Characters of this years biggest movie, y barbies sidekick, may no longer be just a ken. Good morning on this thursday , september 14th. Yeah, a lot to get to. Were going to start the check of our forecast with drew. Yeah, good morning. Were in store for a very pleasant afternoon out there right now. Temperatures are starting out in the mid 50s to the low 60s. As you get outside. This is the mount tam camera. And what youre looking at is all that fog down below kind of bouncing off the city light. So our marine layer is with us this morning. There are areas of drizzle close to the coast. So well have that blend of sun and clouds early on. Well have that cloud cover pulling back to the coast as the morning goes on. Its a bright afternoon. Maybe 1 to 3 degrees cooler than yesterday. But all in all, we are in store for a mild to warm afternoon mid 70s around the bay shoreline. Low 80s and i should say upper 80s in our warmest spots inland. But a cooling trend is going to get underway here as we head into the weekend. So dont get used to those numbers. Well talk all about the changes coming our way in just a few minutes. But lets check in with jobina and see how were doing with traffic on this thursday. Thank you, drew. Good morning, everyone. So were going back to the bay bridge. This is where our mess is this morning. A motorcycle crash on westbound 80 past treasure island. It is in the process of clearing. So youre seeing the speeds come up according to the chp, a ten year old was on this motorcycle when it crashed this morning. This is a live look as you approach the tunnel here on the bay bridge. This is on the eastern span, i should say, in the upper deck there. So the problem here is that it flipped metering lights on early and now the backup has stretched well into the maze much earlier than usual. We still have two lanes blocked there. So those metering lights flipped on at 533. Thankfully, no injuries involved and well let you know when it clears. Thanks for being a governor. Newsom is doubling down on calls for San Francisco to find a permanent solution for homelessness and drug use and crime. He sat down with salesforce Ceo Marc Benioff at dreamforce yesterday saying that elected officials have to do more. The two discuss the challenges, possible solutions and how the city seemingly cleaned up the streets for the more than 40,000 people here for dreamforce this week. Why can San Francisco so not be like this every single day . Why does it take us having to say what is it . What what is that what the answer is . Yes. It can be like this. The governor is taking action to stop organized retail theft across the state, committing hundreds of millions of dollars to 55 cities and counties, including some right here in the bay area. Abc7 News Reporter lena howland is live in San Francisco with how all that money is going to be used. Lena hey, reggie. The state of california will soon be sending 267 million to Law Enforcement agencies and district Attorneys Offices across the state. And we now know some of that money is coming right here to the bay area. If you take a look at your screen right now, heres a look at some of the places were seeing in the bay area on that list that includes San Mateo County, Santa Clara County, San Francisco county, Sonoma County and Alameda County, just to name a few. As part of the governors real Public Safety plan, 41 sheriffs and Police Department s will be awarded up to 24 million each. That would help create retail theft, investigative units, train Loss Prevention officers and install advanced surveillance technology. In San Francisco. That means funding for blitz operations and crackdowns on crime and the selling of stolen goods. San Francisco Police say theyre on board would love to have these resources to help hire more officers to help combat the issue of organized retail theft. Attorneys offices across the state could also get a little more than 2 million each. That money is geared toward creating new teams dedicated to prosecuting organized retail theft and to establishing countywide de facto Intelligence Centers to serve as prosecution hubs for all related investigations within a county. Now, if approved by the board of state community corrections, these 55 different communities could see this money as early as october first of this year. Live in San Francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. Lena, thank you. Governor newsom is promising to intervene in the court case blocking San Francisco from clearing encampments. During an interview with politico. The governor said the state would file an amicus brief with the court. Thats a way for him to weigh in on the case in the courts, even though he is not directly involved. Newsom also said he hopes the case goes all the way to the supreme court. This stems from a lawsuit filed by advocates trying to prevent San Francisco officials from clearing encampments unless there are enough shelter beds for every unhoused person. Developing news and what could be an unprecedented strike for thousands of auto workers. A midnight deadline is looming and workers say they are ready to walk off the job if their demands are not met. Jobina this possible strike could have an impact across the country. Yes. Coomassie if this strike happens, it would be the first time in the United Auto Workers 80 year history that workers would be striking at three major automakers. All at the same time. So thats ford General Motors and stellantis, the company that makes chrysler and jeep vehicles. Members are calling for a 40 wage increase, a return to traditional pensions and a four day workweek. A strike would have implications for the entire us economy, with economists saying it would likely cause car prices to increase the union and automakers have been negotiating for months and appear to be far apart on an agreement. An all out strike is still a possibility. Were keeping all of our options open. Fords president and ceo says they put out a new offer and are, quote, optimistic, but also say some of the unions demands, like a four day workweek, are not sustainable. Well, if this strike does happen, the uaw has a plan that includes beginning at a specific site of plants and then expanding if negotiations dont make progress from there. That deadline for a