But we begin with the weather. Lisa is here and weve been talking a lot this morning about this calm pattern and yes, continues. Yes. And i think were all okay with that right . With temperatures not too hot as we look at our water vapor imagery, check out that curlicue offshore. Thats an area of low pressure that keeps sending in the low cloud deck. And today itll be a mixture of low clouds and high clouds from pier 39. Awfully gray out there, but mild, 6164 in oakland, Mountain View, 65, palo alto. But we have sunshine at the beach here with temperatures in the low 60s, upper 60s today. And theres a fair amount of sun in the south bay as well. So we will look at a winter scene here from mt. Tam where the clouds are going to thin out. Well have partly cloudy skies, temperatures, though, in a narrow range with low 60s at the coast and mid 70s inland. Well talk about the week ahead if we can mix it up. Coming up. Stephanie looking forward to that. Lisa, thank you. Well, turning now to a live look in new york city where the golden state will take center stage as the annual climate week summit begins today, california is now accusing five Major Oil Companies like chevron and exxonmobil over the risks of using fossil fuels. Attorney general rob bonta and governor gavin newsom are expected to speak at the about this lawsuit at the summit. Abc7 News Reporter ryan curry has the latest that california is taking on Major Oil Companies claiming they deceived the public about how oil and fossil fuels contributed to climate change. Documentation of internal discussion among fossil fuel. Big oil leaders talking about the impact on Global Warming and on climate of their industry. And as they acknowledge that internally and privately, they were telling the world something different. Attorney general rob bonta is demanding the Companies FundRecovery Efforts following the states extreme weather events he says have been fueled by climate change. Weve brought multiple causes of action against them, from public nuisance to destruction of Natural Resources to deception and falsification, to failure to warn. The Attorney Generals Office filed the complaint friday night against five Major Oil Companies. Two of which are here in the bay area, chevron, and this one, conocophillips and rodeo. Climate activists tell us its about time somebody takes legal action. Big legal action against Oil Companies as essential as their products are to our daily functioning. They have they also kill us and this industry has been giving with one hand taking away with the other. One of the parties involved in the lawsuit is the American Petroleum institute. In a statement, they said, this ongoing coordinated campaign to wage, meritless, politicized lawsuits against a foundational american industry and its workers is nothing more than a distraction from the Important National conversations and an enormous waste of california taxpayer resources. A big question is what this will do to gas prices that already risen in the past few years. As the attorney general says, the goal of this lawsuit is to hold the Companies Accountable for actions over climate change. It was caused by big oil. Who knew this day would happen . And these results would happen and they lied about it. And while they profited ryan curry, abc seven news. We are keeping you up to date on this story and others with alerts just like this. But are those efforts really working . Abc7 News Reporter luis pena talked to Business Owners and Street Vendors to get their take. Nearly 300 items confiscated in the mission. Another successful operation. This is how San Franciscos mayor london breed categorized the latest operation by thelic rks team working on cracking down on unpermitted vending of what she calls stolen goods. But are these operations actually making a difference . We went to the mission to find out. Las cosas aqui estan mejorando or orando . Are things Getting Better or worse here . Aqui esta tranquilo aqui estoy quiet si del otro lado si es diferente across the street is different on this side of the street. Vendors say theyre working together like an army to keep each other safe. But across the street, they say stolen goods are still being sold. We crossed the street to 24th street bar plaza and saw it bottles of shampoo or vitamins and personal Hygiene Products being sold on the sidewalk. No permits in sight, but Street Vendors who are permitted say there has been a slight difference in the last 3 to 4 months. But only when inspectors are there. Inspectors limpio, the inspectors are here. Its clean. Yeah. Cuando inspectors. Ya tu puedes enfocar al frente ya towercameras como como esta de vendedores . Say when the inspectors leave, you see how people are across the street selling San Franciscos department of public works inspectors patrol the area. Seven days a week. And according to their data, have made 100 confiscations in the last year. Theyre now ramping up their efforts. We have had more support from law enforcement, and thats really to support our team. Weve put up some metal barricades and then known hotspots, areas to keep people from spreading out on the sidewalk. And weve really been out there saturating the area with enforcement and people are starting to get the message as it stands now, theres only so much the city can do. Theres a state law that made it impossible for us to enforce a lot of the illegal vending thats going on on the streets