About 10 00 this morning, two chp officers were driving along and saw what they say is the suspect move along in here. They got out to investigate. They went up this road and thats where the trouble began. Maybe youve driven right by it, a homeless encampment. By this afternoon, abandoned. A stark contrast with this morning after a suspect stabbed a chp officer right near here. He was stabbed in the upper torso and neck. As you can imagine, a very serious, violent attack. Reporter an attack that led to Police Chasing the suspect through the neighborhood. I just think its crazy. For a homeless person to do that to chp is crazy. Reporter heres the man they arrested in handcuffs, and this left on the street, the weapon he allegedly used into attack. Its been taken into evidence. Meanwhile, a vigil for the chp officer. The officer is a sevenyear veteran. His injuries, it was a lifethreatening injury, but at this time he is stable. Reporter police took the suspect away on a gaurny. An Oakland Police vehicle collided with a pickup truck today. Both the officer and truck driver went to the hospital, but are expected to be okay. San francisco officials have postponed a project to drill a well on a hillside that forced a demolition of a multimillion dollar home. The city will drill tomorrow morning. Reporter were told the average San Francisco schoolteacher makes about 3400 a month, while the average one bedroom apartment rents for about 3600 a month. So you can see if a teacher is evicted it would be hard to find another place to live. Alison is a p. E. Teacher in San Francisco. She says her works been affected since she was forced out of her apartment in december. If i did not have to go through this eviction during the school year, then my time and my students would be much better served. But those who gathered on the steps of city hall today say anyone who works for any school in the city, public, private, parochial, janitors or educators, should not be kicked out of their home during the academic year. Theres already a similar law protecting families with children being displaced until summer break. The supervisor is behind the new legislation and says while many San Francisco tenants deserve protections, the challenge is unique for those who work at schools. San francisco cannot be a world class city without a world class education system. And to have a world class education system, you need to have educators living in the city. The executive director of the San Francisco Apartment Association says small Property Owners would like the legislation tightened. We have to make sure that the language is such that it doesnt open the door for a lot of other people to fall into the schoolteacher category that may really not need this assistance. Today, the white house convened a summit to authorize the next step in eventually rolling it out to all of us. Earthquake, light shaking expected in two seconds. When sensors detect shake waves, they send the data to alert centers which can calculate when it will reach freeways, transit systems and send a warning to you so you can take cover. The centers for Disease Control confirmed today a dallas resident contracted the zika virus through sexual contact with someone already infected. This is the first reported case of zika transmitted through sex. A team of scientists is developing a better understanding of the zika virus. The team has made its way into the zika forest in uganda, believed to have been where it originated. With transports very efficient, one person can be here today, get beaten by a mosquito and start getting sick. Zika is believed to have caused a neurological birth defect. Live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. [ sirens ] an emergency in San Francisco. Two chp officers on patrol. Suddenly confronted by a man with a knife. The subject attacked one of the officers. And this happened not far from super bowl city. Good evening. Here is a picture of the man who stabbed the officer. Hes a homeless man. This happened near essex and harrison streets. This officer is now at San Francisco General Hospital with what is described as life ht threatening injuries. Vic lee is live at that onra onramp. I understand you just learned more about the officers condition. Reporter thats right. Good news from the hospital. We just learned that the officer is out of surgery in stable condition. This is where the officer was stabbed. He was walking on this shoulder this morning, when the two officers noticed him. This is the suspect, who is accused of stabbing a chp officer this morning. Here is the knife he allegedly used. The officer was stabbed in the neck. The officer is a sevenyear veteran. His injuries right now, it was a lifethreatening injury. At this time, he is stable. Reporter the attack happened around 9 30 this morning. Two chp officers cruising by the onramp to east bound 80, saw a man walking on the roadway toward the bay bridge. They got out of their car and stopped him. This is chp captain christopher sherry. During that enforcement contact, the subject attacked one of the officers and they began to struggle. Reporter the struggle ended when the man, whom officers say appears to be homeless, stabbed one of the officers. He then ran off. The officers partner rendered first aid until an ambulance transferred him to San Francisco general. Officers shut down several blocks of
