As science and Health ReporterCarolyn Johnson learned, it begins with a decision the size of a pinhole. Amy has a gum condition that threatened the health of her teeth and her smile. I also noticed recession when i look in the mirror and im brushing my teeth. The condition known as receding gums can be caused by a variety of factors, including overzealous brushing. It involves tissue grafting. It requires gum tissue to be harvested from the palate of the mouth and its stitched into place. Instead after tissue graft, shes going to lower her game line. After numbing her with an nettics, she will make two small entry points over the treatment area. There is no incisions or sutures, just two small entry points the sides of the head of a pen. That creates the entry point. She then uses specialized instruments designed to pass through the entry holes to loosen the gum tissue from the area above the tooth. After the separation she carefully pulls the gums into place. Just ike that. Its that easy. The final step involves anchoring the gums with strips of collagen, which are routinely used in bone grafting. Look at the gum. Its come all the way down. It shows the gaps inner had gum line that are covered by the repaired gum line seen afterwards. It is not always covered by insurance and can one between 500 lars and 5,000, depending on the area being treated. But correcting the gum line for her without traditional surgery was worth it. For vanity reasons, you have to say the aesthetic experience is what i am excited about, but it also saves the teeth. Carolyn johnson, abc7 news. While the procedure is relatively new, a threeyear study published last fall found it was as successful in the trial gun as traditional gum grafting.
