According to San Franciscos utility commission, on average, there are between 100 to 200 water main breaks in their system every year. This is an example of San Franciscos aging infrastructure for about 20 of the citys water pipes are 100 years old. The one behind us, 74 years old. We agree passively, proactively, we upgrade about 9 to 10 miles of pipeline a year. Thats been consistent for several years now. The problem is we dont have a crystal ball that can predict when the next water main break or leak might be. The 16 inch water pipe in question was made out of cast iron, a material the city doesnt use anymore. Today we use something used ductile iron, which is much more flexible while its durable and its much stronger than materials that were used about 100 or so years ago. As city crews continue to fill in the sinkhole, San Franciscos city attorneys claim division was also surveying the area home and Business Owners have up to six months to file a claim that the city needs to review. The worlds biggest Search Engine in federal court today. The Us Justice Department accusing google of shelling out billions of dollars each year to be the default Search Engine on apples iphones and web browser. The government says other Search Engines are essentially choked out. Google is accused basically of buying its way out of competition. It is used by some 8lion people every day, handling about 99,000 searches each second. Google is going to say weve been successful because people like us, when given the choice, people always choose google search. This case harkens back more than 25 years when the Justice Department accused microsoft of antitrust violations. A federal judge in that case ruled that microsofts placement of its Internet Explorer software in so many computers amounted to a monopoly. See, microsoft was forced to allow more competition. Announcing tuesday that hes directing some House Republican leaders to open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden , an effort traditionally done by a full house vote, though a vote is not required. This logical next step will give our committees the full power to gather all the facts and answers for the american public. For months, House Republicans have been searching for evidence of any ties linking President Biden to his sons business dealings. But have so far not been able to find hard evidence of any wrongdoing by the president. But mccarthy has signaled he might launch a biden impeachment inquiry for weeks, in part to appease gop hardliners who only need one republican member to begin proceeding to remove him as speaker. Experts say its no coincidence that one of those hardliners threatened mccarthy with removal today, mr. Speaker, you are out of compliance with the agreement that allowed you to assume this role. But not all republicans agree with the impeachment inquiry. Several gop politicians claim there simply isnt enough evidence for impeachment. Love, dad. Pfizer and moderna. Theres a third vaccine by novavax still under review. Cdc director dr. Mandy cohen must still sign off on this. And once that happens, those vaccines will be available. 48 hours later. Joining me more to continue this discussion is ucsf Infectious Disease expert dr. Monica gandhi. Doctor thanks so much for your time. So what variants will these new vaccines target, right. So theyre specifically all whats called monovalent and they are all all directed against whats called xb 1. 5. However, xb 1. 5 now is only 3 of our circulating strains. So the question is, do they cover the current circulating subvariants even though theyre directed against 1. 5 and all those experiments have been done and they do cover whats called eg5, which is the current subvariant thats the most prevalent in this country. About 21. 5 of strains. And they cover that really well. They even cover that one that people were really worried about was called ba2. 86 has lots of mutations. But this this booster covers it fine. Interesting. Okay weve seen a rise in cases recently. Are you advising people look, go get the new shot and do it as soon as you can. You know, the thing is, were always going to see covid cases increase when we get a new subvariant were going to see them increase in the winter, too, though, because the winter is when people are inside and all respiratory pathogens like the cold. Unfortunately. So im not actually saying rush out and get them. You may want to get them closer to october, which is when we represent when we recommend the flu shot, because thats when youre going to start going back inside. I will say that the people who really need to have it and this is more from the w. H. O. And not the cdc. Cdc recommended it for everyone, but most countries, including the who is recommending it for over 65. Those on immunosuppress patients and those with comorbidities. Its those three populations that i really want to focus our messaging towards to please get it this fall. I think thats an important point because for many people whove taken four shots, five shots, theres like Vaccine Hesitancy at this point, like nobody wants to go in and get another shot and you could see the numbers continue to go down and down and down with every of the uptake. Yeah, of the uptake, yeah. The bivalent booster uptake that was the last one was a 20. 5 uptake in those over 18. Its not like americans dont get it. They get it that other countries are saying, hey, were going to were going to really look at the people who are still most at risk for covid older. Those on immunosuppressants, those with multiple comorbidities. Thats what every other country, including the World Health Organizations recommending. So i would really want to focus our messaging on those populations. Please do. My parents are going to get it at then and then, otherwise its not as urgent. All right. Do you see this as we evolve . Were three years into this thing. Its obviously not going away that these vaccines, its going to be like the flu shot, that youll get one on an annual schedule and maybe it wont be that big a deal. Yes, theres no doubt that covid is whats called endemic now. And what does that mean . Well, you have to look at the mortality rate from covid relative to other viruses. That is like covid, like influenza. And we reach that similar mortality rate some while ago. Unfortunately, we cannot get rid of this virus. It doesnt have properties that make it eradicable. So once a year theres going to likely be a booster. And again, i really do think that anyone whos older and in those categories need to get that booster on a yearly basis as we learn to live with this virus. Whats your biggest concern about covid . I mean, you never know how these variants are going to adapt. And so theres the potential whether its big or small, that were going to run into something that thats going to cause some real problems. Youre right that the biggest worry is that we dont get a variant in the family that we have it in now, what are we in now . Were still in omicron, eg5, xb, xb 1. 16, all in omicron an its been the same variant for almost two years. We figured it out on 11 2621. So if we got a worse variant, thats the thing to really worry about. If its more virulent, the who has a plan for that one is wastewater surveillance. The second is genomic surveillance, sequencing it. And third is if its worse for some reason wed be able to tell because unfortunately the virulence of the disease would go up. We would recommend a booster widely for everyone and wed recommend treatments for everyone so that surveillance, ongoing surveillance, just like we do with flu, has to happen with with covid. Dr. Gandhi, its always great to get your insight. Thanks so much for your time this afternoon. Im sure well be talking again real soon. Thank you so much. All right.
