To vallejo. Where are you heading to in vallejo. We have reports of possible damage from the earthquake. We did get looking at the chp twitter feed and they are saying westbound off southeast sonoma boulevard closed, westbound i80 south of route 37 closed at this time. Other south route 37 roads open and caltran is on of course, keep an eye on that. Are you noticing anything apparently we lost cornell. Cornell talking about 121 there in Sonoma County and he was shut down. That is, of course, the prudent thing to do. Name there are possibilities for damage because we remember the last thing you want is the type of situation like we had in the sonoma quake. And 880 just pancaked and it resulted in 53 deaths. So lets get right to where you were talking about the traffic information. Whats going on. You see cars coming across. Looks like traffic is moving fine here. We go over to the bay bridge, it doesnt appear that is affected right now either. We are looking at traffic thats able to move across. If you are headed into the north bay we want to warm you we have issues. And heres a look at that rise. This is across the bridge. Traffic is still coming in as you see from the east bay. There is so far no damage that caltran is reporting from the bay bridge just yet. Take into the north bay. Cornell is reporting there are closers and indeed there are. Westbound 80 to westbound highway 37 and sonoma boulevard off highway 37. Thats where you will find the closers because of the severe blocking. Right now we have the traffic that is not allowed to go through. Of course, you want to avoid it. It was said earlier if you dont need to go out, you shouldnt. You really shouldnt. Because chp is having to turn around commuters. We take you right up to highway 171. Theres also a couple gas leaks they are reporting. We hear there are traffic lights that went down in the roadway so that is also blocking highway 121 and the overcrossing. As you heard cornell say a moment ago. Road lights are down blocking the roadway. Also in sonoma with the Power Outages matt told us about earlier, thats affecting traffic light. All traffic lights and overhead lights, those are out. And you want to a void that. Westbound 80 to we felt bound 37. Lets go back to the map. Thats where we are seeing the closers here. Also westbound 37 and sonoma offramp. Again, closed due to severe buckling. As we take you farther to the north. Highway 121 currently blocked and traffic being turned around over a train overcrossing in that area. It is also closed. Red lights are down and they are blocking the roadway. Sonoma highway just to the west of highway 29. Now, that is also closed due to a possible gas leak they are reporting there. Apparently able to smell some gas in the air. So certainly we are look at severe traffic advisories in the north bay. Heres the rest of the bay area. Thats just fine. Arent seeing any other issues for roads damaged. But we will be getting in reports from caltran as to whether or not any other roadways are affected. But as you saw look at the bay bridge, we can see the traffic is moving along out there. So it doesnt appear that traffic is affected if you need to come in from the east bay into San Francisco. Again, over the Golden Gate Bridge. Folks are headed in and out of marin and San Francisco, that they are able to cross the bridge without a problem. Of course, we will be monitoring this. So for the entire morning. Keep it here. I will send it back to matt and chris. All right, thank you. We appreciate it. We talked about the possibility of aftershocks out there. Im look at the usgs website. 8 kilometers south, southwest of napa. People may still feel shake out there. I remember from usgs interviews in the past that within a week of a fairly major quake like this one, you have a 5, 10 chance of feeling something about the same magnitude or greater. 50 chance of one magnitude lower or less. Get ready for lots of shaking. Over the next week. Check out youtube here. This is video, actually, of the actual time. This is a picture of some of the damage. This is from tara. Great picture, fallen masonry from the Methodist Church in vallejo. He tweeted a lot. This is cleaning up by tennessee street u see the glass is broken in the storefront and objection like some things have fallen off the shelves as well. Lets check out video from youtube of the actual moment. [crashing sounds] an earthquake, an earthquake its an earthquake its an earthquake thats how an earthquake looks . All right. Obviously very frightening for this family. A lot of families there in the north bay. See how quickly it started and how strong it was there, especially if you are in the American Canyon area where the earthquake started this morning at 3 to in the morning, scaring a lot of people out of their beds. Wow. And the wits that family kept about them. Even there you can sense they were very alerted and slightly alarmed, they did the right thing, got everybody up. Weve been checking some of the Transit Agency twitter accounts and calling them from the abc7 newsroom. So far all has been quiet from sfo. Normally in these situations they would start checking the tracks and inspecting the transbay tube. We imagine if they arent getting information out right now, thats something crews might be doing before they start running bart trains. Uninot seeing anything about disrupted service or track issues. Hopefully our transit is not being disrupted by this earthquake. As the morning goes along, i know they are discovering more and more damage. Cornell is on his way to vallejo. What are you seeing this morning . Just passed over the bear island bridge. The chp has stopped traffic heading westbound toward the point, toward novato at the very top of the bridge. Its unsafe for me to get out of the car, obviously, to find out whats going on. But there appears to be some inspection going on on the bear island bridge. The chp has stopped traffic. I would say theres about 100 cars behind a couple of chp cruisers and there is an officer that appears to be inspecting