Tonight, one man is dead, shot and killed by a police officer. The shooting happened on willow road in menlo park. Thats where abc 7 News Reporter vic lee joins us live right now. Reporter this is willow road. The shooting happened right over there towards the end of the street. The tarpcovered body was there until just a little while ago. Police not releasing much information, but let me tell you what theyre saying as we go to sky 7 hd. At about 12 30, Police Responded to a call of a suspicious person. When they arrived, they found a burglary in progress and here is some of the Police Dispatch audio. Take a listen. We have one down. Were going to need medics and the other units to close off willow road. Got a loaded firearm. He fired at us. Weve got him down. Reporter police later told us that the suspect ran when the officers came on the scene. Officers chased him. A taser was fired but police say the suspect pulled out a gun. Thats when officers shot him. This is an upscale neighborhood, as you can imagine crimes dont happen here that much in menlo park. In fact, police tell us there hasnt been a shooting in a long, long time. The last one that i can go back to is december 22nd, 2006. Reporter one officer was sent to the hospital. He apparently injured his knee during the foot chase. Police have yet to identify the suspect pending notification of next of kin. As i said before, investigators still on the scene here on willow road. They will be here for quite some time. We are told the street is blocked off but neighbors are coming and going so there was no evacuation here. We are told now that that burglary was not in a home but in a store of some kind. Kaiser permanente patients found thousands of nurses walking picket lines because of a twoday strike against the health care giant. [ chanting ] those chants are from striking nurses in redwood city. The California Nurses Association is trying to broker a new contract with kaiser. It has been part of their Business Model to reduce, reduce, reduce. What that means for the patient is less care. Less nurses equal less care. That is the bottom line. Kaiser is committed to bargaining with the California Nurses Association, has been at the table with cna since august. We have been bargaining in good faith. Kaiser has hired replacement nurses to replace the strikers. The strike coincides with a call for greater ebola protection for nurses during a national day of action tomorrow. Grief counselors arrive to help students cope with a series of shootings off campus. In the past week, six teenagers were wounded and sadly, 16yearold Rodney Frazier died. Most of the victims attend richmond high school. Reporter well, richmond has really tried to reduce gun violence in the community and police have been successful at it, but these recent shootings tell them more work has to be done. In the meantime, police are concerned that some may decide to retaliate. Tuesday night, richmonds Iron Triangle was the scene of a shooting where three teenagers were injured. All hispanic. Ten blocks from here, a fourth teenager was also shot. On friday night, 16 year old Rodney Frazier was shot and killed in front of this house. 30 minutes later, 29yearold Charles Jackson was killed in a driveby shooting. It didnt end there. A 21yearold and a 15yearold were also shot the following day. The shootings involving the hispanic juveniles on tuesday night and then some of the other shootings later this week, we feel is involving Gang Violence. Reporter police say some of the others were victims of a feud between africanamerican rival gangs concentrated in North Richmond and deep sea in central richmond. Four of the teens shot attend richmond high. Thats sad when a 16yearold cant go outside and just play. Reporter a teacher recently moved to richmond from salinas where Gang Violence is not uncommon. The administration here is doing a lot of good things, based on the emails about getting teachers to grief counseling for the students. Reporter school was out today and yesterday but students at soccer practice were told about counseling which will take place on wednesday when they return. We got a crisis team coming out tomorrow morning to work with students and staff. They will be here all day to have a conversation and listen and hear the raw emotions that will be obviously spilling out. Reporter until recently, richmond had been successfully reducing gun violence. I do know we have extra officers working the street right now. Many of these shootings are happening in the evening, in the nighttime, so where theyre occurring and the times theyre occurring is where we bolstered our patrol presence.
