Teams located in key positions along the parade route. There will be surveillance monitoring everybody here. There is no significant credible threat but Law Enforcement is not takenning any chances. Well, there were several gun shows all over the country for what was billed as guns across america day and accidental shootings happened at three of them. Take a look at the scene in raleigh, North Carolina after a gun accidentally went off. Three people were hit by pellets. And indiana and ohio, accidental shootings at two shows hurt two people. No one was seriously hurt. About 200 people showed up in pacifica yesterday to support individual rights and to voice their fear president obama will take away their guns. The crowd recited the pledge of allegiance that they say showed their love of country, but not the government. And yesterday young women were invited to write letters to victims of tragedy. It was sponsored by the girls rock girls leadership sandy. They wrotelers to those from the Elementary School sandy hook shooting. One was particularly affected. I dont like it that they killed so many people and he just want to stop the violence that was happening in the schools and to keep the schools safe. And the homes. The letters will be published in a book to be sent to both groups. Well, after a threeyear absence, maverick surf competition is back. Today is the day surfers from all over the world come here to tackle the waves. A surf advisory is still in effect. That could mean some major waves. Abc7 News Reporter sergio has the details. Photographer Kevin Harrington caught some great shots of surfers out testing the waters in preparation for tomorrows mavericks competition but getting the shots was an adventure. We were going to be trashed by one of these huge waves because they were just coming way up over your head and the boat just tips over. Its scary. They were aboard john lynchs boat. He will be part of the surf patrol this year. Being so close to the waves and the brakes and feeling the power and watching these guys. Its an incredible its an incredible sport. You have to have some real guts to get out there and do what these guys are doing. The organizer of mavericks, jeff clark, was his guide. Tonight he was briefing the surfers who will be briefing what is expected to be 30foot waves. Mavericks is known for serving up some of the biggest waves in surfing. The competition should be fierce. When they do come, they come in sets of like ten waves. Its incredible to see this lineup out there. High surf report sufficient great news for mavericks, but its also a warning for everyone else. Just before sunset at Association Beach in San Francisco some pretty big waves were crashing the shore. For amateurs up and down the coast the conditions got challenging. The fire and rescue teams were called in to help six surfers. One suffered minor injuries. At Half Moon Bay, competition starts at 8 00 a. M. Noticeably absent will be kelly slater. Perhaps up to 20 feet this afternoon with strong rip currents and large breaking waves possible. We have the surface high to the east of us over novato and the flow around the high, the clockwise flow, allowing for the offshore winds once again today. So with that, a little breezy at times. That air mass is pretty cool, but we will stay dry with this ridge in place throughout the next 48 hours. But then it does begin to break down, the ridge to the east of us. It happened shortly afternoon yesterday. People scattering in panic when shots were fired at a bus stop in front of the bay fair station in san leandro. A 40yearold man was killed. A teenage girl also shot, but she is expected to be okay. Investigators shut down the station for about six hours, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. A teenage boy is under arrest, but police are still looking for at least three others. You know that bart has an extensive video camera system, as does ac transit. We will be looking at whether or not there will be any useful video. So far investigators dont have a motive in the shooting. San Francisco Police are investigating the citys second homicide of the year. A 26yearold man was shot and killed last night as he was driving near japan town. Police say the victim crashed his black mercedes into a parked car at fillmore and post streets around 5 30 p. M. He died at the hospital. Witnesses say the shooter got into a white or silver car and took off. The Lake County Sheriffs Office has released Surveillance Video of a man who is believed to have killed an employee. It happened friday night in kelseyville. The man on the tape was later seen running by a nearby field. A 1,000 reward is being offered. Investigators say a major water main break in san leandro yesterday was caused by a break in a pipe that carries water from the reservoir. Northbound lanes of foothill boulevard were shut down for about an hour last night between carolyn street and manchester road. Crews were able to shut off the water around 6 00. Details are emerging from that her hostage crisis in algeria. It ended with the algerian government launch an assault. One american was killed and two others remain unaccounted for. Today San Francisco chronicle quotes teams spokesman bob lang as saying the team does not have anything in the pipeline yet. Adding that other stadium has opened without a naming rights deal so its not considered a necessity. A naming rights deal would take a big chunk of the 1. 2 billion stadium project that is set to open in time for the 2014 season. The edge of science also involves ideas so complicated its hard to wrap your mind around them. But one Innovative Program in the bay area is trying to make Scientific Research more efficient by making parts of it simpler. Abc7 news health and science reporter Carolyn Johnson has the details. When most people see a stack of legos you see this and this guy sees Building Blocks of science. His campus used piles of them to construction their very own working lego microscope. The microscope essentially is made out of two lenses the. The first one is here. They did need to fabricate a few specialty parts in the labs 3d printer. A kind of computer easy bake oven that converts schools of snap on objects like lens holders. The results, a working device built to answer all kinds of scientific questions except the one you may be asking yourself right now, why build a microscope out of legos at all . The answer is a new program Just Launched at ucsf. Its a course designed to change the way scientists think about their work. One of the goals is to make Research Projects more practice by focusing on the end user. And having them Work Together in this idealbased way. Brainstorming ideas. It brings a new dimension to the way that science can be done. As a test case, the team was tasked with reimagining uses for cell phone microscope developed at the university of california. Its creators envisioned it as a way of diagnosing diseases in remote locations but its yet to be commercialized. They brought in consultants, famed for work on the user interfaces like the original computer mouse. They helped hone the questions to a razors edge. Who might use it and how. They thought it needed a demonstration component. A way to help students and people understand thenar workings of the microscope. Hence the home plate legos microscope project. Between now and then still remaining dry and mild with those chilly nights. This has been the 11th night of some freezing temperatures. Tag you back home looking at low to mid60s today with 64 in fremont. So numbers anywhere from five to six degrees above average. We should see those upper 50s in santa rosa. 64 there. 66 in san jose and down by the monterey bay we saw plenty of 70s yesterday.
