[ female announcer ] and now, try our new chocolate chip cookie 90 calorie brownie. >> witnesses describe a surreal scene of terror, panic and blood. >> i was struck here first. >> the gunman calmly, methodically shooting 70 people, and nearby a deadly trap set at the suspect's apartment. >> i have seen a lot of wires, trip wires, jars full of ammunition. >> we have live team coverage of the tragedy in colorado tonight. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm carolyn johnson. we begin where it all started, in aurora, colorado. it is a suburb of denver about the size of oakland. >> that's where ama dates is live. ama? >> dan and carolyn, i want to set the scene for you. i am in a parking lot near the entrance to the mall area. you can see the movie theater all lit up. lots of cars. in fact, if it weren't for the crime scene tape you would think there is another midmight movie showing. sadly, that's not the case. when we arrived, all the entrance tots mall were blocked off, an you will too eerie reminder of what happened here. they scattered out on their own, or they were carried away, blood streaming from bullet wounds. others were left for dead. inside a horror scene of carnage that started during a midnight screening during the new batman movie. police believe james-old james holmes calmly watched the movie along with everybody else, and then he got up and used his cell phone and went hid gear up with a bulletproof vest, a ballistic helmet, gas mask, tactile gloves and gear to cover his throat and legs. holmes went to the front of the theater and hurled two green canisters. >> i saw plumes of smoke. >> reporter: i spoke with emma who was in the theater. she stayed on scene for hours. she tells me thought i she thout had to be a prapg. >> he was such a nightmarish figure it couldn't have been real. >> then my worst nightmare happened. a guy in the corner had a semiautomatic weapon in his hand. you could see the explosions that were coming from the gun, the shotgun or whatever against the smoke background. >> one victim, a mother was hit in the leg. jay i remember thinking i am not going to die in here. me and my kids are not going to die in here. >> it was chaos. >> he marched up and down the aisle using an arsonal, an assault gun and rifle and two blocks. he shot moments later to reload. police caught him in the parking lot. but police are not over. police are using robots to try to get into the suspect's apartment. he warned police it was booby-trapped and it is. there are trip wires and flammable liquids. >> it is a vexing problem how to enter the apartment safely. i personally have never seen anything like what the pictures show us is in there. >> amidst the shock and grief as survivors tell their stories, a coroner has identified the vic i'm its' bodies and their relatives are being notified. and of course we don't know all of the names of the 12 people who died. they are still trying to reach the families of the people. just behind me here people have set up a memorial. there are candles down there. people in the community coming down to pay their respects. just behind the memorial. the 58 people who were injured had easy access to medical care right across the street. this community you can already see how strong they are. i just saw a woman and presumably her daughter walk up to the officers who were blocking off this entrance and handed them bottles of water. >> let me ask you about the cars behind you. a number of cars you said it is almost as if a movie is playing. when can people get back in and remove their cars? >> you know, i just spoke to an officer, and apparently some people were able to get their cars earlier as long as they could verify that it was in fact their car. i am told tomorrow morning people will likely get to go in and take their cars. >> ama thanks very much. ama dates reporting live from aurora, colorado. thank you for that report. she will be there over the weekend. it is still not over. police are using robots to get into james holmes' apartment. he warned officers it is booby-trapped, and he was not lying. they used a 12-foot pole to put a camera in the apartment and they found trip wires and flammable liquids inside. they are trying to determine what the flammable liquids are. they hope to get in tomorrow. police say he set the trap to try to kill more lives because he expected to be killed at the theater. he is the grandson of a decorated military veteran who taught at the prestigious york school in monterey, and his uncle lives in caramel. the defense department says holmes is not a past or current member of any branch of the armed forces. james holmes grew up in san diego in the upper middle class community of rancho penasquitos. he played junior varsity soccer and graduated from high school there and then from uc riverside with a degree in neuro science. >> he was in neuro science. he was at the top of the top. he really distinguished himself from an academic point of vaw graduating with highest honors. >> it was a different james holmes who showed up at this san diego pawnshop the last few months asking about tips about firing a gun. >> i immediately recognized him when i saw his picture. my first words out of my mouth is oh my god he looks familiar. >> i can't understand what turns a young man in this case from being a good student and growing up in a good neighborhood, and then going off to school and what happened? i don't know. >> when he couldn't find a job after graduating from uc riverside, his mother encouraged