We remain on storm watch tonight after a weekend washout filled with heavy rain and high winds. The new threat tonight, flooding. Rivers, creeks, and streams across the region are as full as theyve been in a long time. And this was a common sight today. Downed trees as high winds swept through the bay area. We have Team Coverage tonight from the north bay to the peninsula to the south bay. But lets begin with meteorologist drew tuma whos tracking live doppler 7. Ama and eric it was just a wet morning today and even tonight were still tracking scattered showers. We are not through with this storm. Live doppler 7 showing you as you go down to street level well get you right into the north bay with scattered light showers. Those light greens on your screen. And to the south we go really along the peninsula just a lot of clouds and isolated shower and thats about it. But we still have residual effects from this mornings heavy rain. A Flood Warning still in effect through tomorrow morning early for morgan hill down to gilroy. We do want you to use caution especially for the monday morning commute. Theres an isolated shower chance. We have a lot of standing water on our roadways and still we can have debris like tree limbs on our roadways. Take caution as you go out to work and school tomorrow. A Flood Warning in effect for the napa river as well as the Russian River in guerneville. Flood stage about 32 feet for the Russian River in guerneville. It will crest tomorrow at noon at 37 feet. So we do expect moderate flooding there. We are not done with the storms. Look at this. Another one is lining up on tuesday. This ranks a 2 on the storm impact scale. We are going to track more downpours and that wind is going to turn gust can i once again. 20 to 40 Miles Per Hour. We go hour by hour, walk you through the next 48 hours and talk about the storm headed your way in the accuweather forecast. Breaking news. Highway 101 is shut down in both directions tonight near gilroy because of flooding from the storm. Abc 7 News Reporter lilian kim is live in gilroy with more. Lillian, not the time to be driving on the roads. Reporter ama and eric, this is where 101 is closed southbound. Theres just too much water thats accumulated. So much so that emergency crews are conducting a car and house rescue on and along the highway. Highway 101 in gilroy is closed southbound at 10th street. Northbound is closed at the highway 25 connection. Water from uvas creek is to blame for the closure. Whereas farther north at the guevara home in san Martin Family members brought in sand bags to keep the flood water fre entering their house. Its already crept into the garage. It was unexpected. Well, we heard it on the news. We had a few warnings on our phone but we didnt think it would get this bad. Turns out it got worse than what we expected. Reporter roads have transformed into rivers. This is what it looked like on yagas avenue. Salvador naranjo lives around the corner and he too is hoping watt grert week doesnt go beyond his garage. My concern is that it might keep rising as water coming down from the hills it will keep flooding just all the creeks. Reporter a steady stream of people made their way to the sandb sandbag station on old monterey road hill. Most for their own use but these guys gathered them for their neighbors. Its a little heavy but were all in construction so its something were used to. This is just another day in the office. Reporter as for 101 no word on when it will reopen. Not only do crews have to finish those rescues but the water has to recede for the cars to be able to drive through safely. Live in gilroy lilian kim, abc 7 news. Lillian, thank you. In Sonoma County the Sheriffs Department posted pictures of deputies rescuing someone near the Russian River. The river was expected to reach flood stage about an hour ago. 3,000 people around monterey and guerneville have been told to evacuate their homes. Michael rani showed video from the Memorial Bridge in heelsburg. The river is expected to overflow its banks sometime tomorrow morning and remain above flood stage till tuesday. The storm hit napa county hard, flooded vineyards, overflowing rivers and overnight road closures are just a few of the problems were seeing tonight. Abc 7 News ReporterMelissa Harrington is live from the promenade downtown. This is the worst flooding napa county has seen in years. Eric, amma, the riverfront promenade is closed tonight. This is why. The criver is so high. The highest we have seen it in more than ten years. Causing flooding and other Hazardous Conditions throughout the county. The napa valley took a beating in sundays storm. Roads flooded. Vineyards ended up under water and the napa river rose to its highest level since 2005. Its pretty impressive. Reporter cynthia and Billy Turnbow have lived in napa more than 30 years. They remember the last time the river crested. They say the city has done a lot of flood work since then to prevent another