Reporter a large group of peaceful demonstrators marched more than two miles from Fruitvale Bart to the coliseum station. Except for those facilitating the march, police kept a low profile, with officers standing a few blocks away from the march. In oakland, laura anthony, abc7 news. Lets go live to the breaking news we brought you at the top of the broadcast where protestors have shut down a good portion of the san mateo bridge. As you can see traffic is really backed up. Both directions were shut down for a time but now one direction eastbound is moving again. Drivers are not being allowed to get on westbound at this point. You can see all those protestors there blocking that traffic. Police started making arrests just before the top of the hour just before 5 00. Protestors are saying theyre going to keep it shut down for 28 minutes. They say its symbolic of black lives being lost every 28 hours. Well continue to follow that breaking news. As we move on, from selma to montgomery, alabama, the historic march led by dr. Martin luther king 50 years ago was instrumental in passing the 1965 Voting Rights act. Today hundreds of people marched to commemorate that important day. Some are not celebrating but demanding social justice for young africanamerican men today. Were in the newsroom with the story. I think with everything thats going on in our nation, many people felt that it was really important to march today and revisit how we got here 50 years after Congress Passed and the president signed the Voting Rights act. Its sweet to celebrate but its sorryow when you think about the Economic Situation and the discrimination. Its sweet and bitter. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi reminded everyone that we are also celebrating what will soon be the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights act. Reverend king insisted that we vote. If you dont vote you dont count. You absolutely must vote. Reporter todays celebration also sparked outrage over the Police Shootings of unarmed black men. We are losing too many africanamerican boys not just to Police Officers but to black boys and men. And we have got to hold them accountable. Reporter it was a reminder that dr. Martin luther king jr. , the freedom train today finished off its last ride from san jose to San Francisco. Officials say after 32 years declining ticket sales and difficulty obtaining sponsorship led to the cancellation of the annual tradition. But for many who rode the train its events like these that help keep dr. Kings legacy alive. The struggle is not over. Things like this keep it on peoples minds and its a shame that its going away. This was the last freedom train operating in the u. S. Apple and some of its employees are at odds over the tech giants policy regarding the king holiday. Nearly 200 employees signed a petition asking that the company give them a paid day off. Apple donates for employees who choose to do volunteer service. Workers say a paid holiday would show a diverse staff. No comment from apple. 50 protestors played audio from dr. Kings speeches while they stood silently with fists in the air outside her home. The group targeted the mayor because she spent here first day on the job meeting with oakland police. There could be a major shift in oaklands longdiscussed coliseum city project. Mayor shaft and other leaders announced their support today for another 90day exclusive negotiating agreement with the developer. Shaft says the county board of supervisors appears ready to back the citys efforts. Weve got to be together in our approach to actually make a successful project happen. The extension would come with a condition that allows the raiders and as to offer competing plans. Some see the move as a way to get the teams more involved in the process and perhaps compete against each other. Both teams have expressed interest in remaining in oakland if new stadiums for each can be built. While were talking about those facilities oracle arena tonight is dealing with water damage. Take a look during the warriors game flooding was reported in several areas of the first floor including a storage area several bathrooms and the kitchen. Oracle has not returned our calls for comment. The nearby coliseum has had flooding issues. This past summer raw sewage backed up into the facilities twice. Earlier in the day at king tide here in San Francisco it was just about to 8 feet where the ruler runs out and in some parts of the bay area, king tides were more than nine feet. At the parkway off highway 101 we saw a big bus drive inside the entrance to the lot. One driver decided her little red mini probably wouldnt make it. I actually got in by going over the curb. From sky 7 you get a different view of the mess. One lane of the highway underpass was shut down. This is one of those spots that usually gets flooded out. But its unusual today. Usually at high tide is at nighttime when we get the full moon. This is the first time ive worked in the morning and, yeah this is crazy. Reporter this is petes usual place to pick up riders. He nearly left because of rising water levels. Earlier it was even higher than this. It was getting right here and i was sitting right here and figuring if it gets higher i got to get out of here. Reporter in oakland more than 100 people turned out for a day of service for Martin Luther king and theyre trying to teach the community about restoration. It was great to have that connection of wet lands and Sea Level Rise right there for people to see. Reporter she says king tides help show what the bay area will be experiencing by 2050 because of Climate Change and depleted we had lands. When you see these high waters today which is an anom lee compared to the rest of the year, that will be the average daily high tide. Reporter as sea levels rise infrastructure may have to be reengineered. They say restoring we had lands can help because they act as buffer zones that soak up the rising waters. Earlier this afternoon approximately 4 50 we had a group of protestors between 30 and 50 pop up on the highrise of the san mateo bridge. Officers moved into place and stopped traffic in the area to protect the protestors and gave them a dispersal order to get off the bridge. So far everything has been peaceful. Protestors are complying with officers orders to move out of the roadway one by one. Theres no aggression shown by either us or the people. Were trying to get them off the freeway as soon as possible. Are they confined to the west side of the bridge at this point . We can see some traffic starting to get by. Tell us where it might be shut down for folks about to get on the roadway. Right now the only side thats shut down is the westbound side. The eastbound side is flowing freely. Do you expect, very quickly officer hill to arrest these protestors or move them along . It depends on their response. We ask them to leave the freeway. Getting back to our other news today, in San Francisco police are looking into whether three fires set in the citys castro neighborhood this morningiia are connected. The first fire happened just before 4 00 at 19th and castro streets. A truck there was burned and suffered significant damage. About a halfhour later, arson investigators were called to two fires on hartford street that were set across from one another. One of those fires caused damage to a house. Investigators believe a house fire in san jose yesterday was sparked by an electrical outlet. The house suffered major damage. Fortunately the family of five who live there was not home when it happened. Firefighters used a heatsensing camera to find their little dog who was hiding under a bed. Hes okay, obviously just scared. A new effort to honor firefighters, Police Officers and military veterans may be precedent setting. El grove wants to require that Housing Developers name at least one street in memory of First Responders. The areas largest Home Builders association said they had never heard of such a role.