him to pursue a graduate degree at the university of colorado, but he was in the process of withdrawing from the phd program. when his mother was contacted this morning she did not seem surprised that something terrible had happened. she told abc news "you've got the right person. i've got to call police." today his father robert left the family home in san diego under police protection to fly to colorado. his family issued a statement tonight through a spokesperson saying "our hearts go out to all the victims and their families." one of the people wont wounded at the theater was making a pitstop on his way to the bay area. steven barton was riding his bike from connecticut to san francisco when he stopped in aurora to visit friends. he was hit in the neck, arms and chest by chrapnal. >> it felt surreal. even watching the news reports, it is like trying to plant myself back into that moment, it is still very strange, a very strange feeling. >> he expects to be out of the hospital in a few days, but he is not sure when he will be able to continue his ride to san francisco. and we are learning the identities of more victims. alex sullivan's family confirms he was one of the 12 killed in the theater. he turned 27 today and was set to celebrate his first wedding anniversary on sunday. he was from the aurora, denver area. >> so was 23-year-old makayla medic whose family has told the associated press she was among those killed. in a recent university of the pacific graduate in stockton was wounded. petra anderson graduated from uop's conservatory of music in may. she was shot multiple times, but she is recovering. the university prohost has been in contact with her family. >> a campus community knew her well. she was a scholarship recipient. we are truly sadenned by what happened to her. >> in a twist of fate, almost too hard to believe 24-year-old jessica gawhy narrowly escaped a shooting in toronto only to be shot tonight. she went by jessica red field professionally. if you would like to honor the victims of the masacre we posted a badge in honor of the first victim identified. that is jessica. you can share this badge from our facebook page. we will be sharing more memories as information becomes available about the other 11. this horrifying tragedy in colorado has prompted a response. amc theaters released this statement saying "we will not permit face covering masks or fake weapons inside our buildings. a lot of people dress up apparently to go and see the batman movie. sergio is live tonight. sergio? >> we did see a couple of people dressed up to watch a couple showings here tonight. san mateo police tell me they actually have a couple of police officers on foot patrol here in the downtown area every friday night. because of the tragedy in colorado they added officers to that foot patrol, and i have also seen plenty of officers in their police cruisers patrolling the streets as well. the 8:15 showing was sold out and standing next to the line of people waiting to get into the theater was san mateo police in full uniform. >> way want the officers out there to show their presence and let them know feel safe. >> fans did say they thought twice about coming, but decided not to let the tragedy in colorado scare them off. >> a little nervous about it. things happen. you can't hide and stay home, right? you have to go and enjoy your time and your weekend. >> columbine, a couple of kids went nuts. one guy goes crazy, that's not the world i want to live in, and it is not the world i want to have to adjust to. >> and the people in line for this soldout showing of the new batman movie are not the only ones undeterred. there are a couple of soldout showings at this theater tonight, and other theaters showing "the dark knight rises" have been reporting soldout shows throughout the day. i talked with one couple who is here to watch the movie again. they were at a midnight show in san francisco last night. >> we got in our car and right away we heard the news. we freaked out because we had just come out of the movie. we were so excited when we heard that. we had been to that theater before. we used to live there. >> they worry about friends in colorado, but they decided they liked the movie so much they wanted to come again. they are trying to put the tragedy in perspective. >> this doesn't happen every day. i hope as a country we don't overreact and have a police presence every time there is a movie or prevent midnight showings or prevent people from wearing costumes. >> all of the bay area police officers say they don't have any reason to believe that there will be any kind of repeat attack. again they say they just wanted to have an extra police presence to ease the minds of the theater going publicment abc7 news. >> thank you, sergio. president obama made his first public comments on the theater shooting. it was supposed to be a campaign rally in fort meyers, florida. he limited the appearance and kept his remarks to the tragedy. the president ordered flags be flown at half staff over the white house and all public buildings and grounds. he also canceled his campaign appearances for the day. abc news will have continuing coverage throughout the colorado theater masacre. we will have the latest developments on-line at abc7news.com. you can get breaking news updates on twitter at abc7 news bay area and on our facebook page, facebook.com/abc news. our coverage continues tomorrow morning with abc7 news beginning at 5:00. we are going to move on here. coming up next, a white powder alert. four bay area police stations receive letters with a suspicious powder inside. hazmat teams respond, and we will explain what they found. >> and back together again. the judge's ruling. >> and then coming up onñ!