School officers are dragging and punching a student. It happened last year and now the Oakland Unified Police chief is calling for a review of what happened. Laura anthony has the story. Reporter well hi dan. Just got off the phone for the attorney of the family with the boy, theyre considering a civil lawsuit against the district. The police chief also upset by what he sees on this video. He described it for us in detail. Saying that these are actions among his civilian officers that he says are totally unacceptable. In this case, i dont see him doing anything but standing at the threshold of the door. Reporter it happened on january 22, 2014. A 15yearold freshman had been called to the office at fremont high for a meeting with an administrator. As shown on the video, the student stands there for a few moments before hes approached by two Security Officers who apparently want him to move. So you see a Security Officer right here, the jacket he comes up to talk to him. The reports state that hes asking him to leave the threshold of the door. Reporter the events as described by the new police chief hell push him into the officer. The officer will turn around put his arm around his neck put him in this hold. Reporter the student appears to struggle with the officers but no punches are thrown until the threesome gets to the hallway. The student will throw a punch at the Security Officer and then the Security Officer kind you can see the movement of him punching back. Reporter he is quite troubled, not only by the officers use of force but by the fact that the video sat in a file for 14 months. Last may this video surfaced showing another school Security Officer, mitchell, punching a student in a wheelchair at oakland high. An attorney represents mitchell who goes on trial next month for felony assault. Without the appropriate resources, a school Security Officer is forced to deal with a very difficult situation alone. Or with very limited help. Reporter godan will call for more training and hes placed the two Security Officers on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation. You dont put your hands on the kid unless you have justification to do it. Based on what i have seen, unless Something Else comes up, i dont see justification for putting his hands on him. Reporter the student no longer attends fremont high. San jose police need your help in a shooting investigation that sent a bullet into a Highway Patrol cruiser. This story was breaking on abc 7 morning news. Investigators shut down highway 101 while searching for evidence between tully and story roads. Someone fired in the direction of two chp officers during a traffic stop. About 11 30 last night. One bullet hit their cruiser. The officers were not hurt. Investigators are still trying to determine if the shots came from a moving car or maybe the surrounding neighborhood. If something comes to light where we determine that this was a targeted attack then again well take the appropriate measures. But nothing right now that would lead us to believe that. Police are asking anyone who was in that area to please contact them immediately. A hit and run involving a pedestrian in hayward has become a homicide investigation. Police say the 50yearold man hit on his way to work yesterday has died. The man was walking in the parking garage in the Industrial Complex on west wynton avenue. Investigators are looking for a vehicle with front bumper and hood damage along with a bashed in windshield and side windows. A former youth counselor faces life in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing four young girls. A jury found waking bailey of san jose guilty of multiple sex Crimes Involving rape. His victims were all girls. Three under the age of 14. The fourth and 18yearold girl with the mental capability of a 5yearold. Bailey worked as a counselor for troubled an disabled youth from 2007 to 2011. Now, these crimes happened at two assisted living facilities east field, and achieve kids in san jose. A high profile sex discrimination trial continues against the Venture Capital firm. Kleiner perkins is being sued and Tiffany Wilson has todays testimony in the San Francisco superior court. Reporter well, ellen powell is suing her former employee for 16 million. Because its one thats going to trial where youre getting a rare glimpse into the often cloistered world of Venture Capitalists. Powell filed a come plapts in 2012 saying she was sexually discriminated against, passed over for promotions but there was a sexually charged atmosphere and she felt re retaliated against after having an affair with a married colleague. We heard from an independent investigator who was hired to look into these complaints and he discussed his conversations with powell where she says she was on a private jet where the men talked about porn stars and prostitutes. She alleged there were all male dinners and women were asked to take notes specifically at off site events. Today during crossexamination that independent investigator says that he spoke with other women who worked at the firm who disagree with powells characterization and who said that it was a very gender equal place to work. And at this point, he