some of the pavement. I would expect that that would be part of the earthquake. Again, i am heading toward vallejo to report to investigate possible damage there. Passing a chevron station here in American Canyon that appears to be open but the pumps are closed. Theres a lot of yellow tape surrounding all of the pumps and it appears to be some of the pardon me, we have a fire truck here on our side. Again, the chevron station appears to be open but the pumps are closed. We have a lot of the people working there trying to figure out whats going on. Cornell, we have video sent in, folks are looking at a store in American Canyon. Look at the things of that fallen off the shelves. This appears to be the produce aisle and bottles and boxes just fallen over. This, even if it hasnt caused major, major, major damage, it certainly is one that will cost a lot of money to a lot of businesses and quite a mess and minor damage this morning. This is definitely in the immediate epicenter area within that few mile vicinity did cause quite a bit of damage. A lot of the damage wont be found until people start heading into their businesses and places of work later on this morning and also as everyone is checking on everyone this morning. We see the video of this family. They will have to check their home. Looks like things are flying off the walls there. So people are going to be inspecting the damage all day long. We did get information from the sonoma raceway in regard to the prerace. They say until told otherwise, they are good to go. They wont get more until they get to the facility and inspect the facility and structures. People will realize what the damages are as they arrive at their workplace, people wake up and get out of bed if they werent already shaken. They will check out their homes and places of business and as it gets light outside we will see more on with a is obvious out there. All of this. Wise things to do. And this comes in a timely manner a way of a reminder to us all. Obviously october will mark the 25th anniversary of the 6. 9 earthquake. We are looking at the Walmart Store in napa. If you are a wine lover, that breaks your heart to see all the bottles fallen over there and destroyed. Its been a bad morning for glass bottles. Thats the case in safe way stores and Walmart Stores. Heres another picture. Damage from the earthquake this morning, downtown. Having a hard time seeing that. Obviously the damage to buildings significant in some areas. Heres the moment when the quake struck this morning. Its a 6. 0 quake that took place at 3 20 this morning. The usgs said that could go up. Preliminary magnitude could go up and it could go down as we get information from their data stations throughout the morning and the possibility of aftershocks. Weve had one possibility of one in napa this morning at 5 01. We are keeping an eye on the usgs website to see if that will be updated. We got a report in from the Bay City News service. California Highway Patrol is reporting a portion of the state highway 37 in vallejo has been closed. Sonoma boulevard. For evaluationing if the 6. 2 magnitude quake. The Us Geological survey is reporting it took place about three miles northwest of American Canyon at 3 20 this morning. Pg e is reporting tens of thousands of customers are without power in the bay area, particularly in napa and Sonoma County. Their website, their pg e outage map is showing significant outage in several communities and that includes the east bay as well. No damage to roadways in the south bay, peninsula and east bay. This is taped feed we have coming in from one of our mobile units. As we look at that, we want to bring in another viewer who was awakened by the earthquake this morning. Corzine this is in napa. Clearly there is some building damage, partial collapsed building. A lot of masonry and older buildings. Some of those definitely seeing the results of the shake near the epicenter this morning. As we continue to look at that, near the epicenter is corzine who lives in American Canyon who has taken the time to call us this morning with her experience. Good morning. When a wakeup, huh . Yeah. It was really crazy. I just got in the bathroom and i was laying in bed, trying to fall back to sleep and i didnt understand why. And about 16 minutes later the earthquake hit. Go ahead. It was really more jarring. I live gosh, i live nearby the epicenter of that, of the other one. That was more a chicagoing, rolling. This one was jarring like somebody was just shaking the house quickly. I got up quickly to go look for my mom. She was doing okay. Not a lot of breakage as far as we can tellin side the house. Some glass. But we are happy to see the electricity was working and as the lights were coming on. But we didnt know the magnitude of the earthquake. Have you been able to go outside and talk with any of your neighbors . I called a few already and the first thing i did was call my brother and sister, who my brother lives here in American Canyon, as well. They have a twostory house so they had a lot more wreckage than we did. Then my sister in napa. She has a lot more damage inside the house. But my neighbors are doing okay. I was check across the street as far as they are concerned, yeah. Do you mind going into a little more detail about the type of damage that you are hearing from your relatives . And whether you are smelling gas or seeing powerlines down, anything like that . Nothing like that. Everybody is saying just glasses inside the house, a fishtank and checking the gas meters, making sure that was okay. But as far as anything, other damage i could see, there was nothing. As the lights come up and the sun comes up, you have more damage to check out around your home. Got news is you guys all have power. When you went outside you could see the power is on in your neighborhood . No, i havent even been outside yet. But when you talked to your neighbors were they saying their power was on. All their power was on in our neighborhood wishes is really good. Thats certainly good news this