disaster. Oh, it was water everywhere. You know, like the downtown area flooded. So people had sandbags. But businesses got water all in them and everything. So its much better now. Reporter downtown we found sandbags stacked in doorways. The city blocked off riverside parks and paths. Ive never seen it like this. Reporter in st. Helena several inches of standing water closed deer park road at main street all the way to the silverado trail in the heart of wine country. To look like this two days into it with a week to go, this is going to be a mess. Reporter phil poppic and his female passenger could not get home to her baby. Its pretty crazy because were trying to get home. Shes got a baby out there, hasnt been fed. I gs her moms going to have to take care of it. Reporter drone video shows the swollen napa river. Heavy flooding covered lanes at the yountville crossroads. Vernon pride is just happy to see some moisture after so many years of drought. You know, i dont think its going to hurt us. Doesnt hurt the vineyards in the long run. We need the water obviously. I think its all great. Reporter it is still raining pretty hard here. And weve also seen a lot of debris on the ground. Schools in calistoga are closed tomorrow because of hazardous road conditions. Reporting live in napa, alyssa harrington, abc 7 news. Alyssa, thanks. The storm is forcing School Districts in Sonoma County to cancel classes, and heres a list of districts that will not have school tomorrow. Guerneville, monte rio, alexander valley, geyserville, forestville, harmony, and cloverdale unified school district. Were also keeping a close eye on another trouble spot in marin county. Marin county fire tweeted this video of san an sell moe creek at 7 1 2 feet earlier today. It remains below flood stage tonight. Police in the Santa Cruz Mountains were warned today they may be asked to evacuate because of the fastmoving and fastrising san lorenzo river. Volunteers with the Felton Grove Disaster Planning Committee went door to door alerting residents about the rising river. I feel like people are doing a really good job. We give them lots of warnings. The county has also used the reverse 911 system to let people know whats going on. The process so far has been a smooth one. The rivers being monitored closely but has not reached flood stage tonight. The storm is also bringing down trees across the bay area. As you can see, theyre causing some major messes tonight. Abc 7 News ReporterSergio Quintana is live in daly city with a look at some of the damage. Sergio . Reporter eric and ama, this has become a pretty familiar sight throughout the bay area. Trees toppled over. First of course the rains moisten the ground, and then the winds blew them down. Fire crews in daly city were called to cut apart a tree that came down on a box truck. No one was injured and the truck wasnt damaged. But the tree did cause a scare for some drivers. In San Francisco public works and fire crews have been answering a number of calls to dispose of trees toppled over by the winds like this one near dolores park. This afternoon on southbound i280 a driver tweeted this picture of a large tree that came down across all southbound lanes of the freeway. You can see a toyota camry under the trunk of that tree. There were actually two cars involved. The tree did not fall on the vehicle. The tree actually fell on the freeway first. And both vehicles were unable to react in time and collided into the tree. Reporter he says a woman driving one of the cars did suffer minor injuries when she collided with the tree. In San Francisco the strong winds caused a big scare when pieces of scaffolding on this building came tumbling down. It came down so quick and boom, boom. And then i got up i mean, i rolled down in my wheelchair, and i looked up. I go oh, the scaffolds come off, come on, homey, lets go. Reporter jose perez said he and his friends were sitting inside that bus shelter when strong wind gusts blew through the area. In the east bay the storm led to a few rescues and a pair of kids learned an important lesson. Also in the sierra tonight mudslides, melting snow and rising rivers. Taking a live look right now from San Francisco international airport, its been a tough day for air travelers at sfo. 312 flights were delayed today. 177 were canceled. At one point travelers saw delays as long as 4 1 2 hours. Airlines will try to reaccommodate stranded travelers tomorrow. No problems were reported at Oakland Airport or at Mineta San Jose International airport. Blackouts affected tens of thousands of pg e customers throughout the day because of stormrelated outages. Heres the here are the latest numbers. There are about 2,500 customers in the dark in San Francisco. In the north bay 5,300 are impacted. 