The countrys top law enforcer now off the case. I have recused myself. Reporter attorney general Jeff Sessions is stepping back from any investigation into russian interference in the election. The move comes after the Justice Department confirms that sessions met with the Russian Ambassador twice during the campaign but sessions says he did nothing wrong. Recusal is not an admission of any wrong doing. Reporter he said his meetings were a perfectly reasonable thing to do. The big issue is that sessions did not disclose these meetings when questioned by congress. I did not have communications with the russians and im unable to comment on it. Reporter for democrats on capitol hill, thats enough to warrant his resignation. The attorney general, the top cop in our country, lied under oath to the American People is grounds for him to resign. Reporter but even members of his own party say at the very least, sessions can no longer work the case. I do think hes going to need to recuse himself at this point. Reporter President Trump says sessions could have responded more accurately at his confirmation hearings but says he fully supports his attorney general. Reporter the president continues on to say that he had no idea about the meetings and calls the accusations a political witch hunt. We are getting breaking news into the live desk right now. Crews in new jersey tackling a major fire. This is happening right now. A huge fire in new jersey. These are live images coming in. Three buildings have already burned down. Our abc station in the area says those buildings appear to be a closed hotel but the good news is they are getting a handle on it. I want to show you a video of what it looked like just a few minutes ago. The fire has spread to nearby condominiums, at least two homes as well. It is a threealarm fire. There are several ladder trucks there and as i just showed you, crews continue to battle the flames right now. So far, no injuries. Shell refinery officials in the east bay are monitoring their systems this morning in case an odor returns. Shell says the smell was caused when an additive was offloaded at the martinez plant yesterday. Crews cleaned it up but shell said it received reports from people in the area who could still smell it hours later so theyre keeping an eye on the issue this morning. Shell says there is not a leak and theres no impact on public health. Happening today, an Alameda County sheriffs deputy killed in a tragic accident will be laid to rest. Deputy Michael Foley was hit by a prison bus in the parking lot behind the santa rita jail in dublin last week. Happened around 6 00 a. M. And deputy driving the bus says that he didnt see foley in the morning darkness. Foley died from his head injuries a day after the accident. He worked in Law Enforcement for 37 years. Law enforcement officers from across the state are expected to attend todays service. It is set to begin at 11 00 this morning at the concord pavilion. An administrator of a youth center in santa clara faces child pornography charges this morning. Police are trying to figure out if david lang victimized any children. Katie marzullo police are asking for the publics help. Reporter david lang has been charged with possession of child pornography. Its where he works that has them worried. This person, you know, we feel is in a area where, you know, he overlaps with children. Reporter lang is the chief Financial Officer at the bill Wilson Center, which specializes in helping at risk children and young families. Lang did not work directly with kids. All employees, regardless of their position, do go through a fingerprint clearance. Nothing came up on that fingerprint clearance. Reporter lang has been cfo for five years. Police say hes been associated with the center since 2004. Also, that he volunteered as an assistant scout master for a sunnyvale Boy Scout Troop in the 1970s. So far, investigators have not identified any victims in this case. But theyre asking anyone who might know anything to come forward. Its a disturbing case and again our desire to take this information public immediately was to protect the public as well as to solicit any information that anyone out there may have. In santa clara, katie marzullo, abc7 news. San franciscos Public Defenders Office is set to become just the third in the nation to start defending immigrants in danger of deportation. The city gave the green light for public defender to hire three new Immigration Attorneys and one paralegal. Now that money comes from a Budget Surplus in its department and it only pays for those salaries through june. That is hardly what adachi was asking for. He wanted four times the number of new staff than he actually received. There are about 1500 immigrants who are currently detained in the city without representation. Mayor ed lee is going to have the final word to approve these new positions. Two strangers are sharing a friendship after teaming up to save a man. This historic rescue caught on cell phone video. Witnesses say a distraught man jumped into the water at pier 23. Two Good Samaritans were wearing tshirts at the time but they could not ignore what was happening in the water. One of them happened to be a former life guard. The other one was just having lunch at pier 23. He started calling for his dad, delirious. And he started going underneath and the water going into his mouth and he really looked like he was going to go under and not come up. All of a sudden, his head kind of dropped below the water and i was i knew it was time to kind of hop in. Thank goodness for those two. Medics rushed the victim to the hospital and he is recovering. This is southbound 101 at embarcadero road and may not look like too much right now, but we had a huge mess overnight. A dump truck with the bed raised hit that overpass at full speed, clearly that driver was not aware that they had the bed up and it clipped it. You can see that damage to the overpass right now. So heres a look at caltrans workers. Theyve cleaned up most of the mess so obviously weve got the truck remove there had and theyre waiting for the Structural Engineer to come all the way from sacramento to check that out so this is going to