Young folks. They dont understand that. Thats why i have him out here, so we can be involved. The protestors marched to the Oakland Coliseum as the warriors game let out. The coliseum bart station has been shut down. Well keep you updated. A bay area tradition honoring dr. King came to an end today. Part of dr. Kings legacy is his role in leading a nonviolent march from selma, alabama, to the capital in montgomery. The freedom train from san jose to San Francisco was started to honor that march. But it rolled up the peninsula for the final time today. Were live in san jose to explain why. David . Reporter 50 years ago, in 1965 is a long time ago, but history tends to come alive with events such as the freedom train which left from san jose early this morning. But there are now indications that support for that train is waning. Many were first timers and this will be their only time. After 32 years, the freedom train is history after this run. Weve been reaching out in the community. Nobody is interested. They know ticket sales have been declining steadily for seven years. Its the last train. Reporter the train holds special meaning to this threegeneration family led by sisters who were 13 and 7 living in selma when dr. King led the march to montgomery. They want the next generation to know what the civil rights leaders of the 60s achieved. They paved the path for us so we dont have to hold our head down. We dont have to step aside, go to the back door use special bathrooms. We should be able to use any bathroom and walk down any treat. Reporter this 10yearold says the train brings to life lessons her teacher has been teaching. She was teaching us about the march and black history. It sounded very like, cool and interesting for Martin Luther king to stand up for africanamericans like that. Reporter another student, grady whelen, did a report recently on dr. King. He knew about separation. They were separating people depending on their race. Was that right or wrong . That was wrong. Do you think weve made progress since those days . Yeah. Reporter this was the last freedom train operating in the u. S. And it will be missed. The struggle is not over. Things like this keep it on peoples minds and its a shame that its going away. The train is ending but thats just one small step towards our goal our destiny of freedom and unity. Reporter aboard the freedom train, abc7 news. Hundreds of people marched along san pablo avenue in el ser eat toe this morning. Many walked along with their kids along the onemile route from the dmv to the high school. Dr. Kings vision and his dream was one of peace and so we really think that we need to give this to our next generation. This is the 26th year that el sery toe has had a Martin Luther king march. The first was organized as a protest because the city would not provide a permit for that event. King tides returned to the bay area and that created some the flooding. Were joined in San Francisco with more. Reporter here at the South Bay Harbor theres a huge ruler so you can gauge how high the tides are. Today in San Francisco, the king tide this morning was almost to 8 feet which is about as far as this ruler can go. In some parts of the bay area, king tides went higher than nine feet. Its got low coverage. In oakland save the bay held a day of service at Martin Luther king jr. Regional shore line. They got more than 100 volunteers for the event. To have mlk day of service at the mlk shore line during a king tide event it was just fabulous. Reporter she says king tides help illustrate what the bay area will be experiencing in the future because of Climate Change and depleated wet lands. The king tide today represents the average daily high tide of 2015. Reporter she says wet lands act as buffer zones that soak up the rising waters. Abc7 news. Before day outside. Its nice. Lets get a check on our forecast. It is going to be warming up steadily throughout the week and by the end of the week we could be looking for record high temperatures for late january. Sunny skies across the bay area, a few thin high clouds. Fog over the Central Valley and some pay push into the bay area overnight. Mainly upper 50s, around 60 near the bay. 68 in oakland. Thats our warm spot right now. We go to our rooftop camera, under blue skies well see areas of fog developing overnight. No rain in sight for the next 7 days but maybe 8 or 9 days and we will have record warmth likely by the end of the week. Overnight look for Central Valley fog through the delta. Some fog will likely form over the bay and near the coast in some spots. Then in the Bigger Picture you see a large area of High Pressure just expanding and expanding. That will be the controlling factor in our weather over the next week bringing us the possibility of record warmth near the end of the week and through the weekend. So on we go. Long range as we count off the days up to january 27th looks like a slight chance of rain in about 8 days, perhaps by tuesday of next week. Again, its not looking like a very strong probability and it certainly doesnt look like a major rain storm but well welcome any rain we can get. Overnight areas of fog, partly cloudy partly clear skies. Low temperatures mainly in the mid 40s around the bay, low 40s inlard. Tomorrow sunny and bright, about 63 in san jose. Low 60s on the coast. V we continue to follow our breaking news in oakland where the coliseum bart station has just reopened but very, very slowly. Sky 7 was overhead as protestors shut down the bart station and also the airport connector to the Oakland Airport. Lets go live right now to abc7s laura anthony. Whats the latest . As you said it appears that things are getting back to normal here. We do see folks, passengers, up on the platform now. We did not see that or very few of them for the last halfhour. So this was a demonstration that actually started at about 11 00 a. M. This morning at the Fruitvale Bart station. We saw by the time they started marching was some time after 1 00, maybe 2,000 people. They marched from Fruitvale Bart down here to the coliseum and just in time for the folks to be exiting the warrior game. I dont know if it was a precaution or if the protestors actually actively tried to shut down the station, but the effect was the same. The gates were closed and the station was shut down for a period of time. As you can probably see right now, they are getting back to normal slowly at least trying to get some of these people to exit the basketball game out of here. Some of them were getting rather frustrated as you can imagine although they were happy that the warriors won. You can see this is going to take some time because the one gate is open and people are going in one or two at a time and we started out probably with a few hundred people waiting to get into that bart station, so this is going to be a slow process as people make their way into that station. Reporter yeah, thats correct. Im on the east side actually by the parking lot, and this gate is still shut completely. Theres a tunnel that goes underneath the Railroad Tracks in the station. This one still has the gates completely shut. People are starting to figure out if they walk around they have a better chance of getting in. Laura thanks very much. Well check back with you later on on abc7 news at 5 00. Laura anthony reporting. State senator jerry hail is calling for an investigation on the board ever trustees. Were live with that story. Unfortunately although the donor and the city have tried their very best to convey this information to the current district its falling on deaf ears. Reporter those concerned about both issues charged Board Members with trying to stifle public debate. State senator jerry hill blasted the board at last weeks meeting. Its shameful the way that they treat the community and the way they conduct business. Ive never seen that in any elected body. Reporter hill is calling for a civil grand jury investigation. Let the civil grand jury look at this issue. Let them look at whats been going on, the transparency the illegal or illegal activities that the board has been conducting. Regrettably, some of his comments were factually incorrect and somewhat inflammatory. Reporter Mark Friedman is president of the board. He wants to reassure the public that the board is listening to them. We want community input. We respect the community. We feel were all working together as a community collaboratively. Reporter regarding a grand jury investigation, friedman welcomes one. We would be very happy to work with them and we have nothing to hide. Reporter meantime, the board has scheduled meetings to resolve both the Swimming Pool and Charter School issues. Abc7 news. A lot of sports news today. The nfl confirms it is investigating whether the patriots deflated footballs that were used in their afc championship win over the Indianapolis Colts yesterday. Reports say the league seized several abnormal footballs during the game, taking a bit of air out of a normally hard and slick nfl ball could make the ball easier to throw and to catch, especially in cold and wet conditions like in foxboro last night. When it gets rainy, the balls get very soggy and heavy. Today tom brady called the allegations ridiculous. But the patriots were caught cheating back in 2007. They were fined and stripped of a draft pick for secretly video taping the new york jets defensive signals. In this case even if the balls were underinflated neither team would have an advantage.
