It started early this afternoon at a house on fishburne avenue in the southern part of the city. You can see through the roof wooden rafters are charred. There is extensive damage as you can see. But the good news, no one was hurt. But you can see the roof really ripped apart by the flames. Well, today marks six months since the ghost ship warehouse fire in oakland that killed 36 people. The Alameda County District Attorney has not yet filed criminal charges. Abc7 News Reporter Melanie Woodrow is live in oakland with more on the story. Melanie . Reporter dan and alma, there was a meeting onsite that included attorneys for the owner of this building as well as the victims attorneys, some of them, and investigators that theyve hired. The owner of the building tour, inc. , wants to repair the roof for businesses to operate here, but those victims attorneys want to make sure that any evidence that is still inside the ghost ship warehouse six months after this fire is preserved. Outside the boarded up ghost ship warehouse there is an artist tribute to the 36 people who lost their lives in a fire here. Many of them were artists, too. Thats the tragedy that will never leave me. Reporter the council man recalls standing outside the ghost ship warehouse with young people realizing they lost their friends. It opened up an endless stream of questions for the city for the need to housing and accountability. We we have a cost of living crisis in oakland and we have to think about how our laws are forcing people to live under the radar in unsafe conditions. I cant tell the public we are going to hire more fire marshals and inspectors, building inspectors. Reporter the council man said it is not just fire safety. Residents have also since approached the city about mold and other unsafe living conditions. At the end of the day, it is up to the Property Owner to take care of the property. Reporter the Alameda County d. A. s office has not filed criminal charges against the Property Owner or the one who leased the building. The d. A. Office said it is still investigating. Another tribute is along lake merritt. Many families have joined civil lawsuits that name the city, pg e, ion and others. Its not over. Abc7 News Reporter jeannine de la vega talked with evacuees in belmont. Reporter a section of san juan boulevard in belmont is a mess. Thousands of gallons of water rushed down from above. Backed up from two homes below. I cant believe it was so violently coming down the hill. I looked at my wife and said get the kids in the car, were getting out of here. I called 911. Reporter at 3 45 a sixinch pipe broke. The Water District said the water line dated back to 1968 and it failed due to its age. The estimates were getting from the Water Department now is it flowed for a little over two hours at approximately a thousand gallons a minute. So, were looking at about 120,000 gallons of water. Reporter four homes were evacuated because it was unclear if they were structurally safe. City engineers spent the morning assessing the area and allowed all the families back into their homes except for one. They did advise us not to be in the house because the trees there is erosion under the trees and the trees could come down on the house as well as the structure up above us could come down, the hillside. Reporter one of the homes at the top of the hill sustained damage. The city determined the foundation underneath this driveway is not stable and the people who live here cannot park their car or use that driveway. The road has been closed for weeks after storms hammered the canyon and it sent huge rocks down into the roadway that connects highway 84 near fremont to 580 just outside Castro Valley. Constitution that would allow voters to recall a president. The only process right now is impeachment which involves both houses of congress as you know. Dr. Matsuyama miura says a recall amendment would return power to the people and would be used in what he describes as rare desperate situations. The sentiment against mr. So, im renting right now and the rent is really, really high. Reporter at times the struggle to just survive is so real. Its kind of a heavy hit. I think at the Grocery Stores or whatever, just the basic stuff the cost of living is more expensive here. That could be the problem. Reporter a new report by linked in showing fewer people are moving to the bay area. The net number of workers moving here has dropped 17 since february. Although the region still gains more workers than it loses, the study shows many are now choosing cities like seattle, portland and denver since they are cheaper to live in. The rest of the country is closer to full employment. The workers have a better option of where to move. Reporter will this have an effect on local home prices . Not so says the association of realtors. Ive had clients from texas, louisiana, idaho that have come here for job opportunities. There is the first initial shock of, oh, my gosh, you have to pay this much for so little . Reporter more people are staying in their homes longer. The overall inventory isnt as full as it needs to be for buyers to catch a break. I dont want to live in the bay area after i finish school. I think its way more expensive than it kind of should be.