be a longterm situation. Trains stuck at hayward station so the problem starting at fremont in that richmond direction and this is due to a switching problem so if you can get a little bit closer to san leandro, youll still be able to move in the richmond direction but anything south of hayward, youre not moving right now. The fire appears to have started in one of the apartments on that level. The building did not have to be evacuated. But again, this new video just in. In Contra Costa County, authorities are warning residents about a string of home burglaries. Three houses were hit on tuesday night in the southern Burton Valley area of lafayette where the residents were at home. These burglaries follow four others in orinda last week. Police say in all the cases, the thieves got in through an unlocked door or window. Keep your doors and windows locked, even while at ohome and install alarm systems or security cameras and report suspicious activity. Take a look at what Fremont Police found after they arrested two people suspect ofd stealing mail. Officers confiscated hundreds of pieces of mail stuffed into two pillow cases. Fremont police tweet these photos. They havent released any details about where the mail was stolen from or where they found it. They say detectives are still actively investigating that case. And two people are in custody this morning. The officer wasnt hurt. In recent months, though, dozens of drivers across the east bay have had similar scares. Abc7 News Reporter Leslie Brinkley shows us whats being done now to keep everybody safe. There are three arrests, two associated with this particular shooting, one unrelated. Im very grateful that our officer is okay. Reporter at 11 40 wednesday night, an off Duty Oakland Police officer was fired at on southbound interstate 880 at 16th avenue. His car was struck, but he was not injured. Police tried to make a traffic stop but the suspect vehicle escaped into an east oakland neighborhood. Here are the tire tracks from where the car was abandoned in this yard. It was just last saturday night that a 28yearold man was gunned down and killed on highway 4 in antioch. Last year, there were dozens of freeway shootings throughout the east bay. Chp is already investigating at least nine more incidents in 2017. Its difficult for you to investigate these freeway shootings. Very difficult, yes, because of the size and the scope and the cars that are out there, the fact that everythings in play as far as cars are moving. Reporter San Pablo Police just activated three new freeway cameras on interstate 80 as a supplement to their city surveillance. We had two shootings on the freeway and there was a lack of witnesses and a lack of witnesses that were able to recall accurately what had happened. Reporter pittsburg also put up 14 freeway cameras to catch crime in progress. The Contra Costa County d. A. s office hopes to add a vast network of wireless cameras all along interstate 80 and highway 4, a hot bed, they says, of gang violence. Uber is changing its tune when it comes to following state rules regarding selfdriving cars. Uber will apply for a state permit now to test its selfdriving vehicles on public roads. The decision comes weeks after the dmv shut down ubers Autonomous Vehicle program because it didnt have the proper permits. Uber officials claimed they didnt need them. Since then, it has brought five of its Autonomous Cars back to San Francisco. The selfdriving systems are disabled and only being used for mapping. The search for a missing child in concord ended happily just a few feet from the parents front door. Concord Police Posted this photo of the boy after he was found safe. It all started earlier in the day when the boys parents couldnt find him. They last saw him playing in the front yard so officers coordinated a search but then they found him safe hiding in some bushes in the front yard. Good ending to that story. Absolutely. Lets talk about the traffic right now. We do have an incident that is going to be a mess for some of you this morning. This is going to a mess likely well into the midday here and if youre just joining us, it happened overnight around 11 00 p. M. In palo alto. Southbound 101 at embarcadero road, were still seeing green traveling conditions approaching this, i think this is going to change as we get further into the commute, though. A dump truck that had recently dropped off its load continued on southbound 101. It still had the bed of the truck raised and it hit an overpass at full speed so weve got the truck cleared but we still have the two left lanes blocked. Theyre checking that for damage. Obviously weve got a pretty big chunk taken out of that overpass and matt keller is on the scene this morning. He is reporting that engineer is on the way from sacramento. So not even on the scene yet. We do have two lanes down and two lanes are still open. Also have an update to our commuter alert. The fremont line, weve got things moving once again but we still have a 20 minute delay. We had an earlier switching problem so all trains were stopped at hayward. High clouds and sunshine today not as warm but mild outside, periods of rain tomorrow all the way through monday and then spring warmth, some 70s are building into the back half of the accuweather 7 day forecast. Lets focus in on the weekend. A 1, light to moderate rain but a fastmoving storm that will bring us the rain but not in such buckets that we should have any flooding. Lightning is possible sunday and a snow level down to about 2500 feet. But thats also when the more showery nature and hit and miss type of showers are going to hit. 5 00 tomorrow morning, you can see showers out there for all of us with the steady rain really up in the north bay at noon and then you can see some yellows in there starting to move into the heart of the bay at 5 00. But already by 10 00, thats gone. Thats how fast that cold front is moving. Snow up in the north bay and the transition over to showers as we head towards sunday morning and into the afternoon hours. Rainfall amounts still going to be pretty impressive. Were still going to get about 1 4 to possibly 1 2 inch of rain and thats not enough to cause any flooding.