ñcús some other news tonight, the fbi is investigating the discovery of white powder found today in envelopes delivered by mail to police headquarters in hayward, san leandro, berkeley and union city. union city is where abc7 news reporter thomas roman is live with the latest on this story. thomas? >> dan, police say these envelopes containing the white powder were ordinary, ordinary until one hayward police employee opened one and then triggered emergency procedures in four bay area cities including here in union city. the discovery of the envelopes containing the white powder began at the hayward police department at 9:45 this morning. alameda county fire department hazmat teams were called out and there was a partial evacuation as investigators checked the contents. a clerk opening mail discovered an envelope with white powder and called the alert. it turned out to be flour. union city police commander found a similar envelope after getting a heads up from the alameda county fire chief. >> i was able to call the fare department, and then at that point we just had the fire department come and take a look at it. the letter was still sealed. >> the fbi has the letter. union city city hall is dark due to budget cuts sorkts mail was in a box where the commander could remove it. a half hour earlier a san leandro employee opened an envelope containing white powder. after hazmat response and a partial evacuation, the powder here was also determined to be flour. at 2:17 the berkeley police department was also partially evacuated after a clerk opened an envelope and white powder spilled out. >> we evacuated the area and the lower floors. public safety building. we had other parts of the building shelter in place. we turned off our heating and ventilation and air conditioning units to the building. >> berkeley deputy fire chief says the powder was vegetable based. none of the envelopes con intayed any other information. contained any other information. >> was it just addressed to the police department? >> just addressed to the police department. no return address or any of that stuff. >> an alert was sent to all bay area police departments including a photograph of the envelope. now police also say there was a post mark on the envelopes, but they are not sharing that information. the case has been turned over to the fbi and postal investigators. thomas roman, abc7 news. >> thank you, thomas. suspended sheriff ross mercurimi and his wife have reunited. eliana lopez crossed her fingers when she walked into the halve justice and he was close behind. he told the judge she and her son theo feel safe so there is no need for the seven month stay away order. the judge agreed and lifted it. >> they don't want to hug. they want to kiss. >> it is the best. >> he may still lose his job as sheriff. he was suspended after pleading guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence charge. he is fighting before the ethics commission to get reinstated. >> on to the weekend weather forecast. >> sandhya patel is here with that. >> carolyn and dan, try near triple digit heat inland. here is a look at live doppler 7hd. the skies are clear, but we have a few patches of fog that has formed basically near the coastline. temperatures right now are downright warm. inland communities like concord 73 degrees and 78 in antioch. it is 70 right now in fairfield and livermore. these are really warm readings. 60s across most of the rest of the bay area with the exception of the coast where we have 50s. half moon bay reporting patchy fog. these temperatures are running in i where from 2 to 15 degrees warmer. patchy fog at the coast. hot inland this weekend, and much cooler weekend is coming next tuesday and wednesday. shear what is going to bring -- here is what is going to bring us the heat. it is a hot air mass shifting westward, and we already saw the numbers rise today. numbers from the low 60s to the mid90 for your high temperatures. tomorrow you will see the temperatures come up even more with close to 100 degrees in the inland valleys. only patches of fog by morning. temperatures in the 50s to the mid60s. a pretty mild start to your saturday morning. and then watch what happens to the fog. it is limited in coverage. it burns off quickly, and the temperatures will come up on -- come up. 60s, a mild day along the coastline. certainly getting toasty in our inland areas. 90s there. 98 in antioch. livermore same thing. 92 vallejo and santa rosa and up toward ukiah and clear lake and cloverdale, mid-nineties. san francisco you are coming up to 74 degrees. you were in the mid60s today. a pretty significant upward trend. 80 oakland, 84 fremont. 86 degrees, san jose 88, and in half moon bay, 67 degrees. around the monterey bay, it is going to be summer like. 95 in gilroy and 82 in santa cruz. hot inland for a couple of days. although it is a little cooler on sunday as the sea breeze kicks in sooner. temperatures in the 60s. we will actually hold the heat for monday, and then you will notice considerably cooler weather as we head into your tuesday and wednesday. wednesday in the mid80s inland and upper 50s coast side. we will go from well above normal this time of year carolyn and dan as we head into the weekend to below average by next week. >> it is becoming a familiar pattern. >> absolutely.
