Two huge holes in the roof. We have a live look outside now from our sutro camera. Rain not over yet. We did have sunshine today which was nice. Spencer christian with a look at the rain totals and live doppler 7 hd. Youre right, we do have sunny breaks right now. The rain has not completely left the bay area but as you can see on live doppler 7 hd, we only have Little Pockets of scattered showers at the moment. Lets focus on this one area of concentrated rainfall in the south bay, south of san jose, moving towards coyote and over some parts of the higher terrain away from most of the more densely populated areas. We have another little area of rainfall moving onshore down in the Santa Cruz Mountains but this is again, widely scattered, seems to be winding down and the circulation has shifted. Its all moving southeastward so theres not much in the way of rainfall moving directly towards the bay area. We still have a flood advisory in effect for virtually all of the bay area, expiring between 8 45 and 9 00 tonight. Lets give you a little forecast animation so you can see whats coming our way. I will take you to Southern California first where there was very Stormy Weather overnight but that has mainly moved into Southern Nevada now so things are also calming down in Southern California. Back to the bay area, rainfall totals since wednesday very impressive, between six and seven inches up north between santa rosa and st. Helena, nearly 4 3 4 inches in san rafael, over 3 1 2 in San Francisco, nearly 4 inches in oakland. We have lots of rainfall. We have had lots of rainfall last couple of days. Our animation shows we will just have widely scattered weakening showers during the late night hours and that means some sunshine tomorrow. Larry and ama . We can all use a little sunshine. That would be nice. Abc 7 News Reporter Tiffany Wilson live in Sonoma County with a look at the flooding and cleanup from yesterdays storm. Reporter well, yesterday this parking lot im standing in looked more like a pond and the restaurants owner combatted all the water with simple spray foam and wood boards. We could have taken a boat from here to oakland and not hit one thing. Reporter he embraces an optimistic attitude towards flooding. We are in sonoma the only waterfront dining restaurant when it rains and floods. Reporter he considers this bridge an entry but its hard for matt megan to hold on to romance when he looks at the parking lot. For 30 hours, the intersection of highway 121 and broadway was closed off to motorists. Stranding his restaurant and the fire station. We evacuated the station here which is not very common. We are on high ground but when broadway went under we couldnt get in or out so we evacuated the station. Reporter the roads we opened this afternoon. Along highway 116, cars lined up as cal trans crews cleared a small mud slide. But water remained the problem in petaluma. The lingering flood turned this barn into an island. Lets hope the cows grazing on Higher Ground dont consider it home. Marin creek should snake across this field. Today, it claimed fence line to fence line. Fortunately at Leisure Lakes Mobile Home Park, life is back to normal after hours of floodinduced isolation. We ended up just hanging out and playing rummy cube and yahtzee and having a good time with friends. Reporter Leisure Lakes and the shellfish grill escaped without any damage and the owner credits his irish ingenuity and these foam spray cans. In guerneville Officials Say the danger has passed for those along the Russian River after it overflowed its banks this morning. This is a live look. Look at that rv. Its an rv park on neely road mere the river. You see so much water there. The water will drop through the evening. But many homeowners are still concerned about the high water getting way too close to their homes and businesses. Abc News Reporter nick smith has the latest from guerneville. It goes around the back of these two houses and comes right here where the bridge is. Reporter it just so happens that the right here is his front yard. The gravel parking lot has been transformed into a mini lake. Construction workers in the middle of raising his neighbors house are spending the day trying to salvage what they can, then the call to the guy who owns the house, words no homeowner wants to hear. We are flooded. We are technically flooded. Reporter it was a theme often repeated. Flooding from the main stem of the Russian River predicted to hit guerneville the hardest. Below rocket canyon highway is where drake road and the Russian River meet, literally. Flooding this intersection and turning this miniature golf course into a version of water world, complete with angry dinosaurs. These swollen banks of the Russian River are among the area officials are most concerned about. I dont freak out but i feel bad for the people who suffer like this. Reporter a voluntary Evacuation Order is in place but it