Abc7 News ReporterJonathan Bloom explains the new little gadget that could save you money. Our goal is to make every car a connected smart car. It starts with this Little Black Box. You plug it into the diagnostic port and connect with an app on your phone. It reads information on a secondbysecond basis. Listing off every trip you take. It can tell you down to the penny how much each trip costs you in gas. It watches your commute and gives you insight. If you forgot where you parked or your car is towed, the device has a gps unit in it and a cellular modem so it can show you the position of the car at any point in time. The device is called a metronome. How much does it cost . It is free. They can make it free because they are paying for it by selling something else, car insurance. That is priced not we the month or year, but by the mile. By charging people on a permile basis, if you, for example, are taking bart or cal train to get to work during the week, only using your car on the weekends, we can save people 40, 50 . It can add up to as much as 400 or 500 a year. Its taylor made for people in cities who drive less miles per year. The metronome tracks how much you drive, not how you drive, setting it apart from devices like snapshot from progressive. Just plug it in and it keeps track of your good driving habits, like how hard you brake, how fast you go on the road. That sort of tracking is illegal in california and so is snapshot. But pricing by mileage is legal, although it still needs state approval before it can start selling insurance here. In the meantime its giving away the devices. The device will continue to be for free. If we can save people money with the insurance, thats great. Metro mile is selling insurance in washington. And oregon abc7 news.