morning. And then your reaction . When the shaking started, what were your thoughts . What was going through your head. I started remembering the north woods earthquake right away. You can hear all the powerlines going off, the windows are making noises, you know, shuttering. And then i jumped up right away, got my flash light and went to go check on my mom. We are glad to hear that everybody is okay in your family. Thank you so much forechecking in with us. All right. Thank you. We have another caller with us this morning. Robert garcia. I hope i have your name right. Thank you so much for calling us this morning. Where are you located and can you describe your earthquake experience this morning . American canyon road. I was asleep. I thought my husband was getting up to use the restroom, only my bed didnt stop shaking. Everything was ratling. It was so scary. I thought my house was going to split in half because its a mobile home. And it finally stopped and we just got up and i ran outside to check on my neighbors. And everybody started coming out and making sure that everybody was okay, which was just wonderful. People across the street, they had a mirror and it fell on their floor and shattered everywhere. We had a bunch of stuff fall off the walls and stuff like that. But we are just waiting now to check for the gag and make sure nothing i dont smell any gas. We have power. People on the other side of 29 dont have power. So we are kind of east absolutely. You know there are people in that vicinity without power and you are right in the heart of it all. And you can talk about whether or not you smell anything unusual, gas, all that is okay . Yes. So far. I mean, we are good on the gas and stuff like that. My brother, i called everybody, checked to make sure. My daughterinlaws and my daughters are in yachtville, and they felt it there. I have friends who pelt it in hayward, in novato. I wasnt near 89 so i dont know what that felt like, but, man, if it was finishing like today, its scary stuff. It was bigger and lots longer in 89. So count your blessings because this was scary enough and apparently destructive enough, especially in the napasonoma area. Thanks for calling. Thank you. Ama daetz is live in our newsroom. She has some more information for us. Ama. Hi, matt. Yes, i am here up in the newsroom. Ive been monitoring twitter and i know we are getting in some video now of second and maine in napa where there was a Building Collapsed. But i have been checking twitter, looking at pictures people are sending. A woman sent pictures of a target store in Pleasant Hill where there is stuff off the shelves on to the floors. A lot going on there. A lot of people are saying that it shook them, got them out of bed. Somebody said they cant get back to sleep now. But we have a photographer who is in napa and apparently there is some sort after Building Collapse at second and maine. I was just looking at the street view to see whats in the area and theres the downtown brewery and restaurant. It is right near Veterans Memorial park, if you are familiar with that area. Theres a Wells Fargo Bank across the street, as well. We are trying to get the video turned around. Juan, are you on the phone . Can you hear me. Yeah, i can hear you, im at second and maine in napa. We are looking at a collapsed brick building. I believe its the Alexander Building above the carpadia restaurant. I think thats the name. No rescues going on. Apparently its not an occupied building but the corner is gone and bricks in the sleep. People have woke up and they are wandering around the area looking at the damage. Around the corner the county courthouse, the old county courthouse, also has cornice missing and there are bricks on the street. The power is out downtown napa. The police have cordoned off this area but theres no activity here. Any must be busy with other things. Thats the righthand top of the building . Thats where its kind of come down and the roof is kind of hang on . Is that what we are seeing. I think what you are seeing is unreinforced masonry and what happens. Actually, im looking, it does appear to have reinforcing iron up there on the corner and the bricks fell around it. That doesnt look like anybody doesnt look like anybody was in there or no emergency crews are responding right now to that location . Theres absolutely no activity theres no rescue activity at all right here. Juan, thank you forechecking in again. Thats at second and maine in napa. We will continue to monitor this situation and just make sure there is nobody around needing rescue but you see the bricks came off down the building, off the corner of the building. Ama, thank you so much. As we continue to get reports in, its becoming obvious napa is one of the areas with significant damage. Chp is tweeting out that Congress Valley road and human avenue are both closed for significant roadway damage. Thats what they are calling it as you look at the area. The chp is reporting no roadway damage so far in the marin and santa rosa areas. Most of the damage is in napa and sonoma area. Heres the second and maine street area. They were talking about the shop. He was talking about the unreinforced masonry. Maybe partial reinforcement but you see the bricks of that fallen off from that building. Definitely its not a situation you want to walkout side if you dont have to right now. Certainly you dont want to be walk around barefoot. And as people run out of their homes in these situations. But significant damage. Ive seen tweets about chimneys, as well. Thats obviously a concern as well when you have the brick chimneys. Many have fallen down. We are getting reports that people are walk out in their neighborhoods and seeing chimneys have fallen down and you dont want to be out because of the possibility of powerlines. Thats a serious issue. We have tens of thousands of outages in the Sonoma County area. As i look at some of the more significant ones, looking at 101 as you are looking around the Charles M Schultz museum, they are reporting about 5900 customers