wasnt enough to save jays amusement park. The annual Haunted House is now home to much more than ghouls and goblins. The rv has been swallowed. It now sits feet under water, barely visible. Behind it, the house, ruined rugs, saturated flooring and waterlogged walls. Its just so bad, you know. Its, you know, it only floods for a few hours but it really affects peoples lives. Reporter it has started to rain again and this homeowner is keeping an eye on the water levels. In 86 there was three feet of water in the second floor of his living room. Right now the water is only 12 inches from his garage. He, like everyone else here in guerneville, hope the rain stops soon and the water starts to recede. Nick smith, abc news. A big mess in berkeley where a giant live oak tree came crashing down on to a home on seventh street and channing way. Gerald wafer lives in that home and heard a loud noise before 1 00 this morning. He was surprised at what he found. The ceiling over my laundry room was starting to collapse and water was coming through. Came outside and saw the tree. We heard a sound, didnt know what it was until our neighbor knocked on the door and explained to us that it went through his roof. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. The neighbor says hes sorry to see the tree go and feels bad about what happened to his neighbors home. It was a dramatic wakeup call for People Living in union city this morning. Sky 7 hd overhead after a 90 foot eucalyptus tree crashed through their roof just inches from where they were sleeping. It fell on a Residential Care facility just before 4 30 a. M. It damaged the Main Building and two bedrooms at the back of the facility. Two residents went to the hospital just as a precaution. Everybody else went to another care facility. There is now a second large gaping hole in the roof of a san jose safeway store. Fire Officials Say theres a real chance of further collapse. In fact, firefighters wont even enter the building right now unless its absolutely necessary. Thats because the citys building inspector is still trying to determine if the building is structurally sound. We dont know what caused either collapse at this point but clearly its a dynamic situation. The walls and roof are changing their positions and thats why were keeping everybody out because its not safe to go in there right now. Some workers managed to get out of the store just minutes before the ceiling caved in yesterday. Abc 7 News Reporter Elissa Harrington talked to employees who went back to the store today and some customers. Reporter video from sky 7 hd shows a giant hole in the roof of safeway. It partially collapsed at the store on san joses east capital expressway during yesterdays powerful storm. This happened shortly before 4 00. Safeway was open and people were inside when the ceiling came crashing down. Today, employees take another look at the damage from the outside. Confused customers are turned away. I was going to get candy, too. Reporter Anthony Scott intended to make an ice cream delivery. Noticed that everything was blocked off. I was trying to figure out whats going on. Come to find out the roof fell in from the bad accident they had yesterday. Guess there wont be no ice cream for awhile. Reporter one person suffered minor injuries. Some neighboring businesses at silver creek plaza were evacuated and are still closed. This woman works at pet food express. It will be rather inconvenient when i need to go get lunch. Reporter her store is open but employees are still shaken up. It really is scary because the first thing we thought of is what if it starts trickling down the buildings and ours collapses. Apparently theres a nice wall between it. Reporter its unclear when or if this safeway will reopen. Firefighters say the hole has gotten bigger since yesterday and there is risk of collapse. Security guards continue to turn people away. I did reach out to safeway to get a comment and to find out when or if they plan to reopen and have not heard back. Elissa harrington, abc 7 news. Firing up the generators in the Diamond Heights neighborhood after a downed wire cut the electricity this morning. About 2,000 customers were left without power. The safeway and walgreens at the Diamond Heights Shopping Center had to close for several hours. A bakery stayed open but couldnt brew coffee. Customers still preferred going there to staying at home in the dark. I need a lot of light. And the light from the window, i need more than that. So the flashlight comes in handy. Seven hill veterinary hospital was also left in the dark without their xray machines or computers. The staff had to cancel their appointments today. T. s new shuttle to Oakland International today, leaving nearly three dozen passengers stranded. Also, the cleanup effort thats now under way at a flooded redwood city Mobile Home Park and the residents wondering whats next. And new at 4 30, the Korean