Five to six vehicles involved in this one in san ramon, southbound 680 before crow canyon, three left lanes are blocked and two people are having to be transported due to injuries so keeping an eye on that one, right now about a mile and a half backup. And we are watching another round of storms hitting the Santa Cruz Mountains pretty hard. Were not talking so much about the rain this time but about the amount it is costing to fix problems caused by all the wet weather. This massive tree branch fell yesterday afternoon. I just checked the chp traffic website and it shows its still closed a hard closure there. Price tag to fix everything up here in the mountains is big. The director of public works for Santa Cruz County says more than 20 million in road damage has been done and the county is waiting for financial help for the state and federal governments. Ive talked to a lot of different public works directors that are saying, how many millions have you got . Were probably the worst in santa cruz, one of the worst counties. We just took a direct hit. Abc7 news was on the scene last night along highway 13. Police tell us the driver carjacked the jeep. The chase lasted only four minutes but look how dramatically it ended when the driver crashed into a tree and then rolled down an embankment. Two other vehicles were damaged in that collision. The driver and a passenger tried to run away but Police Caught up with them not far away and arrested both of them. The parents of a san bruno woman killed in a hit and run are asking for lep to find the driver. She was hit by a car on december 19. Her parents say she was walking to starbucks like she did every day. She died of her injuries two days later. San bruno police held a News Conference are flynns parents yesterday. They say she volunteered at the Humane Society and loved to paint. She was born here, raised here, lived her entire life here. She was the kindest, sweetest, most caring and thoughtful person you could ever want to meet. Police believe flynn was hit by a white mid size suv. Teachers in the Fremont Unified School district may face layoffs if officials cant figure out what other ways to balance a 23 million budget shortfall. The money is not coming from the state. Governor browns preliminary budget reflects a reduction in the overall general fund. Fremont School Officials had predicted the district would get over 260 more per student beginning in july. As the budget stands now, that number would shrink to 76 per student. The district is remaining optimistic. It wants to hire 48 more teachers for the new year. San Francisco Muni is trying to come up with a new way to keep cars out of the sunset tunnel. Muni street cars have run through that tunnel since 1928. It is no secret youre not supposed to drive there, but every now and again, drivers get in it anyway. Our Media Partners looked into this problem and they found out this has happened 24 times just since 2010. You can see what happens there. Cars get stuck on the tracks. It disrupts service on the muni line for hours. Now muni is trying to come up with a solution to keep cars out of the tunnel. Were planning to add more speed bumps on the road later this week and were going to do a full assessment to see what else we can do, whether thats more signage, more lighting. Munis spokesperson says existing signs, speed bumps, and lane striping dont seem to be doing the trick. Look at what highway 37 looked like last month during the rains, so this problem cannot be ignored. It just floods here. It was under water. They had to shut it down. Caltrans has ideas, but as a marin independent journal is reporting, they will cost about 8 million. They are talking about making this a toll road to help bring in some money to pay for these ideas. Improvement ideas include replacing the drainage pipes with larger pipes, leveling the roadway because of settling, the westbound lanes have dropped about two feet lower than the eastbound lanes. Additional pumping and maybe even addings a barrier. Highway 37 connects vallejo and marin county goods and commuters move through here about 40,000 vehicles a day. And its getting busier. It got caught on some power lines. Right now, nicasio valley road is reopened after it was closed overnight. This has been a problem area in the last couple of storms for people who use that road. The company alleges potential safety issues at that dock because of the size of the golden gate ferries. Golden gate ferry contends angel island ferry is just maneuvering for dredging improvements at that dock. New protected bike lanes along San Franciscos embarcadero are still in the works as traffic there reaches critical levels. The stretch of road between at t park and Fishermans Wharf is now on the citys High Injury Network according to our partners at hoodline. What that means is even though these streets represent just 6 of all city streets, they account for 60 of severe and fatal pedestrian crashes. So now the city hopes a physical separation like planters or concrete barriers or curbs are going to reduce crashes. The project is right now just in the design phase. No completion date at this time. If you live or work in oakland, do not worry when you hear emergency sirens burglarying across the city today. The city will be holding a full system test of its upgraded emergency siren so the first one is at noon.