affected in that area. There are several of those surrounding that area but they are pockets. Its not everywhere. Its not every location and theres pockets of these outages. Looking at some significant ones in sonoma. The Sonoma Golf Club in that area. We are talking about several reports of 2,000 here, 2,000 there, 1500 here. Those add up. If you are having a hard time getting a hold of somebody that has a phone thats connected to some type of power, that may be what is taking place now. Also looking in the skyline at the Wilderness Park area in napa. Looking at significant outage there, one is 5300 customers. And the surrounding area, they are all connected, several thousand more. 2100 in one place, 2500 in another. The reality is there are tens of thousands of Power Outages in the area with this earthquake. What is going on around the roads in the bay area . If you are out and about the chp is saying they are finding no reports at this moment damage to roadways in south bay in the peninsula or the east bay. They are out there checking. Napa, at cuttings wharf there is damage to the roadway there. Affected sections are coned off. The Golden Gate Bridge appears to be fine right now. Traffic is very light. That one doing okay as are most of the state bridges. Vallejo, we continue to have a problem. Again, this is and this is, of course, leading on to the new eastern sandoval. The ba bridge, as you know, new. Eastern span they want to open it up because it was going to be stronger in the case of an earthquake. Cheryl jennings joins us now. Cheryl, you were around in covering the 89 quake. We all felt that quake back then. When you look at the damage to the buildings of that fallen down, obviously more damage from the 89 quake but does it bring up any reminders to you . At 3 20 this morning it shook both of us out of bed. And i thought this is a quake and we expected it to be over and then it kept going and going. Because the new age of digital media, i sent out a tweet saying how did you feel . Did you feel it . Where did you feel it and i got bombarded with tweets. I know you have some damage you have shown on the show. It says long rolling to sharp jolt in san mateo. Thought one of my kids had woken up and was kicking our bed. Foster city felt it and near walnut creek. It got stronger as it went on. Pleasanton, felt the whole house moving, creeing and cracking. Doors opened. So weve got tweets from so many different people in the bay area, all across the bay area. It was really a deja vu. And it was a whole new way to cover news, which we we didnt have back in 89. Social media was not an issue. So i have pictures and i want to share with people as soon as i can get these things and get them into our system. Damage in the 89 quake was so much worse. But we really dont know how bad this is going to be because 3 20 00 in the morning, people are just waking up. I hear reports of people being evacuated in the American Canyon area because of gas smells. A man said i grabbed my kids and ran out of the house. Some people had to run out of the building and are sitting in their cars because theres no place to go in the middle of the night. Anytime you have bricks falling you worry about people possibly trapped. We are hoping that will not be the case in this particular quake. Weve got some new video in . Lets check out the mobile home fire thats taking place in napa as we can show some of the video here. Fire is a big concern because you are dealing with the possibility of what cheryl is talking about, the possibility of gas leaks out there. Any type of flame or fire out there could obviously be fueled by that, as well. If you smell gas, call somebody and let pg e know and let people know you are smelling gas in the area because any spark can cause significant damage. We have video from napa. Here it is. You see the flames and smokes coming out from a mobile home fire that you can see significant flames. Mobile homes, Mobile Home Parks, they are all dealing with similar types of Natural Gas Resources that you can see in apartment buildings where they are sharing a lot of those resources. So you can see they are having problems with i guess a fire hydrant in the area and they are using garden hoses. A firefighter using garden hose to water down the neighboring homes. A dangerous situation. Got news, if there is some coming from that particular fire, we are getting word that at this Mobile Home Park where three homes have apparently, at least, been destroyed, no injuries reported out of there. So life before property. Lets hope thats the case that that no injuries, despite the facts you see the flames burning at the Mobile Home Park in napa valley after the quake. At least two two or three are te reports we are getting. Some displaced, no home to go to this morning and cars also scorched as a result. And cheryl, you are here with us. That brings up memories. The marina fire in San Francisco. In that case much wider and an entire neighborhood scorched and on fire. I hope we get to talk to somebody from the American Canyon area. If you recall, the marina that was also it was the hickory motion they had and all the buildings that the earthquake reinforced, they just collapsed. And sadly they cost lives and peoples homes and took time to rebuild but the images were taken around the world. And the world thought all of San Francisco was on fire wishes was not the case. And this situation, my heart goes out to those who lost their homes. Its the middle of the night and you dont know whats going on and where do you go . Speaking of images, we have day dave who shot this video, hes on the phone with us. When you arrived on the scene, what did you see . I saw a firefighter using a garden hose. It was pretty incredible. A large water main break in front of the mobile home community. And i didnt think much of it but when i saw the firefighter use the garden hose to try to protect that exposed fire, i realized the hydrants were completely out of service. And the fire was blazing. So i assume its just containment now . They are trying to keep the fire to the homes of that already burned and trying to make sure that doesnt spread to the other homes . Yeah, thats correct. As far as i know, there was four to five mobile homes that were burning. Three to the ground. They were bringing in more and more engines because they only had tank water to use. And i also believe the garden hose water supply was limited, as well. So its not a good situation. Real quick, we talked about the possibility of natural gas. Did you know if any of this was fueled by natural gas . I know theres a lot of concern out there this morning. I havent had a formal answer, but what i am hearing on the radio, these are all gas pipe related or broken gas line related fires. We have seen reports on twitter, the smell of gas is pretty overwhelming in parts of napa right now. So did you experience some of that . Yeah. You know, i just left near downtown napa. It was a singlefamily residence Building Collapse. I dont believe anybody was injured. But the collapse knocked the gas meter completely off the foundation and theres a pretty good gas leak on that particular residence. I know pg e and fire responded to multiple gas line breaks. They are prioritizing so only if there is a fire are they going to that. They are spread thin now as well. Clearly, when you were close to the fire, did you notice that other residence of this Mobile Home Park evacuating the area . Were they gathering at a certain spot . Yes. The Fire Department was doing an orderly evacuation as best they could. They were trying to pressure everybody to the clubhouse, which is in front of the mobile home area. There were also several ambulances coming from different parts of the Mobile Home Park because of people falling. Its a bad situation all around. Looks like everybody got out of there. Can you just give us a pinpoint location, locator on this mobile home . Yeah, its northwest of downtown napa, maybe a couple miles. Its its off of highway 29. Obviously emergency vehicles wont take my bicycle that area so they will be in that area, so if you dont have to be near that area, please avoid right now. Thats a great point. They called in the napa sheriff because he complained of outsiders coming in to look at the fire. And who knows. Definitely a security risk. People are awake at this time. A lot of concern as people exactly going to places that they shouldnt be this morning. Theres a lot of danger out there, as well. Did you notice any debris or when you were driving to the scene . I did. I saw a couple of small trees down. But thats about the only thing that i encountered in my travels. Im sure theres much more out there. Thank you so much, dave. We appreciate you obviously shooting this video and letting us know whats going on in downtown napa and talking about it. The great news is it doesnt appear anybody was injured. Our traffic reporter is busy. They are getting the impact on the bay area roadways. Yes, indeed. This is the Golden Gate Bridge. You see traffic is able to move across fine now. A moment ago we were wondering if there was any damage where the pavement met the bridge on the north end. That is not the case. This is actually it. All the damage is pretty much centered in napa and vallejo and those areas. The Golden Gate Bridge, as you travel and heading to the north, looks like everybody is able to move without any problems. Now, we do have the problems here. Buckling in the roadway. Its along westbound 37, both directions of highway 37. But you are not able to got out from 80. We have that and also westbound 37. Highway 29 there you cannot make that transition. Again, we have some road buckling there. And traffic lights are out in napa and other parts of Sonoma County. Its very dark out there. Dont travel if you dont have to. We have the sonoma highway, as well as highway 29. Thats where we have some closers there. Possible gas leak as well reported and traffic lights knocked down f you are trying to travel across the creek there, that bridge also very damaged. No traffic is able to transfer over there. All right. We also have a chp officer on the phone right now. Who is with us . Good morning. Daniel hill. Good morning. Thanks for joining us this morning. What are you seeing out there . What are some of the reports you are getting right now . So far you covered. I want to update you on the 37 closer. Currently we only have the westbound 37 to sonoma boulevard offramp closed. All other roads are open and caltran is on the scene making sure that can be reopened as soon as possible. We have roadway buckling in the unappropriated areas of napa county and Sonoma County. Officers are responding and getting the county road people out there to fix the roadways. But we are reminding people those roadways are damaged and can cause flat tires or worse so drive carefully in the area. A lot of areas where signal lights and its important to treat all signal lights as four way stop sign or allway stop signs if the lights arent functionen. Overall the freeing system is intact. No damage reported anywhere else in the area. The damage is confined really to the napa and sonoma area. All areas of the bay area are checked and nothing has been noticed throughout the rest of the bay area. Can i and you one quick question . Do we have damage reported on bart or any of the other mass transit systems . None thats been related to us so far. As you know, bart takes painstaking steps to make sure their system is okay. We havent heard any reports of any damage to their systems just yet. Any cars caught on the roadways that were closed . So far a few cars have been hit by the roadways cracks, getting flat tires and so forth. We responded to each incident as reported to the chp and help them make sure we can get them on their way again. And the only thing is a little bit of Property Damage to the cars to the cracking of the roadway. Thank you, officer hill. We will send it back over to christian, matt and cheryl right now. Great information. Right when she was talking, the San FranciscoTransit