Airlines official apologizing for her inflight temper tantrum. At 411 on friday afternoon lets check your commute at this hour. Walnut creek, interstate 680, northbound traffic is oncoming, moving decently at this hour. Of course its better if you are headed in the other direction, southbound. They are moving at the limit. Stay with us. Three teens are in the hospital after being shot near an Alternative High School in portland, oregon. This happened outside Rosemary Anderson high school which serves 190 atrisk students. Police are looking for the shooter who fled after that attack which occurred around noon. They believe this may have been gang related. All three victims, two male and one female, were conscious when taken to the hospital. Officers have since cleared the school. They say it is safe and secure now. B. A. R. T. Hit the brakes on its new line in oakland today, less than a month after it started running. B. A. R. T. Officials say a mechanical problem put the connector shuttle between Oakland International and the coliseum out of service, saying a train hit debris on the tracks this morning. That caused damage to the system that powers lights, air conditioning and doors to the cars. A second train was sent to rescue 30 stranded passenger on board. Its a letdown to our passengers that we have this great new service and its already not working. We are obviously working on it really hard, trying to get it back up in service quickly. The strength of the wind there, frightening. No word yet on any damage or injuries or whether this actually qualifies as a tornado. It qualifies as scary, if you happen to be caught up in it. Thats for sure. We just saw a lot of flooding here in the bay area. Residents at a Mobile Home Park on the peninsula spent the day pumping water out of their property. This was an agonizing process that left many of them frustrated and wondering whats next. The Mobile Home Park on Bayshore Road was evacuated yesterday. Abc 7 News Reporter chris winn with the story from redwood city. Reporter at the lamar mobile park it seemed like an Island Getaway that nobody wanted. I cant go inside my house to get all my stuff out. Reporter dozens of residents forced out of their homes. The water rising fast because of yesterdays storm. Maria has lived here for 20 years. Angry at what she says is a lack of response from the property owner. We have been working all morning, trying to take the water out. Reporter these families working together around the clock. I was really really shocked. I see the level of the water coming up and said uhoh, its time to pick up my stuff and go. Reporter this neighbor took matters into his own hands, borrowing a water pump from his place of employment. My boss is a good man. He said yeah, go ahead and take anything you want. Reporter they left multiple messages for the property owner. So did we, but he didnt return our calls. Neighbors trying to stay positive. We are working. Thats all we can do. We cant fight mother nature. Reporter a physical, yet emotional battle. Believe me, i dont have any words to say or express myself how sad i am. But its really sad. Reporter the red cross did set up a nearby shelter for the residents here. Many chose to stay with friends and family last night. Some opted to ride out the storm in their cars. Chris winn, abc 7 news. A handful of pet owners had to temporarily house their pets with the Humane Society after wednesdays rainstorm forced them into temporary shelters themselves. The Humane Society says they took in four dogs and one cat. Their owners were evacuated from two Mobile Home Parks on thursday night. They went to the red cross shelter at the college of san mateo which did not allow any pets and hopefully everybody is all back together. Nice of them to help out in that situation. Lets get to our forecast now. We saw the crazy tornadolike conditions in Southern California. Seems like they are getting the brunt of what we just went through. They got it a little later than we did yesterday evening and overnight last night. It has now swept out of Southern California as well, im happy to say. All parts of the state are looking at calmer weather today than yesterday. Heres live doppler 7 hd and things are certainly calmer here. What shower activity we have now is rather scattered, widespread and weakening, although we have Little Pockets of Rainy Weather south of san jose now moving towards morgan hill. We have some areas of moderate to heavy rainfall but again, these are isolated pockets of downpours and showers, not much is happening offshore that is moving in our direction. You can see the direction of the areas of rainfall forming offshore moving to our south and southeast. So thats good news for the bay area as we begin to dry out a little bit. We certainly could use some drying out. There has been plenty along the Russian River. At guerneville the river crested earlier about 1. 