new deal is 1159 tonight, reggie, thanks, jobina. Teachers in the Sausalito MarinCity School District are poised to walk off the job. Members of the Teachers Association voted unanimously to authorize a strike, which gives Union Leaders the power to set a potential strike date. It comes after a state appointed mediator failed to resolve the dispute between the union and the district over a wage increase. Teachers in two Bay Area School districts are taking action and demanding higher wages. And Lafayette Union members staged an informal informational picket, i should say, before school hours yesterday. The teachers say theyve been in contract negotiations since march, declining the districts final offer of a 12 raise. Were not retaining our qualified teachers and were not attracting new teachers because our Salary Schedule isnt competitive with those in the in the in orinda in moraga and in neighboring communities. If you look at the poverty level, for contra costa county, a single teacher is making under that the district issued a statement calling its offer of a 12 raise highly competitive for the region and saying it looks forward to ongoing talks. Fallout from a controversial decision this week by the Sunol Glen School board to ban all flags except for the American Flag and the california flag from School Campuses yesterday. Some parents reportedly kept their kids home from school. Parents tell our Media Partners at the east bay times they were concerned about the safety of their kids and possible hostility. After the meeting. Theyre now considering a recall against the Board Members who voted in favor of that ban. Heres a live look outside. You can see the marine layer down below. But once we burn it off, we will have sunshine peeking out out there. Heres the accuweather headlines. Foggy morning dense in spots with some areas of drizzle close to the coast. Its mild to warm this afternoon. It is very pleasant later on today. Over the weekend though, well start to flip the script, so to speak. Temperatures go below average and well keep that trend really for the foreseeable future. Look at the next two weeks. This is a temperature outlook across the entire west coast. We are going to keep cooler than average temperatures in place not only through the end of summer, summer officially ends next week, but also pretty much through the end of the month. Were not tracking any intense heat waves on the horizon right now. Fog is dense in the north bay and along the coast, 3 to 4 miles there from santa rosa to Half Moon Bay turns breezy later on this afternoon. Well have that onshore flow about 15 to 25mph. And we will do that once again tomorrow. Looking at today, were calling it sunny and seasonal. All these temperatures are very close to where we should wind up for this time of the year. Morning fog to afternoon sunshine overnight tonight, well bring back that marine layer, turning partly to mostly cloudy. Some coastal drizzle and numbers dropping into the 50s and 60s. Accuweather 70 forecast shows you a cooling trend gets underway here tomorrow. That continues over the weekend. Below average temperatures saturday and sunday. But we will have a fair amount of sunshine and well keep those temperatures below average early next week jobina. Thank you, drew. Good morning, everyone. So we are sticking with the bay bridge. Its been our problem spot for over an hour now due to a motor cycle crash on westbound 80 past treasure island. It still is clearing, but emergency crews are also still on the scene. Those speeds have dropped to around 30mph. In terms of details here, according to the chp, a ten year old was on this motorcycle at the time of the crash. Thank fully no injuries involved. But it did flip on the metering lights early at 533 and traffic is stacked through the maze. Its really rough through that part. Once you make it through the metering lights, itll take you about 21 minutes to get across the bay bridge in the westbound direction. Well end here with a busy look at the richmond, san rafael bridge. Reggie now were going to bring in ginger zee. She is live in lakeland, florida, and she is just off of not long ago an extremely interesting plane trip. Yes good morning. We have to see how that went. But i know youve got to tell us whats coming up on gma. Eight, eight hours ago, stepping off that thing, i was pretty happy to hit ground, ill tell you that much. But truly, ill tell you, the hero Hurricane Hunters were so incredible to watch. The physicality of what they do, the ability for them to get data. Theres more than a dozen instruments that are just gathering basically a ct scan of the storm that helps us put great info into the computer models and makes our forecast that much better. Without these planes, as our forecast would be pretty, pretty bad. So well get into all of that, plus where lee is going because coastal nova scotia, new brunswick, right along the maine border, downeast, maine, all preparing for kind of the landfall by saturday night. But big impacts all the way up the coast for waves. And then the cape cod, rhode island, up to coastal New Hampshire and maine in a Tropical Storm watch bar harbor itself in a hurricane watch. So well get into all the impacts of the hurricane lee, now that i know its so intimately. Also coming up here on gma, we will talk about that caver and we actually have him, the american caver who was rescued from thousands of feet below ground after falling ill. Hes joining us live and hell talk about his partner and his harrowing story. Plus designer and activist kenneth cole here live talking about the new initiative on Youth Mental Health to help safeguard kids online. Were going to have those stories in. So much more coming up right here on gma. Okay. So i know you love adventure. You love adrenaline. Having said all that, were you scared. I dont know if scared was the word. I was so brazen when i went in there because i never get seasick. I dont get carsick. I usually am the only one on our Big Adventures out on the ocean. Thats not sick. That wasnt the case yesterday. So it was it was more that i was like in my phone, writing my script, doing all my stuff. And then i was like, whoa, this is crazy. And you know, i only tell you guys these kind of details, but i used the air sick