Reporter some buildings have been swamped by the river but flooded roads have been the biggest issue. Weve seen a couple bigwheeled trucks drive through submerged streets. Residents hoping to avoid that road hazard have pulled out the canoes instead. Jason robinson and his son have paddled a couple of miles in the swollen river. This is the first time hendrix has seen the river jump its banks. Hows it look out there . Good. Theres a lot of trash and a lot of propane cans floating around. Reporter whats in the water and whats under water could be a concern for days to come. And when you take a live look at that car thats under the water, you get an idea as to why its dangerous to be in floodwaters. That car has gasoline and other petroleum in there. Its all swirling around in this floodwater. Now, it will start raining again, so even if the river recedes a little bit tonight, they fully expect its going to rise again tomorrow. Its expected to crest wednesday at 6 00 p. M. Flood stage is 32 feet. The river is expected to crest at 35. 7 feet on wednesday, which is nearly four feet above flood st stage. Right now were looking at a Flood Warning for this portion of the Russian River until 6 40 until evening. On live doppler 7 there is light rain scattered across most of the bay area right now, especially in the north bay. Its a little steadier in the north bay and another storm is on the way. This will be coming in overnight and tomorrow. It ranks 2 on the storm impact scale. We expect morning showers, afternoon downpours. Winds gusting up to 45 Miles Per Hour or higher. Theres a possibility of flooding and downed trees with this storm. Heres forecast animation taking itself to 11 00 tonight. Well see light to moderate rain across the bay. By 2 00 a. M. Rain covering much of the bay area. Our concerns about rush hour conditions tomorrow, showers and wet roads during the morning rush. Downpours, windy conditions, ponding on roadways and hydroplanes possible during the evening rush. Spencer, thanks very much. All this rain can cause land and mudslides. It sure can and it happens in an instant. One of our own abc 7 news photographers in fact had a frightening close call this morning when he was hit by a major mudslide himself on highway 17 in the Santa Cruz Mountains. David louie is live near scots valley. David, hows he doing . Reporter you can see what a big job this is for the caltrans crews. They have a front loader here but quickly added an excavator. Theyre trying to get both northbound lanes reopened as quickly as possible, but its a big job. Imagine coming along this road in the dark early this morning and suddenly the slide happens. That happened to one of our abc 7 news vans. The amount of destruction can be shocking. There was no warning. The abc 7 news photographer caught just a glimpse of the landslide as he was driving northbound on highway 17. In a split second, the news van was crushed by rocks, dirt and vegetation as seen in this shot by a chp officer. Miracles happen every day. Happens to be fortunately the slide didnt completely cover the van. It covered both of the northbound lanes just as the morning commute was about to start. The Santa Cruz Mountains got pounded by sundays level 4 storm on the abc 7 news storm impact scale. The heavy rainfall saturated the soil and made it unstable. The crews kept a watchful eye for more potential slides as they worked on clearing the highway. Caltrans was able to reconfigure the southbound lanes to give them a bypass around the roadblock. The big challenge was the amount of rocks and debris to be removed. Its around 700 cubic yards, which is a lot. Theres all kinds of dynamics as far as power poles, lines, boulders and rocks. Its a variety. Caltrans is working with pg e and at t to do their best to clean this up. Reporter light rain didnt help. It added both urgency and concerns of safety as crews continue to work as quick as they could for fear that the hill might give way again. The Highway Patrol warns it could happen again to anyone. This cleanup operation is going to stretch well into the night. Caltrans will be bringing some generators and some work lights in order for these crews to continue working to try to open up these lanes. Officially, chp says it cannot forecast exactly what time these lanes will be reopening, so the temporary twolane configuration on the southbound lanes of highway 17 are going to be remaining in place for the time being. The marin county sheriff says a combination of speed, bald tires and heavy rain likely caused a crash that killed a 20yearold man overnight. Jose hernandez died when his car crashed through a guardrail and landed upside down in a fastmoving creek. The wreckage was found at 8 30 this morning. Hernandez body was found in the car, which was partially s submerged under water. We now know the name of a woman killed after a tree hit and killed her. She had been out for a walk on the canyon lakes golf course. It happened just before 11 00 in the morning. She was taken to a san ramon hospital where she died. A Fire Department spokesperson calls the instance denlcident a accident. Tons of rock and dirt fell onto highway 1s northbound lanes near sharp park about 11 15 last night. Some people had to drive south to Half Moon Bay in order to head north toward San Francisco. Others waited in traffic while caltrans cleaned up the mess this morning. The chain saws were humming at San Franciscos Golden Gate Park as crews used the break between storms to clear debris, lots of it. Abc 7 news caught up to this rec and parks crew who was chopping up several large limbs that crashed to the ground near the dutch windmill. About 20 trees were damaged in the park. In sierra, interstate 80 near donner lake is back open after mudslides closed roads around lake tahoe. All westbound lanes were closed for hours. 80 and highway 50 was back open this morning. Chains are still required in most areas. A warning for drivers not to blindly follow gps. The washoe sheriff had this picture of cars stuck on the road. Drivers following gps to get around the road closure and they got stuck. The closure of interstate 80 as well as avalanche danger forced ski resorts in the sierra to remain closed today. This is boreal, as well as squaw valley, north star and sun springs did not open. Resorts have received more than eight feet of snow since last thursday and the region could receive 4 additional feet in the coming days. Talk about being proactive. Work crews went on the offensive to prevent flooding in downtown reno. The Public Works Department positioned an excavator on top of a bridge over the Truckee River just south of interstate 80. It grabbed trees and other debris prevent it from building up in front of the span, lessening the risk of flooding. Volunteers say the historic Pioneer Cabin tree was barely alive before it came down. Strong winds and heavy rains were too much for the ancient tree. Heres what it looks like before it came down. Heres a look at live doppler 7 and right now you can see that we have light rain or light to moderate rain over most of the north bay and more widely scattered areas of light rain over the remainder of the bay area. Current temperature readings are generally in the mid50s. A little cooler at los gatos which has dropped to 48 years. In the Early Morning hours rain will have developed, some pockets to light to moderate, heavy rainfall in fact. Lows in the Morning Hours will range from upper 40s to right around 50 degrees and here comes our next storm. It ranks 2 on the storm impact scale. It will arrive during the overnight and Early Morning hours. In the Morning Hours we expect showers from the storm but downpours will persist through the afternoon and evening hours with winds gusting to 45 Miles Per Hour or higher. You can see widespread pockets of yellow there indicating moderate to heavy rainfall. There will be more moderate to heavy rain around noon or so, mainly in the north bay. That will spread into the south bay and east bay by afternoon and evening hours. So the evening commute will be a very wet and messy one. Well see the storm reintensify around 8 00 tomorrow night before beginning to weaken by 11 00 tomorrow night. Potential rainfall total up to 2. 5 inches in the north bay, up to half an inch in the wettest spots in the south bay and up to an inch in the central part of the bay area and inland east bay. We have a Flash Flood Watch for virtually all of the area except in the inland east bay. We have a wind advisory in effect for most of the lowlying areas of the bay area with gusts up to 45 Miles Per Hour. There could be downed trees and power lines and a high wind warning in effect from noon tomorrow to midnight tomorrow night for the higher elevations, 1500 feet and above, where gusts could reach 60 Miles Per Hour. Lets take a look at our projected wind gusts by tomorrow afternoon. Most of the bay area will see winds gusting between 40 and 45 Miles Per Hour along with the heavy rain were expecting. A man was trapped for three hours after a tree fell on his tent. San francisco firefighters got him out.
