To have two in one year that are like this is just its something i cant even fathom. A massive fire in the same spot not once but twice. And hours after this fireball in the east bay crews remain at the scene tonight as an unstable crane has residents on edge. Its scary. First of all, we dont know what to expect, what every day, you know, will bring. Good evening. Im eric thomas. Crews are working right now at the scene of that massive fire in emeryville. The fire starte around 5 00 this morning at a construction site that has now burned twice in one year. 18 hours later the fire is still smoldering in some spots, and theres also an unstable crane in the middle of the burn area. Abc 7 News Reporter lisa aminute galician joins us live from the scene at adeline street. Whats happening now, lisa . Reporter eric, this situation is still very unstable. The heavy equipment arrived a short time ago and we were forced to move back to this area in case that crane falls. The man is to dismantle it and have it slowly move south in a controlled fall. You can see the street sign, adeline street. Behind it is a vacant lot and the hope is the crane will land there. Its a painstaking process that requires extreme precision. If this crane collapses it would come crashing down on nearby apartments. The crane has suffered catastrophic failure with being exposed to the heat of the fire. So the instability of it means that it could actually fall at any time. Police force, residents, and more than a dozen apartments to evacuate. Theres not much i can do about it except get my stuff and get out of here as soon as i can. This comes after a terrifying morning. This is the second time in ten months that a huge fire erupted at the construction site of this condo complex. Both times fire engulfed everything in its path. Embers traveled all over. Two blocks away they lachbded on this house where the roof caught on fire. The fire knocked out power to 400 homes and businesses. At avalon Senior Housing many elderly residents feel unsafe in the dark. Its really getting to us. We cant sleep at night. Reporter losing out on todays mothers day business is a huge hit. No internet service, no phone service, no electricity, no power for our refrigeration. We lost all of our flowers that came in yesterday because they were in the refrigerator. Reporter but the one with the most longterm loss is likely this man. Hes the complex developer. Julys fire already set the project back nine months. And now for another fire to happen again in the same place makes rick holiday sure of two things. These fires were intentionally set. And he will finish this project. Whoevers doing this is not going to stop us from building housing. We had two armed guards and 12 cameras. Reporter and the hope is that the cameras caught whatever happened here this morning. Meantime, i did speak with mr. Holiday and he says the plan is to set aside a lot of the units as Affordable Housing for nurses and new doctors at area hospitals. Live in emeryville tonight, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. Lisa, thank you. A man who worked on the condo construction cried when he saw the flames. Thats the second time they bring it down. Last year this time in july. 4th of july they burn it down. They did it again. Matt told us he thought of all of his friends who are now out of work and their families. While its not clear at this point if the developer will rebuild, heres what theyre expected to look like in renderings on the developers website. The project is called the intersection and was designed to include 105 apartments and 25,000 square feet of commercial space. Holiday development previously said the building would be a, quote, dynamic space for creative proors to work and network. Its also on the site of the historic mas building. We first notified people about the fire this morning with a push alert. For news anytime download the free abc 7 news app and enable push alerts for instant notifications. More developing news now, a concord street is open, and once again tonight following a police chase that ended in a deadly crash. And there are questions tonight about why officers from the neighboring city of clayton were pursuing the car. Abc 7 News Reporter Lonnie Rivera is at the police headquarters. Lonnie . Yes, eric. And Clayton Police just answered one of those questions. They tell me the jeep was actually stolen. There were two women inside of that jeep. One of them, the driver survived. The passenger did not. But still a lot of questions remain about how this even began as a Police Pursuit and ended in a very violent fatal crash. Actually shook the whole crash, rattled everything, and i had no idea what it was, looked out the window, saw the smoke. Reporter neighbors along myrtle drive in concord heard a crash, then sirens. Then they saw Clayton Police and fire securing the scene around this unrecognizable white vehicle. We heard a large loud like bang and then came around the corner and happened to see the car all tore up. Reporter the wrecked white jeep still had branches on it from smashing into a tree before landing in front of this montessori school. Inside you could see it appears to be stuffed with suitcases, clothes and other personal belongings. Many residents waited to see if the driver and any passenger survived. I saw them carrying one of the bodies away on a stretcher. I think she was alive at the time and then the other one i saw got pulled out, she was she had passed away. Reporter plooets police spent several hours gathering evidence from the scene. Witnesses saw a Clayton Police car chasing the white vehicle, which had no tags. They say the car was traveling well aboston speed limit. It struck a wall, went airborne, hit this tree, then landed in the driveway of the school. Just to give you an idea of the impact of this crash, one of these cinder blocks went flying into the yard next door. I believe this to be the cinder block that flew from all the way about 50 yards away and flew and shook the house when i was inside. Reporter looking at the wreckage he could only wonder what if. Its a saturday. So no kids over there, thank the lord. Reporter in clayton Lonnie Rivera, abc 7 news.