5,600 on the peninsula. In the south bay a little more than 4,000 customers are without power. And 3,300 in the east bay. The storm led to several rescues including a taxi that drove into the estuary in oakland. Unfortunately, it was too late for the driver. Abc 7 News ReporterCornell Barnard has the story from the Oakland Hills tonight. He slipped and i kept thinking hell catch himself. Reporter a water rescue in the Oakland Hills where a group of teens tried body surfing this creek. I just saw them go down. I thought like my friends could die right now. Reporter the friends got stuck in a storm drain tunnel and were pulled out by the oakland fire department. It wasnt very cold because we had wetsuits. But it was definitely scary. Reporter peter mazor is relieved his son and friends are okay. But a lesson definitely learned. It was a scary phone call i got saying they got swept away. I wasnt sure. Reporter there was a grim outcome to this dramatic reece queue on the oakland estuary near oakland international. The driver of a taxi missing after witnesses saw the cab disappear into the water during the height of the storm. He left the airport or one chtd taxi stands and somehow lost control. Reporter a short time later rescue divers locate the car. The cab pulled from the water. One person inside. Just the driver. You know, we were able to get him out with the rescue swimmers from alameda city and oakland fire. Reporter the man inside died later at the hospital. Fellow cabbies knew him as raj. He worked as a longtime independent driver. Hes from india. We are good friend. We always know each other very well. Very good person. Reporter a tragic casualty from the storm. The full name of the victim has not been released. First responders say with more rain on the way they urge everyone to be safe around water. In oakland Cornell Barnard, abc 7 news. In the sierra a mud and snow slide forced a full closure of i80. The chp tweeted this picture of the big mess covering the freeway. The closure is in both directions. Its been Donner Summit and truckee. Highway 50 is also closed after the second mudslide of the night. The Truckee River has been flowing quickly all day. The Placer County sheriff posted video of a bridge between lake tahoe and truckee. At least six lake tahoe ski resorts closed today because of the wind and heavy rain. Yosemite valley is closed today as parts of the merced river are reaching flood stage. All roads into the valley floor are off limits. Employees have been evacuated to red cross shelters. The latest reading from the merced river shows it has reached over 11 feet. Other parts of yosemite including hetch hetchy, crane flat and wolna are open to visitors. And the storm took down the historic Pioneer Cabin tree. This is the aftermath posted on facebook by jim allday. This is what it looked like when it was standing. It was a popular spot in the state park because as you can see visitors could walk right through the hollowedout base. It stood for centuries and was also known as the drivethru tree. Continues to track some showers out there. Right to street level, pops of yellow you see on your screen just to the north of ocean avenue approaching the sunset district the richmond is scraping the marina and even the presidio right now going into tiburon. The motion of this cell live doppler 7 showing you for the past half hour or so moving from the west to the northeast. If you time out this line of heavy rain you do notice around 11 22 heavy showers moving into the richmond district. By 11 36 south San Francisco. Holding together crossing the bay into berkeley by 11 47. And just before midnight a downpour moving into benesia. East bay bay just a scattering of light showers at this hour. To the north bay where we saw some of the heaviest rain. Still a couple of downpours by yountville south of napa as well. Were not done with the rain quite yet. We are seeing the wind subside, though. The winds right now right around 20 Miles Per Hour or less. This afternoon they were gusting over 50 Miles Per Hour. So it was a very breezy day. But the wind direction tells you a lot. Its out of the southwest and that is pumping in mild air. At this hour you step outside, it feels warm. Its 60 right now in oakland. The same in san jose, 60 in san mateo and right now the north bay napa checking in with a mild 59 degrees. So tomorrow morning were going to have that mild there but youre also going to have some showers. On the storm impact scale monday its a 1. Damp roads monday morning. Some showers moving through likely in the evening. Those winds will be light, about 10 to 20 Miles Per Hour. Winds not really a factor on your monday. Future weather, 6 00 tomorrow morning. Cant rule out the threat of an isolated shower for the monday morning commute but most spots are just dealing with a lot of cloud cover first thing. Thats really the theme into the afternoon. Were unsettled throughout the day. So really anyone is fair game at least through the evening hours. By 9 00 could see a light shower move through. But its really tuesday. Thats where we want to focus our attention for our next storm system. Its a 2. A moderate storm on tuesday. Periods of rain moving throughout the day. Heavy downpours as well. And those winds once again will turn gusty. 