy. I just wanted to do a project that would help a lot of people. And helping a lot of people is one way he hopes to make eagle scout. When he started three weeks ago, he had the ambitious goal of collecting 400 pairs of shoes. When he said 400, i thought that was probably achievable within that time frame that he set. But things started a little slow. So they passed out hundreds of these flyers at school and in their neighborhood and donation really hit their stride. All the shoes added up to 1420 pair of shoes. They go to the organization soles for souls. This is their website. They had out shoes in more than 100 countries around the world. He said pictures of what some people are forced to wear on their feet helped drive his effort. On the website i learned about how these people cant get the education, and thats because they dont have shoes and thats a huge factor. And his scout troop couldnt be prouder. Hes worked his butt off. Hes worked up into leadership positions and the past the patrol leader meaning he runs the whole troop. Those leadership skills will help him stand on his own two feet when he goes off to purdue next fall to study engineering. In Mountain View, eric thomas, abc7 news.
