And just about an hour ago, the Oakland PoliceCommission Voted to extend the tenure of interim police chief Darren Allison until a permanent chief is chosen. They also determined the search should not exceed another six months in the search for a new chief. And holding our city leaders accountable is what we are committed to closely covering for you tonight, abc seven News Reporter suzanne ford has been following these developments all night. Shes now in the newsroom with the reaction to both of these big stories. Suzanne so, julian, so Many Community members say they are heartened by the latest findings. The report resounding finds in favor of former Oakland Police chief Lauren Armstrong. Now, tonight, his supporters want the city to consider rehiring him. Chief armstrong did nothing wrong. Tonight, Assata Olugbala wears the message. She wants everyone to hear. Bring the former Oakland Police chief back. What i want to happen is for this mans name to be cleared, a 55 page report by an independent arbitrator now exonerates chief armstrong of any wrongdoing allegation that he mishandled two incidents of misconduct within the department. The report determined that armstrongs terminated action was illegal retaliation in violation of his First Amendment rights. I think this report is a clear vindication. This decision is one that i think allows for the chief to be reinstated. And i hope the mayor does that. Many say its now up to mayor qingtao to make the next move, and they believe she should reinstate armstrong. The new chief would have a learning curve that would take some time. It would make more sense, given where we are now, to have the former chief to come back. Oakland councilman noel gallo says hes been in contact with armstrong. And my communications with them. Hes willing to be reinstated to come back. Many Community Leaders believe armstrong makes the best choice. Chief armstrong, he knows oakland. You know, he has seen many years of our experience when it comes to public safety. He was part of the cease fire, the gang, the gang injunction and dealing with many other Law Enforcement actions that we currently need today. Bishop bob jackson is with acts full Gospel Church in oakland. He believes the mayor made a mistake and she can undo it. Everybody makes mistakes. Thats why they put erasers on the back of pencils. The point of it is to say that she made a mistake and ask him to come back, maybe even apologize. As mayor shengtao released this statement today. While the law prevents me from publicly discussing the details of the report, neither my administration nor the federal court agreed with mr. Armstrong that the findings could be written off as mistakes. Oakland needs leaders, including at opd, who will stand up and make tough decisions in the name of accountability and Community Trust by immediately and prematurely standing up for himself personally. Mr. Armstrong failed to stand up for accountability at opd and tonight the Oakland Police commission talked about the new police chief search. At the next commission meeting, they will add a recommendation to reinstate the former chief or include him among the list of finalists. Meanwhile while armstrongs attorney has reached out to city officials about being reinstated, several people, including councilman gallo, say legal action could be taken against the city if the chief is not reinstated. This week, several oakland Business Owners are planning to hold a protest by keeping their shops closed for a day. Now president of the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of commerce, carl chan, made the announcement during a News Conference earlier today. We want to send a strong message to our city. Enough is enough. Thank you. Got to be done, chan says. Between 15 to 20 small Business Owners will join the strike. Its unclear if they are in chinatown or other parts of the city. He says those Business Owners also want to keep focus on the citys failure to secure millions of dollars in Crime Prevention funds. Oakland city leaders confirmed last week documents were missing from their proposal for the retail Theft Prevention grant. You look at the shake intensity map and you can see how far reaching that earthquake was. And here in the bay area, there was no exception. Tomorrow there will be a rally to demand Governor Newsom sign a bill to ban autonomous trucks out on the roads. Teamsters Union Members will be marching at Sutter Health park in sacramento starting at 10 a. M. They will show support for Assembly Bill 316, which would require a trained human operator to be in selfdriving vehicles that weigh more than 10,000 pounds. A rally was also held in los angeles today, where those Union Leaders said the bill would protect thousands of jobs that are at risk right now. The us Federal Reserve is expected to announce a decision on Interest Rates and several Economic Data point to a pause in hikes. The fed think here is very cognizant of the fact that it doesnt want to overdo it and tip the economy into recession while inflation is much lower than it was last year, its still far higher than the feds 2 target it will. Economists like Joe Brusuelas says theres still a lot more work ahead to lower inflation. He says the us economy is strong and we may not see another Interest Rate hike this year. That could mean a solid break for borrowers looking to get a new credit card or a loan to make big purchases like a car or a home. You see auto rates anywhere between 3 and 6. The average rate on a credit card is near 24 at this point. When it comes to homes, the 30 year fixed Rate Mortgage averaged 7. 18 for the week, ending september 14th. Thats up from 6. 02 a year before. But brusuelas says Mortgage Rate relief is on the way. If the fed indicates at or near its peak with rate hikes, i dont think 7 is going to be the new normal going forward. And my sense is well see in that four and one half to 5 rate going forward. However, theres also the chance that more Interest Rate hikes could be ahead this year, which could prolong the pain for borrowers. The difficulty always here is knowing when to stop and Monetary Policy higher Interest Rates takes a while to have an effect. Im jenn sullivan. Temperatures right now really comfortable in the 50s and the 60s. Heres that live view from our mount tam cam and a look at the forecast headlines. Low clouds will spread overnight. There will be some patchy drizzle, minor fluctuations in our temperatures as this week with gusty conditions in the hills and increasing fire danger between wednesday night and thursday. First thing tomorrow morning, watch out because there will be some slippery roadways due to drizzle and certainly low clouds and fog to start the day as we go into the afternoon, the clouds pull back to the coast and then rush back in across the bay. Tomorrow night, your morning temperatures will be in the 50s and the 60s. We will start out with gray skies, but you will see the sun away from the coastline. Temperatures will be in the 70s and 80s right near the coast where some clouds will hang around. Itll be breezy and there will be really just temperatures in the low 60s. Were going to fast forward now to whats going to happen. That area of low pressure thats been sitting here is going to get absorbed by an area of low pressure that is going to develop to our north. That low is going to actually bring us gusty northerly winds over the hills. And as it does, the humidity will come down and the fire danger will go up. Right now, there are no warnings. But stay tuned. In the sierra, this will result in rain and possibly a very high elevation snow.