3 feet above flood stage, producing minor to moderate flooding. As the crest travels further downstream, more flooding is possible along the Russian River. Heres an interesting view looking at a colorful western sky. These are current temperature readings. 56 in San Francisco, oakland, 55. Mid 50s at redwood city, san jose, morgan hill and half moon bay. We will see showers diminishing this evening, a break saturday and much of sunday from the Rainy Weather but more rain arrives sunday night. That will continue into early next week. Heres the satellite and radar composite image. There goes the frontal system that brought our Stormy Weather yesterday as well as Stormy Weather that pounded Southern California late yesterday and last night. A break saturday and most of sunday for us, a break from the rain, that is, but then rain arrives sunday night with another storm that will produce active weather right on into early next week. Lets start the forecast animation sunday at 5 00 p. M. Notice sunday evening the rain sweeps in and then during the late night and overnight hours, becomes more widespread and intense. By 5 00 monday morning, we will be looking at widespread areas of moderate to heavy rainfall with the heaviest beginning to push right through the central part of the bay area through San Francisco on to the peninsula, over to the east bay. So looks like its going to be a stormy commute monday morning and even as the more intense weather tapers off later in the day monday, we will see widespread rainfall, mainly light to moderate, it appears now, but some of it could be locally heavy. As we project ahead for rainfall totals, by 1 00 monday afternoon we will probably be looking at early estimates indicate up to about two inches of rain in the wettest spots in the bay area. Meanwhile, tonight, we will see low temperatures dropping into the upper 30s in some inland locations in the north bay valleys. Generally low to mid 40s over the remainder of the bay area. It will be chilly. Tomorrow, a dry day with lots of sunshine but it will be a cool day with highs ranging only from mid 50s up to about 60. Heres the accuweather seven day forecast. Rain arrives again sunday night, it will be a rainy day on monday. Looks like periods of rain and showers on tuesday and wednesday, we get a couple more at least partly dry days on thursday and friday. We are in a pretty wet active rainy pattern now. We sure are. People in boston anxiously waiting to see whats inside a time capsule buried at the Massachusetts State House in 1795 by paul revere and samuel adams. Crews unearthed the capsule yesterday from the cornerstone of the building on beacon hill. Its kind of small, only about the size of a cigar box. Its possibly the oldest such u. S. Artifact ever uncovered. The Boston Museum of fine arts will xray this box over the weekend and reveal its contents next week. Some speculate it contains coins and an engraved silver plate by revere himself. Over 200 years old. Amazing. That will be fun to open that thing. Parents said yes, we had a big storm yesterday and yes, it was a good decision to close schools, but today, some parents are saying maybe schools should have reopened today since conditions were much better, but the School Districts are saying it was a matter of safety. The schools in petaluma were closed today. The signs of the storm that passed are still visible. The superintendent said he decided to close schools again today after consulting with several public agencies. Last night there were some roads that were closed in the area so with that information, we knew our businesses couldnt run to many parts of the districts so we made a determination to close schools for today. Reporter this parent said she was glad she didnt have to drive her child to school. I see it as a time for them to clean up anything that needs to be cleaned up at the schools. She goes to school in petaluma, actually, and it was very flooded. Reporter at case grande high school, soaked carpets were being removed from the band and choir room which flooded last week after the drain behind the building clogged up. Here is video. The band director found a foot of standing water. The district is confident it will not lose any state funding because of this closure. A state of emergency is not required for a waiver. We will make the case that it wasnt safe for people to come to school. Reporter just south in novato, many parents felt schools should have reopened today. Megan goes to school in petaluma so i was a little relieved because of the freeway situation, i was nervous about her driving up there in the water. For my son who goes to school here, not so much. Didnt think it should be closed. Nice to be able to keep them in school and get educated plus with both parents working, makes it kind of tough. Now you got to find either time off work or find someone to watch your kid. Reporter heres what the Novato School district told me this