20 to 40 Miles Per Hour. Future weather, we will get you into your tuesday hour by hour into the morning. Watch that rain become more widespread in nature. Crews are rescuing people from up to 30 homes. Meteorologist drew tuma has more on the Flash Flood Watch that was just issued. I want to take you to live doppler 7 right now. This is just to the south and east of monterey. Were going to take you to Carmel Valley right now where a levee has been breached, which is causing a flash Flood Warning to be in effect until tomorrow morning at 2 00 in the morning. About 20 to 30 homes have been inundated by this water. We do have swift water rescues under way. So there is a lot of water in this region. So we do have some issues thanks to that major storm that moved through today. We also have a Flood Warning in effect. This is where the water has inundated 101 at this time and shut it down for parts of this region. So we do have some issues if you are traveling late tonight or early tomorrow morning. The wider picture, live doppler 7, well show you we are still tracking some heavier showers out there right now. Well get you right down to street level. Look at this. Pops of red on your screen from pacifica to south San Francisco. This is very heavy rain falling at this hour. And that line even extends north into the east bay by el sobrante and el cerrito. Now for tonights headlines highway 101 is closed in both directions near guillory because of flooding from todays big storm. Emergency crews are conducting rescues in water that flooded over from uvas creek. The flooding start add round 7 30 and several cars that tried to drive through got stuck. In napa county the napa river is creeping above flood stage. Its at its highest level since 2005. The worst flooding in years shut down several roads overnight and left vin yards underwater. The rain and high winds continue to topple trees around the bay area. In daly city a tree came down onto a box truck causing a big mess but no injuries. In San Francisco the wind tore the scaffolding off a building on Market Street. No one was hurt in either one of those incidents. Yosemite valley is closed to visitors tonight and the merced river has entered a precarious flood stage. Today park employees were evacuated en masse, ordered to leave because of the potential for danger. Reporter cory james from our sister station in fresno has the latest from yosemite. Reporter a fast moving storm swept through the sierra. The heavy downpour flooded streets of mariposa and not too far from there the storm also partially washed out road 620 in mader county. The watertalls in Yosemite National park are overflowing and the merced river is almost close to capacity which could lead to a massive spillover. Despite no significant damage at Yosemite National park the gates were locked at the front entrance. Officials are still ordering nonessential park employees to stay out of the valley floor. Nearly 50 of them have left to take shelter. I think its a great thing what they did, they took care of our safety as the number one priority and got us out there have, and i seen what it looks like there. Were all just kind of in it together. Were all just playing games, watching tv, talking, playing cards, just whatever. Reporter the American Red Cross is providing the evacuees with kauts and food at tenaya lodge and a church in oakhurst. Its never easy. Theyre worried about their homes. Theyre worried about everything that theyve left. Reporter their homes left inside a park where the worst is yet to come. In oakhurst, cory james, abc 7 news. Were waiting for word on the condition of a 12yearold girl after an incredible rescue in Placer County. Sheriffs deputies saw this overturned car in a creek on highway 49 in auburn. Thats about 30 miles northeast of sacramento. The girls mother was panicked, saying her daughter was trapped in the car. Good samaritans helped deputies pull the 12yearold out. She was unresponsive but was given first aid. Theres no update on her condition yet. Road conditions will be a factor tomorrow morning. In other news tonight, disturbing new video is emerging showing fridays mass shooting at the Fort Lauderdale airport in florida. The video obtained by tmz is troubling to watch. It shows the gunman, 26yearold esteban santiago, pulling out a 9millimeter pistol and opening fire. Watch as passengers run for cover as santiago moves out of camera range. Five people were killed. Six others were wounded. Tonight questions are being asked about why santiago was able to keep his gun even after he was hospitalized for a mental evaluation after he told fbi agents he thought the government was controlling his mind. He broke no laws when he came into our office. There is currently no indication mr. Santiago was working with any other individuals when he planned and carried out yesterdays attack.
