Tonight the medical examiner has identified the woman shot and killed by San Francisco police after she was driving recklessly on a busy street. Two plain clothes officers were investigating reports of a stolen jet that at the the chevron station at van ness and pine street. They found the car identified themselves to the driver, 24yearold alice brown. Brown drove straight toward them. When she tried to get away, she hit a building went the wrong way down pine street. Drove on a sidewalk, hit another building and several cars. One motorcycle officer dumped his bicycle to avoid being hit. Police say they shot brown because she was endangering officers and pedestrians last night on the street. A 45yearold woman and her 5yearold daughter are in the hospital after an elderly driver hit them in a crosswalk. That was just afternoon when it happened. The 86yearold woman was driving the white suv you see there. He has life threatening injuries. The elderly driver went to the hospital with unknown injuries. Officers say at this point she has not been charged with a crime. Concord boulevard is still closed in both directions between trail creek after a deadly crash. Two cars crashed before noon. Police are not saying yet who was at fault. They do say one person involved died. We have new information about how the Highway Patrol was safely end the high speed chase that went through four bay area counties. It ended in a spectacular crash. That one yesterday. Yet amazingly the driver wasnt seriously injured and no other drivers in the 100mile pursuit were hurt. David louie is live at chp headquarters tonight. Even after the spectacular crash. This guy was not ready to quit running. That is very true dan, and thats the new information weve got. The chp says he was under the influence to the degree that he was surprised when he got out of his vehicle, how badly it was damaged after the crash. The driver was still trying to get away. Even as officers approached with guns and tasers drawn. It appears ramon wasnt about to let the crash stop his efforts to elude the chp officers chasing him. Once it overturned, you dont see him getting out. M instead look at that smoke coming from the right rear. He was gunning the engine. Its something chp officer daniel hill spotted as he reviewed the sky 7 hd video of the pursuit and crash at Division Headquarters in vallejo. You can see the right rear tire was spinning. Until the point he exits the vehicle, he had his foot on the accelerator trying to continue to drive away. Reporter hill has been in 70 pursuits himself. Theyre usually over in under ten minutes. This one lasted an hour and a half, even after officers deployed a spike strip like this one. It seems hes surprised the vehicle is damaged. He seems to notice and walk towards them not in the way a normal person would comply. Hes still in the hospital where the chp says hes on a 72hour hold for evaluation. Chp officer hill showed us the spike strip that was deployed. The strip is studded with hollowed speaks. Theyre studded for officer safety. They let the air escape. Designed to cause the driver to stop within a minute or two. However he kept going. The tires disintegrated. The rims did the same leaving only rotors. Chp decided calling off the the pursuit was not a go ahead idea. The risk of the public being injured by the pursuit was being outweighed by the benefit of stopping the driver from putting other people at risk. He faces felon charges for failing to stop and being under the influence. In virginiaallejo for abc 7 news. A 70yearold woman is facing charges of burglarizing a church twice on the peninsula. Police say when they arrested her sunday Ethel Jean Hayes had keys to a church and a number of pal palo alto businesses. She is facing charges in connection with two burglars at Trinity Lutheran church in palo alto, and for possessing stolen property. Governor jerry brown and uc president Janet Napolitano talked publicly about their private budget negotiations. They failed to answer one key question. Will tuition go up at the university of california at todays meeting, napolitano said she has met tw the governor twice to discuss a proposed 28 tuition increase over five years. Brown talked about suspending cuts. Napolitano told them to expect changes on the budget. I would love to get back to the days when 90 came from the state and only 10 from the students, but we dont live in that kind of world. The meeting was briefly interrupted by demonstrators. Lack of snow is forcing another sierra ski resort to shut down earlier than normal. They will close for the season this sunday. Due to the the ultra dry conditions this winter.