bags, bags. No, no, really paints a picture because for you to actually feel ill is saying a lot. Not writing a script in the middle of the hurricane. Thats her job. Then part of it was my fault. Yeah okay. The other quick thing i need to ask you about. Did i see a picture of you in the. The captains seat . What was going on there . Were you flying the plane . I dont know why they let me do that, but yes, i was. They gave me a little lesson. They were like, do you have any flight hours . And i was like, no, but i know a lot about meteorology. Yeah, cool. All right. You want to try . Great and then he passed over the controls, and i was able to sit behind the yoke. Thats what its called. Its cool. I know the lingo. And then i was able to turn the plane and they were like, its just like a video game. Im like, but its not. It was hard already. And we were in clear air like, well, before we got to the hurricane. So the physical me of watching what they do when theyre like just riding the winds and theres points where they call it crabbing and the whole thing has to go like this just to go straight doesnt even make sense. Like the physics works, but it is wild that theyre doing all of that, but then collecting this data, some of which weve never seen before, and thats what, you know, made it all worth it. I would do it again. Many, many times. And hey, i got a little hoarse voice out of it. So that was good. Got so much out of it. And we did too. Its fascinating to listen to and to see. Well be watching at seven. Ginger thank welcome to big tobaccos fantasyland. A new, healthier World Without cigarettes. As long as you dont count the 6 trillion sold worldwide every year. But were very close to average for this time of the year under mild to warm conditions. Lets see how that commute is doing on this thursday. Hi, jobina. Hi, drew. Thank you. Good morning, everybody. So the good news is that that crash we were following involving the motorcycle and ten year old, which is still hard to believe, has cleared on the bay bridge. But look at all these residual delays that it created. So starting in emeryville, all of those headlights are traveling in the westbound direction. Your average speeds are tracking around 30mph. There if you get to the bay bridge. And thats a part of your commute. 17 minutes across into San Francisco, once you make it through the metering lights that flipped on early at 533. So theres the backup at the toll plaza and well end showing you that cleared spot on the bridge. Your average speed as you approach that site is going to be around 37mph or jobina. Thank you. Abc seven News ReporterGloria Rodriguez is in the newsroom with why some of prices policies are dividing the community. Gloria, good morning. Reggie yeah, there have been many heated moments in these town halls and last night was no exception with some even storming out of that event. Alameda county District Attorney pamela prices town hall meeting drawing about 100 people to the Niles Discovery Church in fremont on wednesday. More than 300 people joined on zoom. There was a recall rally before the meeting. Her opponents, who believe shes too soft on crime, are spearheading a recall effort. But price hit back at those claims and says she believes the amount of guns in the community is playing a large part in the violence. She also talked about reforms that shes brought to the das office. And one particular point of contention was her view on charging enhancement. Its something many in the audience say they want to see more of, but its something the da doesnt always agree with and an issue that price campaigned on. The use of those enhancements has driven the explosion of prisons has forced us to invest in prisons versus education. I believe in reform. I dont believe in letting murderers out on close to no charges. So there has to be punishment before you can have reform. Patricia harriss son was killed and she believes that price didnt prosecute his killer harshly enough. She says that the killers charges were reduced to involuntary with enhancements taken away. Da price defended her record since taking office and remains committed to her platform of criminal justice reform. She says a crime wave started before she took office. Its happening all across california. And now were learning more about Governor Newsoms plan to stop the crime by investing hundreds of millions of dollars in dozens of cities and counties. Abc7 News Reporter lena howland live in San Francisco with how the money could help here in the bay area. Lena well, Governor Newsom says californians can soon expect to see more takedowns, more police, more arrests and more felony prosecutions. When it comes to organized retail theft. This thanks to a 267 Million Investment being made by the state and weve since learned some of that money is being sent right here to the bay area. Take a look at your screen. The Governors Office says that includes san mateo, santa clara, San Francisco, sonoma and Alameda Countys 41 sheriffs and Police Departments statewide will be awarded up to 24 million each. San mateo county has been no stranger to retail theft with recent heists at sephora and a lego store. Supervisor david canepa says he welcomes the grant money slated for his sheriffs department. But he thinks more changes are needed, especially with current legislation. We have to look at these penalties and the penalties that we have in place arent working when it comes to retail theft and organized crime. That has to be revised. And we have to look at prosecuting at a higher level than is currently being prosecuted at. Thats why 13 district Attorneys Offices across the state could also get a little more than 2 million each in the bay area. That includes Alameda County, santa clara and San Francisco. Her comments come as current speaker Kevin Mccarthy calls on his committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into president joe biden. Mccarthy is justifying the move by saying pelosi changed house precedent when she announced the formal inquiry into trump in 2019. He saying, well, nancy didnt bring a bill to no, we did. We had a few weeks where we had to make our case and i had signed Six Committee chairs to get the information and the rest. And that then prepared us to bring the bill to the floor.
