Good evening, in for diane. Its great to have you with us here on a tuesday night. We do begin with what we are learning at this hour about a deadly attack in afghanistan. An american twostar general killed by an afghan soldier. Its believed the u. S. Trained him. Tonight that u. S. Base, the scene of the shooting on lockdown. This evening what were learning about the socalled Guardian Angels in that room and what they did that likely saved lives. Abcs chief Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz has been reporting on the story all day for us with new details right here tonight. Reporter it was broad daylight at a training center, inside Major General harold greene, the Deputy Commander of the training mission, was meeting with the troops, americans, afghans, and other n. A. T. O. Forces. Then, from an elevated position, the gunman strikes. Hes a member of the Afghan Security forces, trained by americans in uniform, opening fire with on automatic weapon, hitting the general and those around him. More than a dozen wounded, many seriously. Within seconds, the socalled Guardian Angels, soldiers, americans armed and present to protect against such attacks, fire back, killing the gunman. But its too late. Greene, the american twostar general, one of the nations top ranking officers, was dead. The loss of any life is tragic. But the symbolism will have a huge effect on u. S. Forces. Reporter Major General greene who lived in virginia and is well known in the military, has a son in the army and a daughter who recently graduated from college. He is the first general officer to die in a war zone from hostile fire since vietnam. American soldiers pride themselves on taking care of their leaders. The many generals i have traveled with in iraq and afghanistan are always surrounded by security, but that failed today. The number of these insider attacks has gone down as American Forces wind down their war in afghanistan, but it is still a dangerous place and losing a general who had mentored so many troops in his more than 30 years in the military is an especially painful reminder. David. Extraordinary headline when we heard it today. Thank you. Were going to turn now to the chaotic scene still unfolding at this hour in new yorks times square, two double deckers involved in a crash, teeming with tourists not far from where you line up to get broadway tickets. One bus crashing into another. More than a dozen injured. Abcs ryan smith is there tonight and he leads us off. Ryan . Reporter the front of a tour bus nearly demolished happening at one of the busiest intersections in the world. Chaos tonight in the beating heart of new york city, times square, right by the famous broadway ticket booth. I saw the bus shoot across and i started screaming. Reporter a blue double decker tour bus crashing into another double decker tour bus which smashed into a lamp post, toppling it. We were about to cross the street and this crazy bus driver came at a very high speed and he hit the lady standing right next to my daughter. She flew through the air and landed right there. I pulled her back and we hit the pole. That was it. Reporter bystanders swooping in to help the injured. This woman in red huddled over one victim. Others carried away on stretchers. This eye witness captured the bloody scene on his cell phone. I heard a big boom. I saw the pole going like tumbling down. Everybody was, like, lying down on the ground injured. People screaming, asking for help. Reporter all of this unfolding in jam packed times square, steps from where tourists line up for tickets to broadway shows. Five city blocks were shut down in rush hour. There are 14 injuries so far, including a child. 11 of those injured were pedestrians and not even on either bus. The buses themselves werent crowded but three people on board were hurt. We did have one person, the tour guide, that had to be removed from the bus. Her head was caught under the dashboard and rescue one had to remove her. She wasnt badly injured. I was praying, hoping nobody got killed, you know what i mean . All i see is just people laying on the ground. Reporter police tell us the investigation is just beginning. Theyre going to be looking at City Surveillance video in the area as well as Surveillance Video from private businesses to find out what really happened. David . Ryan, thank you. I want to bring in former new York City Police commissioner ray kelly. You were watching this with me here late today. You were telling me this is one of the areas of new york that concerns a Police Commissioner the most. Last year we had a record high of 52 million tourists coming to new york city and virtually all of them at some point made it to times square. 52 million. A lot of relief tonight that the injuries werent worse than what we saw. Absolutely. It could have been a lot more people injured and obviously the injuries could have been a lot more serious. Were thankful and we were lucky. Commissioner, thank you. Were going to turn now to the deadly ebola virus. You remember the american doctor walking into the hospital in atlanta. Tonight this image, the second american patient, same hospital, this time wheeled in on a stretcher. You can see the hospital workers covered from head to toe in protective gear. Tonight her family saying that one week after considering possible funeral plans, they have new reason for hope tonight. Abcs Steve Osunsami is right there again tonight. Reporter shes home, but too sick to walk on her own, relief worker nancy writebol, fighting ebola, driven by convoy through the streets of atlanta to Emory University hospital. The paramedics who wheeled her into the isolation ward had to wear hazmat suits. Her Relief Agency says the liberian hospital where she worked is no longer taking new patients tonight, while cdc investigators on the scene try to determine exactly how she and dr. Kent brantly were infected. We dont know how nancy contracted this because we dont know where that contact point was. Reporter her job at the Field Hospital was personal coordinator, but when patients started pouring in sick with ebola this spring, there she was, right there, helping disinfect doctors and nurses. Before moving her today, we got a look inside her ambulance. Dr. Brantly was moved in the same vehicle. We put a protective sheet over the stretcher, make it easier to clean. Reporter in west africa, this is the deadliest outbreak ever of the disease. Of the nearly 2500 deaths reported since the 1970s, more than a third happened since march of this year. So frightening, today British Airways suspended flights to and from liberia and sierra