One Police Commissioner wants to see it happen. Abc7 News Reporter luis pena looks at what it would take to revive the program of patrol specials. Crime in San Francisco is trending up. According to the latest city police data robberies over the last 12 months are up 6 compared to the annual average over the last four years. Vehicle thefts are also up 19 compared to the yearly average. City officials are now getting creative, looking at the past to stop future crime, theyre considering something called patrol specials. A patrol special is a modified private security. So this also will free up our Police Officers to actually fight crime. San francisco commissioner Deborah Walker presented this proposal to the Police Commission this week, hoping to officially bring back a squad of this type to the city is an existing program that began back in the Gold Rush Days when we didnt have police. But its always operated sort of side at the same time as our Police Department. Currently, theres only one patrol special still active in San Francisco. He urged sfpds chief and other commissioners to revive this program. When i became patrol special in 1977, it was 450 patrol specials that was assistance and beat owners. Sfpd is about 600 officers short patrol specials would be assigned to specific blocks where businesses request their services. In the past, they have been armed and their uniform is very similar to that of an officer. So we have our ambassador program. We are looking at using police reserves and paying them. The patrol Specialist Program is Crime Prevention through presence and that is what were asking for, just having them around will give tourists. Fans of the patrol special. They saw them as competition. Were no longer in those days. Were short several hundred Police Officers, so hopefully those issues will go away. Now, we also contacted the San Francisco police union for comment and did not hear back. Theres also an issue of fairness because some neighborhoods will be able to afford patrol specials on some want. For now, the Police Commission is working with sfpd to define what the training and strategy will be moving forward in the newsroom, im luis pena, abc seven news. And for the main organizer, sarah tucker, its personal. It just it helps right . As a parent and as a queer person myself, it helps to know that our community is behind us. Martinez is now one of several smaller communities that have adopted their own pride. Instead of relying on events in larger cities. Tucker says with a rise in anti lgbtq legislation across the country this year, pride has never been more important. There are lgbtq folks every aware, and we like to see it in our communities. We want to know that our local businesses support us and our City Council Supports us. And so its important to have representation. Its important for our kids to have representation. Martinez mayor brian zorn says the event is also proudly backed by the city, with a 2,500 cultural grant in addition, it really shows our Lgbtq Community living in martinez that theyre seen and that theyre loved by their martinez neighbors. The wine harvest of grapes is off to a late start because of a cold, wet spring which delayed the ripening. And now with potential rain in the forecast, many vineyards are moving to pick some varietals quicker. But despite the weather roadblocks, many are optimistic that 2023 will be a good vintage. Abc7 News Reporter cornell bernard has more from wine country. Im really happy with the way the my crew has gone through and balanced this canopy. Its a busy week for steve letson, a fifth generation winemaker in kenwood. Im up at 3 00 in the morning getting people organized and im out in the vineyards checking fruit and stuff. Its harvest time for many white grape varieties. Most of the picking happening overnight to keep the fruit cool. We picked a day last week. Its a small block up in mountain terraces. Its just incredible. We only make 50 cases of it. Incredible wine. And so now were looking at chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. Steve says the 2023 harvest has been delayed to 2 to 3 weeks after a cool wet spring which slowed grape ripening. And now theres more weather challenges ahead. All the smoke in the air from wildfires up north. Not a huge concern to steve and his crew because the particles are so high in the atmosphere. Air but rain in the forecast. It is a different story for grapes still on the vine. Our red grapes cabrillo, all the reds that wont really bother them. That much. Thats not going to do anything but white grapes. What can happen, especially if you have tight clusters, get the tried or some mildew bunch rot and stuff like that in there. The approaching rain is accelerating. The picking of the grapes. Normally this time of year were were in the 80s and even in the 90s in mid september. So thats been a concern. Its kind of stalled the ripening process. As brooks painter from bay city winery in saint helena says, his priority is harvesting white grape varieties at the labels vineyard. Here in the anderson valley, which could see three quarters of an inch of rain in the coming days. Last thing you want is a heavy rain right at the end of harvest when were essentially ready to pick the grapes. Ive been doing this my whole life since i was a little kid, steve says. As farmers, you have to pivot with changing weather conditions. And he believes when the harvest is done, theyll be something worth toasting to. As far as the vintage quality, i think it is going to be one of the best. Just in credible. And kenwood, cornell, bernard, abc seven news. Spooky season is approaching and