afternoon. They said crews spent all day cleaning debris and drains and cleaning flooded classrooms to make it safe for both students and staff. Live in novato, Lyanne Melendez, abc 7 news. In the sierra, the snow plows were hard at work. Check this out. Up to two feet of snow fell in the Higher Elevations but most ski resorts are reporting lower than expected snowfall totals. This is video from kirkwood Mountain Resort this morning. They say they got about 13 inches at their base at 7800 feet but the Upper Mountain is very skiable, like midwinter snow, they say. Southern california as we showed you getting the heavy downpour that we got yesterday. The soaking storm triggered several mud slides, flooded streets and cut power to tens of thousands of people. In camarillo springs, more than a dozen homes were severely damaged after a giant wall of mud and rocks slid down off a firescarred hillside. The debris piled as high as the rooftops. Reporter john gregory was there and talked to some homeowners. Reporter by midmorning the sun was finally shining in camarillo springs and work crews and residents had a much better idea of just how much debris had come down the hillsides overnight. I cant believe it. Its devastating. I cant believe this happened. The fires the one that really caused all this. Hopefully that wont happen again. Reporter the massive rock pile slammed right into homes. Firefighters cant believe theyre still standing. This one just brought the rock down and brought it down in a big way. When i think about the amount of force that impacted those things, pretty impressive to see them standing. Reporter to give you an idea of how much debris came down this hillside, im actually standing on the rooftop of this heavy equipment. Even though there was extensive damage to homes, amazingly there are no injuries. Many residents left before the rains hit as a precaution. I came up here 10, 15 minutes ago expecting the worst and thanks to god that it turned out to be okay. Reporter as if to add insult to injury, the sprinklers continue to wash down the hillside here. No one is really sure why. Whatever the reason, the last thing they need right now in camarillo springs is more water. Right now, ten homes have been redtagged here in camarillo springs but Authorities Say that number could change and it could go up as they get a better assessment of the damage here. John gregory for abc 7 news. Some of the pictures are mindboggling. Also in l. A. , dramatic river rescues today. Firefighters found a man clinging to a tree in echo park. They were able to pull him to safety. Moments later, they pulled another person from a tree. Officials say the second victim was the wife of the man they had previously rescued. She was found in a bush. That swiftmoving water made it really tough for the rescuers themselves. At one point a firefighter who went in had to be rescued and pulled to safety because the river was pushing him down the stream. That is just awful. Rough seas, high tide and high winds have taken their toll along the washington coastline. This Vacation Home tumbled into the pacific yesterday in north cove, southwest of seattle. A few weeks back, the home wa s blocks from the beach. Its the third home to fall into the ocean this week. This one was miles from the ocean ten years ago. Its going on for quite some time but has been extremely aggressive this year. I think this is just mother nature. I think this was all ocean at one time, all sand and its just reclaiming itself. I think the currents are doing what they do. Several other homes are ready to go at any moment. The houses are a loss for the homeowners. They will get no help from Insurance Companies or the government. A Korean Airlines official apologized and has resigned for an inflight incident that has been dubbed nut rage. She bowed in front of cameras today before facing transportation officials. Cho became enraged when a Flight Attendant offered her nuts in a bag instead of on a tray when she was in first class. She ordered a Senior Member of the crew off the plane and forced the plane to return to the gate because of this. Cho is the daughter of the airlines chairman. The female pup was sent to the Shedd Aquarium in chicago for special care. The latest milestone . She can use her flippers to play and propel her around her nursery pool. She was one of the tiniest otters ever rescued by the Monterey Bay Aquarium team. So cute. We should watch her play for awhile. Buying a house no longer just an emotional roller coaster. It can be a real one as well. A Dutch Real Estate Agency installed an actual roller coaster through the inside and outside of a home on the market. I like that. We have widely scattered showers across the bay area right now. Most of the bay area is dry, as a matter of fact. Our weather pattern is relatively calm. In the area of morgan hill, a powerful cell producing some downpours there is now moving