of San Francisco. We cant do it with the police. We have to do it with an administrative enforcement supervisor, ronen represents her Office Confirmed theyre meeting with Business Owners tonight and are working with various stakeholders to make changes to the current vending ordinance. Business owners like ariel balam are hoping for changes fast as more businesses close in the mission. No people come. Whos going to come like in this situation in San Francisco . Los espana, abc seven news in the south bay. It was another big night for music at levis stadium with thousands, thousands of people lining up to see ed sheeran take a pienta tonight. Look at that light show to nearly 70,000 people turned out in the south bay to see sheeran perform. Thats more people believe it or not, than taylor swift and beyonce. A car parade will grace the streets of san leandro for joseph, joseph is a cancer survivor who returned home earlier this year after nine months of battling heart failure. If you would like to attend, the car parade will be at the address on your screen. Its 15,206 galt street in san leandro starting today at noon. Certainly a sweet homecoming for joseph. And if youre heading out to that or elsewhere across the bay area, well check in with lisa for the cooling trend continues this calm period we keep talking about. But its nice. Yeah, it is nice. And you know, it feels like fall. Fall is on the way next friday. So hopefully youre enjoying the last weekend of summer as we close it out for your sunday, its going to be a little different mix of clouds and sun out there. And the reason why weve had a system offshore, you can see it there that is just kind of been stuck there, cut off from the main flow of the jet stream, and that keeps sending in the low cloud deck. And today, a mixture of low clouds and high clouds. So as we get in closer, this is the view of the very gray north bay and east bay. While we are sunny in the south bay, this is sfo. You can see all the cloud cover stacked up here. It was sunny earlier for a short time, 61 downtown and a 64 in oakland, 63. 5 moon bay with the cloud cover mid 60s with some sun and Mountain View in san jose at 67. You can see how great is from emeryville and north westerly winds keeping the relative humidity up for some areas. It is 61. Santa rosa, 63 in nevada with mid 60s and the gray sky all the way out to the livermore valley. And finally last stop at the Oakland Airport, looking at mostly cloudy skies thinning out just a little bit today. So sun and clouds this morning, partly cloudy this afternoon. Well see the clouds thin out in the north bay and then theyre going to move up from the south. So youll have more in the south bay later on today. And this pattern is going to stay with us for the foreseeable future. Heres a look at the rest of the day. Today so the cloud cover slowly giving way. You can see its still kind of stubborn there in the north bay. But then look what happens. The cirrus high clouds begin to invade throughout the afternoon. Well get rid of those. And the low cloud deck pushes back in for your monday morning. So were left with a sunnier monday afternoon soon. So that should be pretty nice. And then into Tuesday Morning, once again, the ebb and flow of the low cloud deck giving way to more sunshine into your tuesday afternoon so you get the idea but to the temperatures change not very much as we get into tuesday, we could see numbers come up a few degrees just because were looking at more sun than well have today. And then into wednesday, notice again, mostly 60s and 70s and then even by thursday, it looks like the temperatures are going to drop off a little bit and we could have a bout of north winds as we get into thursday and friday in the sacramento valley. So well be watching that. It is certainly the season for that. Notice today, mostly cloudy looking at the upper 70s in the south bay, mixture of clouds and sun in the north bay with 74 in vallejo, 68 there for a High Temperature in richmond and then tonight it has been mild with some of those 60s ends with us cloudy conditions in the accuweather seven day forecast. So 60s coast 70 around the bay about 80 inland and if you like that were going to keep that theme going to the middle of the week where we could get a little warmer. Then autumn arrives on friday and then wouldnt you know it looks like we could see temperatures increase for that first full day of fall on saturday. Oh, well, well enjoy it. Its nice and its not too hot, not too cold. Yeah. Great. All right, lisa, thank you. Well, coming up, how a shark tank pitch may be used to help pgandes to prevent wildfires. Well explain coming up. The utilitys first ever pitch fest in san ramon included a Company Featured on shark tank, abc seven News ReporterLeslie Brinkley talked to some of the people who were making those pitches. See those dangling power lines there are 25,000 miles of above ground power lines in northern california. Pgandes wants to bury 10,000 miles of them in the next decade with the focus on fire threat areas. But its a notoriously slow and expensive process. So pg and heard pitches today from Nine Companies with inventions that could speed it up. Its the utilitys first pitch fest on the heels of a summer innovation summit, 600 contenders were whittled down to this weeks 54 finalists. So the big advantages to having the lines underground and is making the system more reliable so youre