San jose officers came to work with heavy hearts as they faced the first day without fellow officer who was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a minivan yesterday afternoon. Mike was a liked officer, hard worker. You have to come back to work. The department is supportive. They have support from other officers, too, palo alto elevator flowers. Police chief and command Staff Members from several different Law Enforcement agencies arrived here to meet with san joses command staff. We were all texting each other last night. Its really important to put on hold whatever you have going that day and be here to show our support. Reporter 34yearold katherman was 34yearold, worked for 10 years. He was traveling on his motorcycle when a minivan turned left in front of him. He crashed into it and later died at the hospital. Firefighters and Police Officers escorted his body to the million Examiners Office. Its a a very difficult thing in our profession. Its important to show support for our profession, our department and brave men and women who work every day to keep our community safe. Officers say this kindness makes a difference. Its nice to see the support from the community as well as the other officers on the department. Everybody there is to help out one another. Officers say support from the Community Means so much, too, when they see flowers brought in by residents or see people lining the streets of their procession. They say they notice and appreciate it. Developing news out of orlando where a desperate search for 2yearold boy snatched by an alligator has just turned into a recovery effort. The sheriff says there is no question the toddler is dead. The child was wading in a lake at a disney world resort last night when the gator dragged him into the water. Crews spent the morning scouring the lake using helicopters and sonar equipment. The boys father tried to wrestle the gator to free his son but the animal swam away with the child. Our ultimate goal is to try to bring some closure to the family by recovering their loved one. Now, back to the bay area for our top story. The investigation is under way into what caused a ferocious blaze that destroyed several businesses at a strip mall in san jose. I spoke with san jose fire Public Information officer. Two things could have helped stop this fire. One, sprinklers, which arent required because of how old the building in. Two, fire walls. When a fire is this big, not much can be done to stop it. Firefighters call for four alarms after whats called in just before midnight. By the end the Kahala Square Shopping Center in south san jose was in ruins. Wow, holy mackerel. Oh, my goodness. 12 of the businesses along the boulevard were destroyed by the fouralarm fire, mexican food, sar gonis lees tae kwon do, cahalan square barber shop. Not millionaires, corporations, just mom and pop. The owner of the bar, Dennis Sanchez said this huge fire started small behind dona marina. They took their time setting up their gear. Before you know, half the building is engulfed in flames. You know what i mean . All these other trucks took forever to get here. Reporter san jose spokesman said first truck came four minutes after the call and the flames had spread into the attic. Residents used garden hoses to try to keep flames away. Firefighters set up structure protection. No homes were damaged. I want to say thank you for everyone who helped. You know, were totally fine because of them.
