Californias drought emergency has some Central Valley residents upset that water is being diverted from crops to fish. The u. S. Bureau of reclamation has released large amounts of water from a lake downstream into the Stanislaus River to reach young salmon reach the pacific. Farmers are unhappy saying its needed for crops. Others say if water can be used for yards, it should be used for fish. I think fish have a higher priority than people watering their lawns. The water thats there, we know its going to be gone by then of the summer. And theres certainly not going to be anything to replenish it between now and then. If we have another year drought, what happens to all of us including the fish . The u. S. Bureau of reclamation is considering another large release of water to help the fish. Drought wasnt on anyones mind back in 2003, but a decision to build a small Desalination Plant in the east bay is turning out to be a huge help as water districts scramble to find new water sources. David louie shows how the plant came to be and how its helping now. This Desalination Plant is proving to be a major benefit during the drought but the drought wasnt the reason it was built. It helps offset some of the supplies during the drought and it is actually a cost savings for us as well. We are saving about 4 million a year and we dont have to purchase more expensive water supplies. It was built 12 years ago because of salt water into the ground water base since that supply the cities of Fremont Newark and the area. The water percolates into the ground, but salt water from San Francisco bay has mixed in. Without desalination, the water was undrinkable. There were historic pumping issues in the area that drew the groundwater basin down and drew water from the bay in toward our groundwater basin. And we have an active Recharge Program to continue pushing that water out toward the bay and the water in this area still tends to be a little brackish. The Desalination Plant puts the brackish water through reverse osmosis using a membrane to filter out salt water and minerals. The water that comes out and blended with well water for taste and distributed right through the pipes to residences and businesses in fremont, newark and union city. Kind of tastes just like regular tap water. The 10 million gallons of water produced each day gives the district flexibility in their water supply. 40 comes from local sources and 60 is imported. In newark, david louie, abc7 news. Californias drought will be front and center on issues discussed this morning on this week. Governor jerry brown will be interviewed by martha raditz.