less potential to have weather related events. So less outages. Its safer in the fact that you would have reduced wildfire risk. So were not subjected to having lightning strikes on our lines or having trees fall into the lines. The biggest challenge in the bay area is finding space to put the lines underground. Theres Ground Penetrating radar right, that can go and look under the ground at obstacles. And then theres the export of that, the data. So that you can see before you dig , hey, theres a pipe there. Theres a boulder there. There will not be any delays in finding out or hitting a pole or an underground line or a cable finish. Projects on time and reduce cost. Other ideas discussed include how to manage the dirt from digging and using more resilient new materials. Currently the process that theyre using right now is extremely labor intensive and material intensive. Mark melni pitched his product on shark tank today. It was pgandes, he claims what takes them an hour could currently be reduced to a few minutes with a simplified connector. It is a three step four step process compared to a 50 to 54 step process. Pgandes hopes to bury 350 miles of underground line by the end of this year right now, they are digging in san mateo, woodside and concord along kirker pass road. Im leslie brinkly, abc7. News. It is 67 in san jose with the sunshine, 67in Mountain View, cloudy downtown 61. And look at this nice and sunny in santa cruz at 62. Santa rosa is cloudy, 61. And a lot of cloud cover in our inland valleys mid 60s there. So while we will see that cloud deck erode, were also going to see some high clouds move in from the south invading the east bay for a cooler day today. Developing news now, a sign of progress this morning as we begin the third day of the United Auto Workers strike. Sources telling abc news there isnt a deal yet, but talks yesterday went reasonably well. Abc News Reporter alison kosik reports. Workers standing outside a Ford Assembly plant in wayne, michigan, saturday morning holding signs. Part of the United Auto Workers union strike against all three big us automakers. Is a similar scene. About 50 miles away outside a stellantis plant in toledo, ohio. Nearly 13,000 uaw members walked off the job friday. A targeted strike against those plants in ohio, michigan and a third in missouri. Weve been taking a lot of concessions the last several contracts, and especially since the 2009 bankruptcy, we gave up holidays. We had to give up the cost of living allowance. The union wants to bring back pension plans, better Retiree Health care cost of living adjustments and a 40 pay increase over the next four years. Stellantis the owner of chrysler, saying theyve offered a nearly 21 increase in hourly wages. Thats roughly in line with whats on the table from ford and general motors. Before the strike. Ford Ceo Jim Farley calling their offer unpressed rented. And this offer is a great offer. And we want to get feedback on it to make it even better for them. Negotiations resumed this weekend. A uaw source telling abc news the conversations with ford were reasonably productive. They have to compensate us for what we do just as much as they get compensated for what they do. Alison kosik, abc news, new york. 1 million missed on opportunity. The city of oakland lost out on a big Crime Fighting grant after failing to apply for the money on time. Governor gavin newsom is allocating 267 million to help crack down on retail crime. The money was issued to dozens of cities across the state. San francisco received 17. 3 million. San jose pd received nearly 8. 5 million. But oakland zero. City Officials Say the application was not uploaded in time yesterday, the city administrator admitted oakland messed up. Quite frankly, we just missed it and so we failed in that in that in that space. And so there really isnt an excuse. All i can say is that well certainly look at this as an opportunity to improve and move forward. So joining me now with more on how oakland will move forward is councilman noel gallo for district five. Councilman great to have you with us. Thank you. And thank you for the opportunity to share the opportune cities with the public. But certainly what occurred recently in terms of the retail theft, the lack of us applying for the state funds was inexcusable. Bill, weve been at this business for many, many, many years, and this is the first time that we have failed to apply for an emergency that is primarily here in oakland at this level, at and its inexcusable. So it seems like there was a lot of hands involved in the filing of this application, including the chamber of commerce Business Owners, members of the community who was ultimately responsible for making sure it got uploaded and why didnt it happen . Well, no, you know, thats a government responsibility. Its a city of oakland responsibility. I travel with the National League of cities, with the league of cities of california to clearly identify Funding Sources that are available directly to the city of oakland. I dont need to talk about the emergencies that oakland has because we have one of the greatest safety theft emergencies in the state of california. That money has been made available by the governor. We all had notices of it. But for us to fail to apply for it, that is our responsible ability in house from the administrator all the way down to the Department Heads is that normally, traditionally every day . Well