A Lake Tahoe Wildlife Center is packed with orphan bear cubs right now, the most they have ever had this early in the summer. The cubs are getting great care but no one knows why there are so many. Heres news anchor cheryl jennings. There are nine orphan bear cubs at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Center. This is the only place in calafornia licensed to care for wild cubs, and they keep coming. Its been nonstop the last month. This is the newest arrival. Hes named brockway. Hes about to get a sedative so he can get a medical exam. Brockway was found near her mothers body near lake tahoe. He was left with a note. The state, fish and Wildlife Department gave the okay to transport him to the Wildlife Center. A little thin, a little lethargic. Brockway is getting fluids now, and his prognosis is good. The Wildlife Center is run by tom and cheryl millham, who have been caring for bear cubs the last 14 years. The bears here now are all five to six months old from all over the state. This summer more bears than usual are showing up in Populated Areas because of drought, but theres no way to know if thats why so many orphan bears have been found. We just havent learned to talk bear yet. We introduce you to the first orphan from last april. She was just five pounds and had to be bottlefed. The goal with all the cubs is to release them into the wild. So now, three months later, shes not getting any human contact. We did get a peak at her through a window. Shes up to more than 20 pounds, but still has not cozies up to the other cubs. We are still working with that and hopefully she will come around. For the rest of the bears its a good thing to have so many here at once. Oh, its great because they get to interact with each other, they get to play with each other, they get to fight with each other, they get to determine who is the boss. Most of the cubs are in good shape. But this little one had some serious tooth problems when she arrived. She had to have surgery and is being monitored with a video camera while she recovers. Shes acting normally. Shes eating most of the foods we are putting in there, but we are on soft foods right now. Food is one of the biggest concerns for the Wildlife Center right now. As the summer goes on and their appetites get more and more as they get bigger, it will cost us about 100 per bear per week. The cubs get high Quality Fresh food so they learn to eat a natural diet. They wont be big enough to be released until winter and the food bill will just keep going up. You are looking at almost 15,000. And it could go even higher if more cubs come in. Cheryl jennings, abc7 news. The Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care Center relies entirely on private donations. The wildlife rehabbers are thrilled to have received more than 11,000 in donations so far this week. They can still use more. We have a link on our website. Reporter super storm sandy took down fences, doors, even entire houses and it also took down Something Else. A fourth of all cell towers were down. Im sitting there thinking its ridiculous that during the time when you need to communicate most you are unable to. Yes, even if you could find a place to charge your phone, it might be useless. Thats when danielle got an idea for an app that would let phones talk to each other without a network, but there was a problem. Cell phones just doesnt have the right hardware, but theres Something Else that does. First responders use powerful twoway radios with antennas. Everybody in the military and Disaster Relief organizations still use them. He took that and stuck it into this called gotenna. It is about 5 inches long and ways a couple ounces. Theres no speaker or giant pack. Its not for talking. Its for texting. The entire idea is this is supposed to work exactly the way you use your phone normally. Gotenna acts as a relay. You type a message on your phone, send it here via bluetooth and it automatically sends it to somebody up to a few miles away, even farther depending on where you are. Definite use for a lot of people who do outdoor activities. Nick thinks skiers and hikers could snap it up on preorder. 150 for two of them. It sold in pairs because one wont do you any good. You can only communicate with another person who has a gotenna. The signal could travel up to 50 miles. Could also use at Music Festivals where cell towers get overloaded. And its truly off the grid. The messages are not stored anywhere. You can definitely speak to another person completely privately. She said shes had interest from Disaster Relief groups who have no service at all. And some inland areas with high clouds moving in and the humidity rises again tomorrow. So heres why. This water vapor imagery shows moisture in the upper levels of the atmosphere and the circulation around the high and the clockwise direction and counter clockwise around the low, this is helping to pull the moisture up from the gulf of california so the moisture tap is back on and we are going to see increasing high clouds this afternoon. They will be coming from the south. Also, the high clouds could bring a chance of some thunderstorms in the sierra and some of the higher elevations. But for us we will just see the clouds overnight, as well, into sunday morning with very muggy conditions and possibly more drizzle, especially along the coast for the a. I. D. S. Walk.
