Tonight, hes roaming around in east bay city, and neighbors arent sure where hell end up next. Good evening. Robert bates is hopping from hotel so hotel in concord because authorities have been unable to find him a permanent hole. Robert bates has been convicted of multiple felonies dating back to the 1980s. And tonight hes a free man assigned to live in concord by a judge. This is a sexually violent predator whos violently had sexual intercourse with children. Concord police want everyone to know the face of robert bates. Hes just been released from custody and for now ehes being allowed to live in the city as a transient. Right now he does not have a permanent residence. That means every four to five days hes going to be cycling at a motel. Sources pointed us to a room on valley motel but bates didnt answer when we knocked on the door. A parishioner next door said it definitely makes her nervous. Being a repeat offender, being let out again, im not sure it might not happen again. Police say bates is being monitored around the clock. He always has somebody with him and he has an ankle monitor on him. Its not necessarily enough for parents we talked with at a nearby elementary school. My kids definitely dont walk on their own but there are definitely some kids who do. Its very scary. Because hes classified as transient, bates has to register with the Police Department every 30 days. Concord police are working with the city to see if they can legally have him moved elsewhere. Officers say during the course of their investigation, they learned there were more possible victims, but they arent saying how many. Garcia is facing multiple charges for lewd acts and Sexual Assault of a child. New video tonight shows intense flames racing through the attic of a rodeo home. We were over the burning home on viewpoint boulevard near california street at dinner time tonight. The fire was started by an unattended candle apparently. It took about half an hour to get the flames under control. There is too much damage for the family to stay there, over 200,000 worth. The homeowner suffered minor burns but will be okay. Sky 7 hd was also over san pablo where an amtrak train hit and killed someone. 47 passengers were on the train headed to sacramento. Then none of the passengers or crew was hurt. Police are trying to figure out why this person was on the tracks. . Kevin nelson appealed the transfer at a District Meeting tonight. He hasser worked at vhs for 27 years. This year, the district announced its plan to transfer him to a nearby Aragon High School where he will not be teaching advanced placement classes. Thousands signed an online petition to try to block his transfer. Many think nelson is being railroaded. I havent changed what im doing for the number of years ive fwn doing this. Im not sure why im being singled out. San mateo Union District superintendent released this statement saying in part, i continue to be convinced that this is the right decision. Myself and the smuhsd team wouldnt be doing this if we were not convinced about its value. Now, the district kwould not explain for nelsons transfer because it involves a personnel matter. Their bus was taken and they were buried alive. They all face this lawsuit requests requesting a jury trial to make them pay money for what they did to those kids. It was a twisted plan to get rich. They kidnapped a bus load of chdren headed home from summer school, brought them to this quarry in livermore where they had buried a moving van and forced all 26 kids then a air bus driver to climb down sealing the hatch. The ceiling started to come down and everything else. They were down there for 18 hours. Frantic parents overwhelmed the police switch board so the kidnappers couldnt get through with their 5 million ransom demand before the bus driver and kids escaped. They are south, the ordeal is over. Some have minor bruises and scratches but all are well. 40 years later, the victims are still feeling the effect. They did a number of emotional damage to all of us, including our families. Our parents, our lives are never the same after that. Ever. The kidnappers each got life sentences. Fred woods is still in prison but the schoenfeld brothers have been paroled. You have victims sitting there going how is this possible . 27 consecutive life sentences and these men are getting out free . Ray boucher represents ten of the kidnapped victims in the lawsuit for intentional and reckless infliction of emotional distress, assault, battery. He explains California Law allows the victims to sue up to ten years after the kidnappers are paroled. If they get out, then they ought to be held accountable and they ought to pay. They ought to be able to stand in front of these children, these victims and answer for what they did to them. The case is now in mediation. No dollar figure discussed at this point. The kidnappers come from wealthy peninsula families. The schoenfelds father was a long time podiatrist and woods father owned that quarry where they buried the school kids and the bus driver. The kidnappers attorney declined to be interviewed about the lawsuit and their only Public Comment was this sbrier 20 years ago. Im very sorry, deeply sorry for what ive done.