they do the applications for grants that we here in the city of oakland deserve not only the retail theft, but the smash and grab keeping a safe and dealing with the Small Businesses that are victimized. That money is available through the governors office. I met i spoke with them on friday and they gave me that information. But that information, the city of oakland has and we need to apply for those grants that the federal level, state level and county level. So there is no excuse why we failed to apply and receive the money that we greatly need at this time. The state told us your colleagues blame the late application on a technical issue. What was it exactly . A glitch in the system . Well, you know, the technical issue, i mean, its theres many ways to get around technical issues for that type of level of support, considering the emergence, see that i have an and, you know, i can do it here within my computer system. I can do it at the, you know, borrow yours or i can go to sacramento and get it done. So that for us to be able to miss out on those millions of dollars with the emergency that would have is, you know, you cannot blame the system or we need to take responsive ability at the administrative level moving forward. Oakland city administrator Justin Johnson told us yesterday appropriate action will be taken to address this. What do you think that should be . Well you know, the appropriate action. We already have in place. I mean, we apply for proposals daily, whether its dealing with housing, whether its dealing with, you know, the Police Department and other departments, parks and recreation. So we have that is we need to make sure that the administrator has the personnel in place and not only in place because they are in place to get the job done. And if we cant get job done, there are many grant grant writing uh nonprofit organizations out there that are available that out, that are that know how to write and follow through. We have a lobbyist townsend and associate that theyre responsible city on a daily basis is to make that Information Available to our city of oakland in terms of the funding thats available. And they help us through the political end. And but this time we completely failed. And we need to take responsibility for that and dont let that happen again. Do you think appropriate action in this case, someone will be fired or just more education is needed . Well, you know, you know, i do want to say, well, whoever it was, response, people should be fired. But then, you know, you know, that that action travels down from the mayor all the way down to the administration, all the way to the Department Heads. So there is no excuse. I did check in with the governors office. I did reach out to the board of community and corrections that that that, you know, present at this proposal and finalized it. And so they did give me the feedback that, well, you know, oakland did have the information from us and you just failed to submit your complete application on time. So, you know, the information is there. We just got to get the personnel and that begins and ends with the administrator to get this job done. As you know, councilman, theres already a lot of criticism about the leadership currently in the city. Would you consider missing this deadline . Another example of that and whats currently being done to ensure it doesnt happen again . Well, thats you know, at the end of the day, the mayor we have a mayor form of government. And at the end, i cannot interfere with the or ill be accused of micromanaging the administration and or ill wind up before the grand jury because im micromanaging so the mayor is responsible. From top to bottom in terms of making sure we have the employees. And she supervises the administrator and all the directors and including the police chief that we havent had for, what, months now at and thats where the responsibility. But at the Council Level i will bring up the issue in terms of, you know, to do a an evaluation of whos responsible. When i do submit information from the federal government or the state that theres money available, who is at the end of the day accountable to make sure that the information that i provided, that those proposals get written to benefit the residents of oakland. And thats the bottom line. So, councilman, you of all people know oakland needed this money. What have you heard from Business Owners . How are they reacting to this . You know, ive received emails every hour. I receive phone calls. I had people knock on my door yesterday that theyre completely upset with us in terms of, you know, not only providing support for the children and families. So they can walk in to school and walk back home from school. But the Business Community is struggling and suffering. So they theyre not only do they need a safe environment, they need a clean and safe and healthy environment. So customers are willing to come. You know, the response i get from visitors, you know, theyre theyre only oakland is a great place to visit, but only briefly. And theyre not interested in having growing their children here, sending them to school and certainly not living in oakland. And but thats the feedback that im getting for the residents, visitors and immediate family. So we need to do better here. Certainly a lot of work ahead. Councilman, as always, a pleasure having you with us. Thank you for your time. Thank you. Thank you. Absolutely.
