The business, like so many in the bay area, proud to hang a picture of the Academy Awardwinning actor on the wall. A really, really nice guy. Reporter williams death feels personal to many in the day bay area. He supported many charity. He was longtime donor and volunteer at the San Francisco zoo where a howler monkey was just named after him in june. He was a kid at heart. Robin a toy store collected robots and rare action figures. He is very sincere. I mean, he is very humble. And then he shook hands and talk to a customer like just average person, you know. So no ego. Very nice. Everybody loved him. Reporter williams was also an avid bike rider. Staff at Sunshine Bicycle Center in fairfax say a short exchange often turned into their own private standup routine. Me personally because im from scotland, he heard my scottish accent and immediately likes going to that and he is talking in a scottish accent himself and cracking all these jokes about scotland. He had everyone laughing. We saw the gift. He had the gift of laughter. Reporter rory worked with williams on many of his San Franciscobased films. His favorite memory after a hard week working on bicentennial man breaking his ribs in laughter, acting as a air Traffic Controller for pigeon squs in the park. He had a voice and a name for every bird. And i will cher theyre all my days. Reporter he says he was extremely funny but never stopped being professional, humble and kind. This young girl lives here in this neighborhood in san jose, the willow glen district. Now of course williams played the lead role in patch adams about an unconventional doctor who treated Cancer Patients with laughter. Well, this young lady did not have to act being a cancer patient because she was one. Hi. Hi. Whats your name . Cammie. Reporter that 7yearolds real name is cameron, and she was not acting. She was battling cancer in real life, like the other children in the ward. Today at age 22, cameron brook stanley is cancerfree. She remember house Robin Williams cared deeply about the kids in the cast. He was such a real person. So when even off the set, when we werent when we werent filming, he was just trying to hang out with the kids, and trying to make us forget that we were sick. Reporter cameron was undergoing both chemotherapy and radiation for a tumor on her kidney. Williams gave her a nickname, little buddha because of her bald head. He didnt really act like this big star. He just acted like one of us. I mean, he even during lunch time, we would all be sitting out on a table outside, and he would run over. Hey, did you try the lemonade . Oh, my gosh, its so good. Reporter cameron has keepsake photos of the patch adams shoot in an album, including this one with williams with the 12 children cast members. She said there was a real chemistry between them. We both loved to laugh. We both loved to tell jokes. And thats what our friendship was is just laughs and we worked really well together. Just an amazing man. Reporter cameron was first cast as an extra, but ended up as a principle with a speak role. She is convinced williams helped her through a challenging period in her life. Today she is a Fashion Designer of crystal clutch bags and Robin Williams living legacy is teaching her the value of laughter. Definitely laughter is the best medicine. Well, the death of Robin Williams is being felt in a very deep way at glide memorial in San Francisco. He headlined several fundraising events for gliechltd his relationship with the Charitable Organization goes back 30 years. At one point he even took the stage for over two hours with fellow comedian bill cosby. And it was just dynamic and sensitive and laughing and people rejoicing, and people clapping. It was like one of the most important events in their lives. The reverend Cecil Williams showed abc 7 news some autographed items. He says it connected in a special with people at glide who are battling drug addiction and mental illness. Abc 7 former entertainment reporter don sanchez is also remembering Robin Williams. He is, as so many are. Particularly running into williams on the red carpet at the 2007 San FranciscoInternational Film festival. Well, experts at the National Suicide prevention lifeline say they are receiving more calls than usual, and they say Robin Williams death is one of the reasons. Laura anthony spoke with one local mother who lost her adult daughter to suicide, a case with eerie similarities in fact to williams. She was, like i said, very accomplished and very high energy. Reporter Teresa Ferguson knows well what the family of Robin Williams is going through. She lost her 31yearold daughter, jeanni to suicide six years ago. The method, hanging. Eventually she just gave up hope that she was ever going to be able to get better. And in fact, one of the final things she said was i dont think i can ever have kids. And so how can i get married knowing that i can never have kids, because i cant take care of myself. Reporter since jeannis death, she has devoted much of her energy to out of the darkness, a National Foundation dedicated to suicide prevention. Knowing the star battled depression, ferguson recently tried to contact williams publicist to see if he might speak at their october march in oakland. This just happened yesterday. Ive already had a number of patients that hatalked about it today. Reporter williams suicide has prompted some patients to talk about things they might not have otherwise. About how upset it was and its led to a discussion about suicide and their safety. It raises Peoples Awareness that this is an illness. That its a serious illness, that we have to take it seriously. And that is there treatment available. There. Are still many, many people who wont even admit that their child died by suicide. There is something wrong with that, you know. We have to get to the point where we see this as an illness, a disease that needs to be treated. Reporter like williams, ferguson says it appeared her daughter had everything to live for. Miss are looking for a vandal who did more than 25,000 damage to the National AidsMemorial Grove in golden gate park. Some time friday night, somebody cut off tree limbs, smashed flower planters and damaged fencing. This is the fifth or sixth time the grove has been targeted just this year. A recreation and Parks Department spokesperson says the damage is consistent. So its possible the same person is doing it. The most recent incident in the aid Memorial Grove is particularly devastating. Its such a peaceful place. And to see trees chopped down and benches smashed is really upsetting for people. The tenacre memorial site is privately funded and maintained by volunteers. California wants to get back in the running to land teslas new battery plant, and it appears Governor Brown is willing to bend some rules to make that happen.