is expected to return to the stand on monday to continue his testimony. And no matter what happens at this point, gender rights advocates say this trial is doing a lot of good. I think many of the things that we hope to come out of this has already come out. I think theres been a spotlight on issues in tech and finance that are often whispered behind hand, said quietly in hot lines to us but not out in the open. Its important to understand theres real barriers that women face when theyre trying to exceed in these really tough fields. Nearly all students at a San Bruno Elementary School skipped school to show support for theyre teachers. The sickout was held at belle air elementary school. Only 75 of the 340 students showed up for class today. The School District is facing a more than 2 million deficit and is looking to cut teachers and put more children in the classroom. Parents and students confronted superintendent david hutt and this is what he had to say to them. Today is a school day. It is a very important day for the children to be able to attend school today. The adults are having to work through some very significant issues. But those are issues that for us as adults we need to work through to support children. Teachers are currently working under a contract that expired last june. The port of oakland is still dealing with a cargo backup tonight, following a month long labor dispute. The new labor contract was agreed on but the backup may not be cleared for two months. All sides are working together and customers should see the benefits of faster, smoother cargo flow soon. Reporter it was a lunch time accident that sent 7yearold sophia to the hospital at stanford for nearly a week. I tripped on my shoelace. And i fell on the curb. And i hit my side on it. Reporter she went to the School Nurses office because of the pain and she had thrown up. Her parents took her home and the vomiting continued and so did the trips. First to the ur jentdzgent care center and then she was taken to stanford. When we saw the ct scan we were floored. We didnt think it was possible to break a piece of your kidney off. Reporter but it happened to see fee ya and something needed to be done to save her kidney. The endoscopic surgery was performed. We put a plastic stint in and the purpose is to let the urine go out into the bladder rather than sitting around the kidneys. Reporter how do you explain this to a 7yearold girl . We drew her a picture of a happy kidney on one side with a little smiley face and a sad kidney on the other. We told her this is the kidney that got hurt, but hes going to get better in a couple of weeks. His sad face will turn happy. Reporter sophia will be out of school for the next two weeks but doctors have given her some homework. Im supposed to walk, walk three times a day. And its very tricky because theres lots of pressure. Reporter although she is tired an assignment she said shes happy to do. She was originally scheduled to go home today but doctors tell us that has been pushed to tomorrow. They want to monitor her fever which is something that is common with kidney injury. Sky 7 hd over the intense search for the inmate who escaped after being treated at the medical clinic. That inmate is carter. He fought and injured one deputy, and he got away. Then a second deputy was injured during the chase. Both are expected to be okay. Search dogs have been brought in to help the authorities. The streets near fulton way and near Valley Medical Center are shut down. The inmate, carter is an accused molester. He has a tattoo on the left side of the neck that says alice. The second phase of a rare sixway kidney transplant is over tonight. Part of a twoday operation involving 12 people. Six donors, six recipients in all. Abc 7s janet oh has an update on the patients condition. Reporter its very incredible. The transplants went very well for the six recipients involve and the operation started at 7 30 this morning. It wrapped up a couple of hours ago. The staff said this was the largest operation of its kind on the west coast. Surgeons were busy all day yesterday and today but theyre happy to say there were no complications. And everyone is doing fine. Broussard kicked it off she was inspired after losing loved ones. Doctors are hoping more people will become altruistic donors. I think the longest wait on the waiting list is 2 1 2 years and given that particular person would have likely waited another five to ten years had Something Like this not become available. The need is there. People need kidney transplants, over 100,000 people on the waiting list. And a number of those have living donors that are incompatible with them. Reporter doctors say there is a very low risk for donors and that medical advancements have made it easier for recovery as well. The raiders will pay a fee of 400,000 to use that coliseum for next season. The team will pay an additional fee to use the Training Facility in alameda. The deal lets officials turn their attention to building a new stadium. It now opens the door for the city, the Real Estate Developers and the team to continue and hopefully complete in the near term a long term deal for the raiders to stay in oakland.
