Its been one week since a 16yearold gorilla died at the San Francisco zoo, crushed under an electronic door. But as the abc7 iteam reports, due administrators have heard warnings about that very same door for years. Dan noyes investigated operations at the zoo before. He has a story you will see only on abc7 news. This week the zoo released a note from the zookeeper about the death of the gorilla. Her grandmother was carrying her into room 4 for the night and keeper writes, i began to close electric door 4 and when i looked at the dorr again, it was closed and she was caught in the door closer chest. But documents obtained by the zoo show a long history with the operation of that same door. A log entry that january 27, 2010 notes, a gorilla that was about the same age when she died, got hand caught in electric door 4. Not using it but of at first but within five minutes only mildly favoring it. The next day a zookeeper said avoid chipping her into electric doors that are hard to see gorillas through. S the door that killed her is the farthest away from the control panel. In may, 2010, a different door trapped her again. The zookeeper wrote, i didnt catch the door in time. He screamed. Looked like there was a gash in left middle knuckle. Knuckle swollen. He illustrated where it happened on his hand. Theres a lot of issues in that building. Theres visibility issues, theres lighting issues. The configuration of the rooms is not ideal. Officials are bringing in a zoo expert from florida. He said one obvious solution would be to have a second set of eyes when transferring the gorillas past those doors. If there are two of you operating the system and one person doesnt see something, the other can say, hey, look at this. Theres something going on, there you need to stop. But almost a year to the day before she died, a zookeeper emailed management asking for a second employee, a gate keep are to be available for all shifting. Shifting is when the zookeepers move the gorillas through the door. If they had taken action after the email more than one year ago, theres a chance she could be alive today. A source said shes devastated by with a happened and hasnt worked since then. She feels the zoo is trying to blame her as a way to deflect attention.
