Looking ahead now to the most significant legal case on homelessness in decades, heading to the Supreme Court next week, on monday, the court will hear arguments on whether people can be punished just for sleeping outdoors. As we follow this case for months, the town of grants pass, oregon, is suing for the right to ticket people who sleep on the street when they have no other shelter to go to appeals courts have said thats cruel and unusual punishment. Governor newsom and San Francisco mayor london breed are among the california leaders, asking the Supreme Court to give them more freedom to clear encampments. Advocates like Jennifer Friedenbach say sweeps wont solve the problem. We dont want to see cities, using police and, using criminalization and jail as a way to punish Homeless People for being homeless. The Supreme Courts decision is expected by the end of june. Its a story weve been following since the conclusion of aipac mayor london breed signed a deal during her visit to china this week to bring a pair of giant pandas to the San Francisco zoo. The pandas are expected to arrive next year, but its going to take a lot of money to host them. Abc seven News Reporter luz pena has a look at what happens next. Its official. Pandas are coming to San Francisco. What do you think about pandas coming to San Francisco . Good. Are you excited in accomplishment over a decade in the making that involved mayor london breed formally asking the chinese president on the tarmac last november, after San Francisco hosted the apec summit. And panda. Experts are from china checking the zoo this year. And now its finally happening. San francisco is absolutely thrilled to be welcoming giant pandas to the San Francisco zoo. The San Francisco zoo will receive the giant pandas as part of chinas panda diplomacy program. When the city hosted the pandas for a three month period in 1984 and 1985, the zoo had over 1 million visitors. We are so thrilled for the return of the giant panda after all these years that the San Francisco zoo and gardens, as you know, the giant panda represents and symbolizes collaboration and also bridges divides between cultural differences. The latest estimates indicate there are less than 2200 giant pandas in the world today. The organization Pandas International said. San franciscos cool weather will be ideal for the pandas. Theyre going to need an enclosure that can get, you know, out of the elements. Theyre going to need a large yard, so they can walk around and have some space. They will need some enrichment, activities. The zoos Deputy Director confirmed theyve been gearing up for the pandas return. The renovation has to take place first before they can come. Pandas in San Francisco will come with a hefty price tag. Before the pandemic, the estimated cost to build a new facility for the pandas at the zoo was estimated at 25 million. Its definitely worth the investment to bring San Francisco zoo really on the map. As a global attraction. This is a really important investment for San Francisco and an investment in our visitor economy. Regardless of age. Several san franciscans view giant pandas coming to the city as a win, good for the relationship between the countries and good for San Francisco. Are you excited to finally be able to see a panda in real life . Yeah yeah, yeah, in San Francisco. Luz pena, abc seven news. Now abc seven news insider phil matier says the pandas are part of the mayors bigger effort to change the image of San Francisco. You cant fight the image of San Francisco. You just try to create a new one. I mean, people, new york has its problems. London has its problems. But you tend to forget that because theres so much going on. So this is one step in that direction at the same time, shes getting the pandas, shes also on the phone to the ceo of macys saying, listen, we know youre leaving, but can we get you to stay longer or maybe redesign or use a smaller store there . Shes trying to keep that. Shes trying to possibly get womens soccer playing in San Francisco. Another thing is maybe get a Chinese University to locate a branch in the downtown area. In other words, making sort of good noise to keep things happening and have the public and the world aware of San Francisco in a different light. The next challenge, phil says , is raising the money needed for the enclosure, for the pandas. All right. Well, is it a weekend to get out and enjoy things like zoos and parks . Were counting on it. Its time to share some Amazing Stories and feel good. We could all use some inspiration right now, and youve come to the right place. This show is all about good food, good people, and good living. On todays show, a local creamery breaks the mold. A century of style awaits at the de young. Coffee brings acts of kindness to one community, a new way to experience uc berkeley. But first, every beer has a story at this local watering hole. Ive never been a part of something where weve had so many people rooting for us to succeed and coming in and asking how can they support us . Thanking us for being here. And im thinking, thank you for being a customer. Whether its, um, the great beer we have, the beautiful waterfront, or just the location in the bay, people are actually paying attention to vallejo. I feel like were a pillar in the community, and i feel like, you know, what were doing through beer and history and good food, theres a real goodwill to the rejuvenation of vallejo and the resurrection of the mare island concept and mare island brand that used to be a huge source of pride. Right. I mean, mare island helped win the war, and it was gone for a number of years. And i like to think in a different way, were bringing it back. We really want to do right by the history of mare island. It is our touchstone for all the branding that we do, and i think the local community really appreciates that its not kent and ryans excellent brewing adventure that were putting together here. It is excellent beer, no doubt about it. But were trying very, very hard to uphold the incredible heritage and history of mare island. We put some of that history on every can, so every one of our beers is named after some, uh, historical event. On the side is a nice little 665character blurb to get you just enough attracted to the story to then find out a little bit of more about, um, why mare island was so important to the bay area and to american history. Were kind of like a history company, and we just end up making beer to tell all this great history. [whirring] i was assistant winemaker at a winery called white rock, and thats where you make your road 31 pinot noir. I never made better wine than i did when ryan was on the job when he was there, so, we became fast friends, thought about moving the winery down here, but if you look around, theres these old historic cranes everywhere. And i kept thinking, my wine folks are not gonna wanna look at those cranes, but my brewing buddies, theyre gonna be like, check out those cranes. Ryan had gone to work for lagunitas. Small brewery, little small brewery called lagunitas, yeah. Um, and then that, uh, kind of helps understand that maybe beer is where we should go. Yeah. So we got back together. Id read the business plan. Ryan had the brewing expertise, and we started up the Brewing Company based on that. Weve taken the parts of the wine world that we think apply, but weve had to learn kind of a new approach. And some of you know, the wine worlds fantastic and super fun on one level. Absolutely. And, man, its sure fun to have a pint on the other level. Yeah, it wine world can be and feel a little exclusive. A lot of the retail can make it feel a little stuffy. On beer, everybody can have a fun time on an 8 pint. You really find more opportunities to have, uh, people enjoy your product with beer. I think it really speaks to a sense of community that you can create with a brewery that you cant quite do as much with a winery. We want people to have the whole experience. We want them to have the beer, we want them to have the history, and we want them to have the community gathering, watering hole that we try to provide. And its that combination that i think makes us special