leone. Despite the risks, one american doctor says she and others are still heading into the danger zone, trying to keep the whole world safe by ending the outbreak in africa. Were not cavalier about this. Everyone who is going into the field has training and background to handle this. Reporter both of these sick missionaries say they were answering gods call. Tonight their families are here at the hospital praying together. David . Steve osunsami with us again tonight. Steve, thank you. Around the world tonight and to the middle east now, that 72hour Ceasefire Holding this evening. These images of life under the fragile truce in gaza, children playing at a park. In israel tonight families in bomb shelters waiting to see if the quiet will hold. Israeli troops flash a v for victory as israel says those tunnels built by hamas, they say tonight that those tunnels have been destroyed. We turn now to the skies over england tonight and a White Knuckle moment on board a passenger plane, one man looking out the window and seeing this. Thats a fighter jet there off the wing suddenly escorting that plane to the nearest airport. That dramatic moment captured by people on the ground and all of it triggered by a note sent to the pilot in the middle of the flight. Abcs lama hasan tonight. Reporter the flight was just minutes from landing. Thats when, out the window, some of the 269 passengers saw this a Royal Air Force typhoon fighter jet responding to an emergency. I turned around and saw the fighter jet outside my window. That was the point where i started shaking. Reporter what the passengers didnt know is the pilot radioed in an alarm after being handed a note from a man that an explosive device was on board. The plane, heading from doha, qatar to manchester. The fighter jets scrambled to escort the plane in. Once on the ground, armed police swooped in, arresting the passenger who passed the note. It was terrifying, just terrifying all the way through. You just never really think youll be in that sort of situation, really. Reporter airlines around the world are on edge. We saw it in canada just two weeks ago. A s. W. A. T. Team storming a flight after a threat was made. Today in great britain, passengers once again shaken up. David, fortunately no suspicious device was found on board. Tonight, the passenger who made the bomb threat is still in Police Custody being questioned. David . Lama hasan in london, thank you. Back home and on the ground now and to the new danger in the west, more heavy rain and flash floods expected into the evening. And this astonishing moment near las vegas, that car swept away. Inside a driver trapped, another car there on the river hurdling toward them. We will show you what happened next here and also tonight, in Salt Lake City, a state of emergency, a home collapsing as the camera rolls. Abcs ryan owens is right there. Reporter about 20 families north of Salt Lake City are out of their homes tonight. After one of their neighbors houses, look at it before and now after, collapsed after heavy rains triggered a landslide. I called my husband and said wake up the kids, the mountain is coming down. Reporter with good reason, in the last two weeks, this part of utah has seen twice the amount of rain it usually does. Right now, we have one homeowner whos been damaged. Nobody else has been and were trying to keep it at that spot. Reporter heavy rain also wreaking havoc next door in nevada. They got to get out, man, theyre going to get swept away. Reporter where flash flood sent one car surging toward that white prius. A woman trapped inside. Look out get out get out reporter watch as a group of airmen passing by pull the woman out over the top of the drivers seat to safety. One of the men helping nearly swept away himself. The others saving him just in time. I dont think we really had enough time to be real scared. We just kind of did what we needed to do and made sure that everyone can get out of there relatively safe. Reporter we came up high to give you a perspective of just how much land came tumbling down that hill. Its raining again tonight. Its light but thats still not good news and theres no word on when those families will be allowed back home. David . Ryan owens in utah, thank you. I want to bring in our chief meteorologist cecily tynan from philadelphia. You were telling me the rains in the west were not in the clear yet. Thats exactly right, david. The monsoonal moisture is pushing up to the north so the border of nevada, idaho and utah could get two to three inches of rain, could cause more flash flooding and mudslides. In addition, theres a cold front slicing through the middle west. So parts of iowa into kentucky, locally four inches of rain, the potential for Severe Weather and flash floods there. Well be watching that. Youre also tracking two hurricanes and a Tropical Storm tonight. This is really a remarkable event for hawaii. Two tropical systems heading right toward the island, the first one major hurricane iselle. This has maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour. As it pushes toward the island it will be encountering wind sheer and dryer air so it will be weakening. It looks like it will be hitting the Hawaiian Islands as a Tropical Storm over the weekend, followed by julio. Meantime in the east we were talking about bertha last night. Where is that Tropical Storm now . Fortunately bertha is no threat to land. Its weakening and it will continue moving out to sea. The problem though, along the eastern seaboard dangerous rip currents. Yesterday there was a drowning off the coast of Atlantic City when a woman was swept away so this is something we really have to watch. Cecily, thank you. As you know, we are watching those wildfires in the west, 11 now in california where tonight firefighters received a boost from Mother Nature in the form of rain, cooler weather and more humidity. We saw images of one woman in Northern California capturing this moment, planes dropping fire retardant from the sky right in her back yard. And this unique approach as well, a cabin wrapped in foil by firefighters this week. Take a look at this little survivor in washington state, a bear cub spotted by neighbors, rescued from the fire zone. Tonight were told that bear is recovering. Theres still much more ahead on world news this tuesday night. The rescue at sea this evening, the father, the kids, 12 miles out, their boat sinks. The one device they had that saved them all. Later tonight, look at the kid who steals the show. I dont watch the news because im a kid and apparently every time grandpa gives me the remote after we watch the powerball.