Authority checked in and said everything is normal, all routes okay, no problem with the light rail. So at least in San Francisco your travels are fine as well. A lot of tourists in town dealing with an earthquake a very San Franciscolike experience for them this morning. We will check in with cornell barnard. What are you seeing . The situation im seeing here right now, all of the power is out here in downtown napa. We are seeing quite a lot of damage to a lot of very Old Buildings here in the downtown napa area. Our photographer is showing whats going on here with this building. The corner has collapsed here at brown and Second Street. As you can see, there was some possible retrofit going on there but it did not help the facade of the building. All the brick has crumbled on to the street below. Luckily no one was hurt because it was so early. I want to show you this here. When we came on the scene, the building on the other side of the street, which is a wells fargo building, again, a very old building, a lot of the cornices from the top have crumbled down on to the street. If you lived here in napa, it was a rude awakening. Darby was asleep at this time like most people. Darby, tell me your experience. What did you feel . I was sleeping in my room with my two friends, and i personally was sleeping in a hammock. My hammock was moving back and forth. My bed moved to the middle of the room. My bookshelf had oallen on top of my friend and pretty much everything in my house has fallen down and broken. You know, unfortunately thank god my friends houses are a lot worse and im so happy no harm has happened to my family and i hope everyone is okay. Your friends, a bookshelf falling, are they okay . Yeah, they are fine. Just some scrapes and bruises. Nothing bad. So you were up out of the hammock and what did you do . Did you run out of the building . Well, i went and checked out the rest of the house with my family, and we checked on our pets, of course. Then we went out of our house and went and checked up on our neighbors. For the most part everybody is okay . Yeah, everyone is good. Can you believe all the damage here . I cant believe. Ive been Walking Around, and its unbelievable how much damage there is to napa valley. Have you ever experienced an earthquake before . When i was younger. We experienced one i think a few weeks ago, very small. But the biggest one we had was probably i think a few years back, i was younger. But nothing as big as this. Darby, thank you very much. We actually have people Walking Around in bath robes. Good morning. Good morning. You live in the downtown area . We are live on kgo tv. We are . Tell me what you were doing. You were sleeping obviously. Over there. And what did it feel like. Pretty powerful, pretty violent. Everything came right off the walls. Pretty nasty. Did you stay in your room . Did they tell you to evacuate . Everybody met on the street afterwards. After the initial thing nothing much happened. Where are you from . From new york. We are great tourists. We knew this was going to happen. Thank you very much. Again, a lot of damage in the downtown area. Weve seen a lot of building inspectors with flash lights trying type expect the top of the buildings around the brick buildings here. Were told there is damage to the old courthouse, which is about a block from where we are. You cant see anything because there was no power here in the downtown area this morning. It is completely dark. But again, building inspectors and a lot of police officers, a lot of Fire Departments, firefighting engines just driving around the downtown area with their search lights on, flash lights on, making sure the buildings are safe. Again, we are told that this building was vacant. This was a restaurant and bar obviously. But at the very top it was office space. We are told the office space on the corner was not vacant at the time. We will send it back to you guys now. Cornell, we appreciate it. As the sun comes up, that will help a lot of people figure out exactly what type of damage is out there. I just received my assignment so i will head to sonoma and Cheryl Jennings will be taking over for me right now. Great job, matt. Thanks for keeping us northeast. I know you will keep us informed of what is happening in the sonoma area. In the meantime i want to go to ama daetz monitoring. What is coming in . It was interesting to wake up. The last one that was this big, you were wondering is it going to be bigger . And we are finding out where there is damage. Latest picture i retweeted, this is from ian. He said my house and south napa is a mess. No injuries fortunately. But a kim any. Take a look. You see the bricks just lying there on the ground. A man tweeted, i tweet add picture of the fire, the video we were seeing with the homes on fire in napa valley. That was some of the latest video we were showing you. Keep going down a little more and we have a tweet. You see the picture. Said this is where it stinks to have a twostory house. You you see the inside of their kitchen, the stove and the oven and the drawers came out. You see all the things came crashing down. Window cleaner, anything you can find in the kitchen has come crashing down to the ground. We are getting a lot of good pictures coming in from people. Scroll down more, chris, napatwowheeler is his handle. He tweeted from his area. Obviously hes in napa. Looks like a pantry. All the food came off the shelves. You see a lot of broken glass. Theres a globe thats down on the floor. Looks like vases have broken as well. We are getting a lot of pictures. We should point out we are streaming on our website abc7news. Com all of this. And, of course, keep wheating us. Send us your photos and we can share them with other people. We arent hearing of anything too drastic at this point but there are problems off highway 37, as weve been mentioning. Therethere is a race today and e told so far thats still going on but we have to get more information on the facilities and find out if everything is good to go there. Lets check with david louie. The usgs is officially calling it a 6. 