S. , but what youre serving to your family may not be as good as you think. 7 on your side has partnered with Consumer Reports for this exclusive coverage of shrimp safety. Heres michael finney. Reporter hey, good morning, everyone. Consumer reports tests of frozen shrimp found some with potentially harmful back tear kbra and illegal antibiotic residues. The shrimp was purchased in 27 cities across the country. Shrimp americans eat an average of almost four pounds a year making shrimp more popular than tuna. Today about 94 of the u. S. Shrimp supply is imported and the majority of it is farmed. Farming can be done responsibly but when its not bacteria and discan thrive antibiotics may seem like a fix but we dont think so and they are illegal for use in imported shrimp. Reporter Consumer Reports tested to find out how safe our shrimp is. Scientists analyzed 342 packages of frozen shrimp both farmed and wild, raw and cooked. Over all 60 of the raw shrimp samples tested positive for bacteria. So, safe preparation is very important. And 11 samples, or about 5 of imported raw farmed shrimp had antibiotic residues. The antibiotic use is particularly troubling because its illegal. It promotes antibiotic resistance. And it just isnt a responsible way of farming. Reporter Consumer Reports recommends for responsibly sourced wild shrimp like those recommended by seafood watch or certified by the marine stewardship council. If farmed shrimp is better for your budget look for farmed shrimp certified by nature land Aquatic Stewardship Council Whole Foods Market responsibly farmed. Knowing what to look for will help you make choices that are better for you and the environment. The food and Drug Administration is responsible for inspecting shrimp coming into the United States to make sure it doesnt contain any drugs or chemicals that arent per mid.