the Winchester Mystery House will send people back in time for an interactive halloween experience. I havent. I want to know if you have the babys costume yet. Not yet. I need some ideas. Ive seen a lot out. Very cute. Ill send them my way because im still looking for one. All right, well, you know, usually we dont see any rain before for halloween. And if we do, thats a treat. But how about in the next couple of days . Yes, a very early season. Rain headed our way. And its a strong system. It is an Atmospheric River for the pacific northwest. And theyre going to see anywhere from an inch to four inches of rain from extreme Northern California into portland and also seattle. While theres been showers. Yes saturday in san diego, we sit in between the systems and still looking at a system that is kind of lingering. The smoke anyway, lingering here. Live doppler seven right now, patchy fog. We have partly cloudy skies in concord. And heres a loop of the next couple of days that shows that were still under those hazy conditions. And then as we get into tonight, theyre still going to be that in the atmosphere at least were not really smelling it anymore. And as we go through your sunday back to blue skies as our winds will primarily be from the ocean, heres a look at the moderate air quality once again and looking for that to improve tomorrow, 52 in campbell, looking at temperatures in the upper 50s downtown. Little fog in nevada. But that 47 in napa, pretty chilly there. It is cooler by four degrees in the north bay and milder in oakland by about four degrees. Heres a look outside where we have cloudy skies downtown. Another spare the air alert today. Hazy skies, good air quality. Tomorrow, the haze lingers today and that early season rain coming in on monday. So theres a look at it queuing up here to the north and west of us. And it will continue to spend pretty much all the moisture to the north. So were on the tail end of it right here. So notice ukiah, they could pick up anywhere from three quarters of an inch to an inch and we just heard how not good that is for the grape harvest. But as we get into your monday and tuesday, looking at mainly a few showers late in the day on monday in the north bay. So rainfall amounts mainly from santa rosa to napa, maybe a couple hundredths down through novato, but about a 10th or less from santa rosa, San Francisco, the coast a couple hundredths and everybody else unfortunately in the east bay and south bay not looking at any rain. But still we welcome perhaps the chance anyway numbers today from the mid and upper 60s San Francisco and oakland looking at those partly cloudy conditions. Upper 70s inland. So you notice it is a bit cooler here and the accuweather seven day forecast for this first day of fall hazy still today. Good air quality tomorrow then here comes our chance of showers into the afternoon on monday. Still perhaps a lingering shower on tuesday. Then on the back side of that system, we get warmer with highs in the mid 80s inland. That should take us to near average mid 70s around the bay and thats what we would hope is we get closer to fleet week and our typical october weather because we certainly have not had a typical summer. Yeah, but you know, the good thing yesterday, it seems like the air cleared up yesterday from the smoke. But youre saying today it might be back. Yeah. You know, we have pockets because we get into the breeze and its all really dictated by the wind. So well see that again. Some okay parts. But i think the north bay will be a little bit worse at times. Okay good to be aware of that. Thank you so much, lisa. So bringing anywhere from 2 to 4in of rain for coastal carolina. Also up through virginia, even pennsylvania, new york and as far north as cape cod. So certainly a lot of rain here along the eastern seaboard. And we are quiet with our marine layer back this morning and certainly some of that haze as we look at your saturday morning numbers here, 54 in concord and martinez looking at some fog near vallejo and napa, 48 there. And those 40s becoming kind of a common theme here for parts of the north bay. So certainly cool in spots and looking at anywhere from 4 to 7 degrees colder in the north bay, slightly milder in oakland and hayward this morning. Look outside from our exploratorium camera spare the air again today. The hazy skies for your saturday better air quality for sunday and a chance of early season rain by monday afternoon. It holds together up through eureka, ukiah and redding and then falls apart into the bay area. So through the overnight hours, it ends into tuesday. But well see that afternoon rain on monday in the north bay, anywhere from about less than a 10th of an inch in santa rosa, a couple of hundredths. Novato you see the coast here and the hills. But look at that third of an inch in ukiah. Could be more than that up to the north but still it is awfully early for the rain and well look at really good air quality after though for the foreseeable future. Thats some good news. Temperatures will be held down today with some cloud cover around partly cloudy conditions. 65 in the city. Weve got some of the marine layer clouds, some haze out there. And then well continue to see those increasing clouds as we get towards your sunday 71 in fremont. Look for 75 in san jose, mid 70s in santa rosa, certainly shy of average. We should be up to 83 in santa rosa this time of year and 81 in san jose. So last measurable rain was june 12th in sonoma county. More to come for sure. Up in sonoma, napa, the accuweather seven day forecast hazy skies today its mild good air quality tomorrow but well see increasing clouds.