0 . Thats correct. Thats the number they are using right now. But the seismologists have been called in or busy questioning the numbers. Northern california has lots of sensors and all that data is tronly transferred through the menlo park usgs offices and it takes human analytics to decide the important details such as the depth and which fault it was on thats correct type of thing. We have tom broker with us now. A seismologist who has been crunching the numbers. Good morning, tom. Maybe stand here so we get the best light on you. What can you tell us so far about the earthquake this morning . It was a largest earthquake weve had since the earthquake back if 1989. It occurred sort of the middle of the triangle between napa, sonoma and vallejo. We are calling it the south napa earthquake. Have you been able to pinpoint the epicenter . Yeah. The location is very well determined. The depth was about six miles, steve. So the location is not an issue. We arent quite 100 sure on the fault that caused it. There are a couple of faults in that area. Right now looking hard at the fault thats called the west napa fault. Thats one of the things we will be looking at in the next few hours and days. Is the west napa fault known for activity, even at a small magnitude . Oh, yeah, its known to produce earthquake and its definitely been on our radar screen. Its not a surprise. There are a number of earthquake faults in that part of the bay area. Its not a surprise to have an earthquake there. You had some interpretation here. Six miles deep. That compares to 11 miles for the loma earthquake from nearly 25 years ago. Does depth in any way transmit more seismic waves . Todays earthquake was pretty typical for the depth for earthquakes in the bay area. It had with a is called a strike force motion, the horizontal motion which is also very typical and the direction of the motion was very typical in the bay area. So in a lot of ways it looks like a very typical bay area earthquake. Its just a bit larger than we normally get. The fact that the saking was felt through a wide part of the bay area, even down in the peninsula and down in the south bay, what does that tell you . Well, this was as i said, this is our largest earthquake since 89. It will be felt over a large area. So thats not a obviously people are concerned about aftershocks and there have been tiny ones. Can we expect something greater than that . Yeah. We wouldnt be surprised if we have at least a minoritytwofive aftershock. Theres about a 50 chance of that in the next few days. We would expect, we do expect aftershocks on the earthquakes. At this point are more numbers of your team coming in . How is the rest of your day rolling out . Thats right. We are mounting our response as we speak and we are pulling together the right groups to look at certain portions, aspects of this earthquake. Thank you very much. We appreciate it. So thats the situation here at the usgs. We have to wrap up. We will be staying here and continue to update you as the morning rolls along. In menlo park at usgs, david louie, abc7 news. David, thank you so much. Interesting to learn about the west napa fault. Yeah. We are always learning about new faults and we have been living here a long, long time. A lot of Scientific Data for david to die jest. We want to mention a lead has been calling us from san jose, kind enough to take the time to report they felt the earthquake, the shaking there as well. That is a big distance away from obviously American Canyon, napa and san jose. David talk about the shallow nature of the quake so the waves will reverberate out to a wider region. Supposedly no surprise there but thank you for calling. Right now we have on the phone a dear friend who used to work here, bill hanson, who is a photographer who is lucky enough to be retired. Bill, you have been driving around napa to inspect the damage. You just cant help yourself, can you . Nope, no. How are you, cheryl . Excellent. Nice to hear from you. We had quite a shakeup here, as you heard. It was very sharp and very long. It lasted a long time. It just bounced up and down and left and right. And like all the homes in my neighborhood, weve got a lot of stuff spilled off of shelves and things fallen down from the workbench in the garage and off of shelves out i went downtown. Some big panes of glass are gone and some of the old macary building have the typical its cracked and broken and spilled out into the street on some of the older buildings downtown napa. And over on third and brown street, right across from the old courthouse, the police are taping off a large area where part of the wall of a second story brick building came crashing down and crushed a car in the parking lot. So theres a lot of people on the streets. Its a weekend. There are a lot of tourists that are in the hotels up here. I notice that they have evacuated the hotels. They are bundled up with whatever they can get, blankets and whatnot. They are leaning up against cars, sitting on whatever. That was interesting to see all the hotels kind of emptied out. I understand you have some crews up here. I am kind of waiting for some right now. We will see if my neighbors can use help. I hope everybody in napa is going to be okay. There were fires in the American Canyon area. And as you told us, some downtown streets are being closed off and they are asking people to stay away from the damaged areas. We are getting tweets from people, and heres one saying a chimney in napa, probably several, have toppled from their homes. We expect more damage to be reported. Everybody is okay, right . Well, everybody is okay in my neighborhood. I mean, there was a lot of people out on the street at 3 30 this morning. It just woke everybody up, of course. We have a widespread power outage here. You know, everywhere i drove around, there was no power. Im with the silverado amateur radio society, which is ham radio operators and they cranked up immediately and are working out of a sheriffs