That breaking news is in the south bay where a San Jose Police officer collides with a minivan and in the next 90 minutes the officer sadly did not survive. Im dan ashley. Im ama daetz. The officer has been identified as 34yearold Michael Catherman, a married father of two. The crash happened this afternoon on north 10th and horning street on the citys north side. Lets go to Lisa Amin Gulezian live at San Jose Police headquarters. Lisa . Dan a sad day for police and for this community. He loved his job and his family. Doctors at Regional Medical center worked hard to save him, but they couldnt. It is tragic. He put his uniform on and left to go to work and wanted to his his family when he got off and he didnt make it. The word came out slowly and painfully tonight as the San Jose Police chief eddie garcia described what happened this afternoon as officer Michael Catherman road north on 10th street and the driver of the minivan heading in the opposite direction turned left and collided with the officer. This was the pan particular call that sent Police Officers rushing to the 34yearolds side. He is bleeding bad. He is hurt, not moving. A witness grabbed his radio just moments after the crash. Passersby are trying to help and administered cpr until medics arrived. He was rushed to the Medical Center where Law Enforcement from all over the south bay came to pray and offer support. They joined the San Jose Police 11 years ago. He leaves behind a wife and two kids. In san jose, Lisa Amin Gulezian, abc7 news. The san jose mayor issued this statement tonight saying hero lift us through their sacrifice. He was that hero performing his noble duty to serve and protect until his last moments. The last San Jose Police officer to die in the line of duty was michael johnson. He was shot and killed while responding to a call about an armed man who barricaded himself in an apartment in march of last year. He was a 14year veteran of the san jose force.