out into the hill country and away from populated areas. Still have active weather developing offshore but its aiming towards monterey bay and to the south and southeast. So the bay area is calming down. Take a look at snowpack over in the sierra. Statewise we are at 40 of normal. We are only at 31 this time last year and in the central sierra, 38 . Far below the average snowpack level. With a few more storms we are looking to improve. Tomorrow, it will be a mainly dry and relatively cool day with high temperatures in the 50s in sacramento, monterey, 48. Yosemite, 40. Tahoe, 64. Here in the bay area, we will see partly cloudy to mainly sunny skies. It will be dry with high temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 50s. A dry day. Can you believe that . Nice. Take advantage. Their ordeal began 10 30 wednesday night pacific time when flight 863 took off from San Francisco. Then 19 hours into the flight, the pilot announces they have been diverted because of debris on the runway in sydney. It would turn out to be a layover from hell. The plane, unable to take off, because the pilot exceeded his flying hour limit. Unfortunately, by the time they got back and sat on the ramp for awhile, they exceeded the crew day. Reporter frustrated flyers reportedly spending several more hours in their seats before the crew allowed them to get off and get some fresh air. Passengers reporting the bathrooms had even run out of toilet paper and soap. United giving out snacks and drinks but it wasnt enough to calm the frayed nerves of passengers. All we want is beer and steak and well be fine. Reporter finally, eight hours after they landed, relief. A backup crew arrives. The plane finally takes off, landing in sydney nine hours behind schedule. Not much you can do about it. At least we were safe. Reporter abc news, washington. Got to try to keep that attitude. Sure, your pet can play by themselves but its favorite thing to play with is you. For dogs, games like catch or tugofwar give them exercise and satisfy their social needs. Frisbees and rope pulls are also favorites. Who can resist a brand new ball . Even an aloof cat might spend time with you if you give him the right dangling toys and he will get some exercise. When your pets are alone, they can stay occupied with a toy that delivers a treat. Balls that contain tasty bits or rubber toys with a little Peanut Butter inside but keep them clean. For cats, catnip is a classic choice. Kittens and older cats arent that interested but the middle set, watch out. For kitties, little balls with bells inside are fun. Both cats and dogs find plush animals comforting. Squeaky insides are a plus. Here are some safety cautions. If your dog is aggressive dont give him plush animals. He might swallow the stuffing. As for cats your cat is curious. Dont leave out toys with feathers, strings, ribbons, eyeballs or bells he chew off and swallow. When toys start to fall apart, toss them. This afternoon, the air space over london briefly shut down after a technical failure at one of britains two air Traffic Control centers. Lucky for travelers, the system was restored in less than an hour. For a big system like theyve got, isnt a bad backup system. Reporter five airports were affected including heathrow, the Busiest Airport in europe. Heathrow handles about 1300 flights a day, about 200 are to and from the u. S. The trouble is in lots of ways, that heathrow is oversaturated and even a fiveminute break there in communication can cause a backup. Reporter some delays were reported at london airports and in other parts of europe but there was no impact on departures from the states to the uk. British aviation officials did not request the faa to hold flights from taking off. Officials in the uk warned it would take time for operations across the nation to get back to full strength. Passengers at heathrow seemed to not realize there was even an issue and took the delays as part of the standard travel experience. Once again, we start with meteorologist drew tuma on just how much rain we have got. Its a much quieter picture right now than it was this time 24 hours ago. Live doppler 7 hd is still showing some scattered showers, widely scattered in nature. One lone downpour we had in the past hour or so. As we zoom in locally into the south bay, moved out of san jose and this heavier downpour is moving to the south and east out of the bay area. Thats about the extent of the heaviest rain we have right now. The entire region still under flood advisory over the next couple of hours for any downpours we see develop, could cause additional ponding on the roadway. Impressive rainfall since yesterday. I should say wednesday evening. Anywhere from four inches in oakland to over six inches in santa rosa. As we time out the rest of your friday evening, a few scattered showers by 8 00 p. M. But all this activity really winds down as we head into the early hours of saturday.