office. They already have a command center in south napa and out of s. O. Up here. I will be tracking that more and maybe calling in later with an update. We really appreciate you taking time to do this. Back in the saddle again. Bill hanson, retired photographer from kgo. Thank you so much. Thanks, bill. A reporter is in napa with the napa county supervisor. We are seeing the buildings damaged there. Cornell. Yeah. We are getting a better look at the damage at the corner of brown and Second Street in downtown napa. He see the corner of this Historic Building is completely gone. It is brick and it tumbled when the shaking started early, early this morning. Lets bring in bill dodd. Hes a 14 year supervisor here in napa county. Phil, you have had a chance to look around. You have had a chance to assess things. Whats your reaction . I have been through a few of these and ive never seen anything like this, particularly in downtown napa. I came down to our county offices here to show up at the eos, which is Emergency Services. The county building is in total disrepair. They have moved it down to the sheriffs office. Thats where they are coordinating all the Emergency Services for the county. The eos is moved to another building because of the damage . Exactly. Thats part of the plans. When we have emergency plans in place, thats the backup. Its fully outfitted and they will do it all very well down there at the control center. Any injuries that you know of . Will, right now i just texted kerry whitney, our chief Emergency Services person for the county. No known injuries. But it is really spotty communication right now throughout the counties. We are just learning on a lot of this as we go on. You were telling me the history of the building that we are looking at right here at the corner of brown and Second Street. Tell me what you know about that. Well, unbelievable. This building was completely renovated. Im positive it had the earthquake retrofits, and all that done with this building. So here we are. You can see this just must have been it was a big one. Bill, thank you very much for your time. We will send it back to the studio. Cornell barnard, abc7 news. Thanks. Weve heard about all the difficulties in napa and there was no much damage. We have the napa fire chief on the line, darren drake. Good morning, sir. Good morning. I would like to clarify that, im division street with the napa Fire Department. Thank you, sir. Weve seen the Mobile Home Park fire. Can you talk about that and is will fire elsewhere . We are currently working the fire in north napa. That involves up to four mobile homes. It was complicated by the fact we did have a water main break and we were required to bring water in for the fire fight. I havent heard a recent update on that but our crews are extremely busy, as you can imagine. They are out there doing damage as he isments on the fly. We are getting quite a few reports obviously into our dispatch centers reporting damage throughout the community. Darren, can you talk about how they were able to copy with the water main break . Of course, you saw the report of the hydrant as a result of the water main break. How were they able to fight the fire as best they could . We are were able to use the initial aid situation. And the allied agencies, surrounding jurisdictions have large tankers and those were dispatched to the fire scene to assist to the firefight. Do you know of any other fires reported in the area . Not at the moment. We are dealing with active gas leaks that pg e is on scene at those, along with our Emergency Responders. And we do have a few of those that are very high potential. So right now we are focusing on a couple of major gas leaks in the downtown area. Wow. How about injuries . Weve seen video and pictures of some of the partial collapses to buildings. We certainly hope there arent any. Have you gotten any reports . We dont have an accurate report at this time. We arent sure how many patients, walking wounded, are going into the local hospital. Our paramedics and our personnel response paramedics are extremely busy right now. The vast majority of calls coming in are related to structural damage and fortunately not injuries. Chief, were you around during the 89 quake . I was not. I was not here in the 89 quake. We were just trying to get a little sense of context for folks. But this is a big one in your estimation. You have all hands on deck there . We certainly do. All state employees have been recalled, all Emergency Responders have been recalled. We are receiving aid from outside the county in terms of fire strike teams. The calls have gone out for assistance, and those are being met. Do you recall the quake in napa, was it five years ago, i want to say . Cheryl and i covered that one, as well. It was much smaller, around a 5. 0, if i recall. Was there any action taken after that earthquake to reinforce a lot of the masonry in downtown napa . Thats been an Ongoing Program here for many, many years in downtown napa, as with many communities in california. Seismic unreinforced masonry buildings. The upgrades are fairly substantial and many of the building in downtown napa had, in fact, been strengthened and renovated. All right. Thats good to know. Chief, i know you have a lot of work to do so we will let you go. Thank you, sir. Thank you very much. We have some pictures. You have been looking at videos. But also right now wow, weve been talking about the vallejo road damage for quite a bit and amy has gone out there. Amy, what are you seeing there . This is what crews are looking for out on the roads, cheryl. Look at the cracks here on the highway. We are on westbound 37. We are in vallejo headed to napa and we stumbled on this. This is what they are worried about where a seam has pulled apart right here on the road. Is this a threat . Has it been compromised . Thats what officials are out here trying to figure out. Steve, lets pan around and show them this. You can see they have shut down this road. This is westbound 37. On the other side you also see
