A mangled mess in a week that has seen some grim aviation scenes. Some good news here, though. Somehow, 11 people survived this crash, according to local reports. One girl climbing out of the wreckage, borrowing a cell phone and calling her mother, saying, mom, my plane crashed. Still, 47 others were trapped inside and killed. Relatives learning the news at the airport. The aircraft, an atr72, is a twin turboprop, which can carry up to 74 passengers. It was flown by taiwans transasia airways. Why did it go down . The falling rain you see in these pictures was much heavier and may have contributed to the crash into some buildings. This typhoon, named matmo, had just passed over the islands. In fact, the flights departure had been delayed for an hour and 45 minutes because of the heavy storm. Finally taking off a little before 6 00 in the evening. But just a little more than an hour later, the twin prop plane attempted to land at the penghu islands. The first landing with the plane just 300 feet above the runway, aborted by the pilot. The second time around, the plane went down off airport grounds. Under lights, recovery crews worked and a black box has already been found. It has been a tough week, but generally, deaths in aviation accidents are down. And here, survival for some. Generally, its those riding in the back of the plane who make it out alive. At the end of the day, we have to look at the whole picture. And the whole picture is, flying remains far safer than you even getting in a car and driving to the grocery store. Reporter in the taiwan incident, the good news is that investigators have that black box, and they will know very soon whether or not this what happened in the last couple of seconds before that crash, diane. In front of grieving relatives, hidden away from the cameras behind screens and dutch royalty. Then, the procession. An armada of hearses. And thousands of strangers, lining the streets to pay tribute. Its a very black day for everybody, especially for people from this part of the country. Reporter there is sadness, and a demand for justice. The bodies delayed coming home five days after the crash. But today, for the families of passengers, from 12 countries across the globe, it was about profound loss. Through the mourning, the investigation carried on, the world demanding answers. Tonight, the black boxes now in the hands of the experts who say they do not appear tampered with. This, while the rebels show no signs of backing down. Today, accused of shooting down two ukrainian fighter jets. Tonight here in the netherlands, now that the victims are finally coming home, the grim process of identifying the bodies will begin. The u. N. Says nearly 75 of the almost 700 palestinians killed here were civilians. Israel says its targeting militants and accuses hamas of using innocent people as human shields, itself a war crime. While more than 2,000 rockets have been fired from gaza into israel. Two israeli civilians have been killed, while more than 30 soldiers have died. And today, israels main airport, once again empty, following the faas extension of the ban on american flights to israel for another 24 hours. Other Top International airlines doing the same, after a rocket wasnt intercepted and landed a mile from the airport on tuesday, claimed by hamas as a victory. And diane, secretary of state john kerry spent the day in israel, pushing a ceasefire deal. But has left again tonight empty handed. And now, back here at home, where the plot has thickened tonight in the case of those mysterious white flags found on top of the landmark Brooklyn Bridge. The incident raising so many questions about security. Tonight, our linsey davis tracked down top officials to ask what they know about it all right now. Reporter new york city is beefing up security on the iconic Brooklyn Bridge tonight after someone scaled its iconic towers, unfurling those mysterious giant white flags. Theyre now installing additional cameras on the bridge, even as a top city official tells abc news the bizarre stunt doesnt reveal a gaping hole in security. Does it reveal how vulnerable we are . Not necessarily. Its somebody replaces a flag is different than somebody trying to do some damage to the facility. Reporter still, this is the third high profile breach of a major new york landmark in a year. In september, brazen base jumpers leapt off of the top of the 1 world trade center. Then in march, a teenage boy also scaled that building, sneaking past security. It was a challenge to the Police Department, and they succeeded. The Police Department failed. Reporter Police Believe the people behind the bridge stunt were experienced climbers or worked in construction. They were able to scale the 276foot towers, making it past the locked gates that sit atop the bridges steel cables. Once up top, the team had to reach two different locations. Take a look at this earth cam video. At 3 30 tuesday morning, the light illuminating one of the flags flickers out. 12 minutes later, the same thing with the other flag. Police are now looking for five people seen in Surveillance Video crossing the bridge about 20 minutes before the first light went out. The Police Department considers it a troubling security breach. Just to give you an idea how sensitive this area is, were talking about the largest collection of government buildings in one area outside of washington, d. C. Take a look. From where we are on the Brooklyn Bridge, the tower on the manhattan side, nypd headquarters, city hall, the federal courts, all about half a mile away. There were four Police Officers on the bridge that night, none of them are being disciplined. Abc news has also learned that cameras on the bridge are notoriously bad at night. Reporter 54yearold theodore wafer appearing expressionless in court today, accused of killing 19yearold Renisha Mcbride in the middle of the night on his front porch. She was drunk that night and injured, stumbling to his door for help after a car accident. Wafer grabbed his shotgun and fired through the screen door, killing mcbride. Hes claiming selfdefense. His lawyer saying today in court her client feared for his life. Somebody comes right in front of him. Less than two feet away, coming at him from the side and he sees half a figure and he shoots. Reporter the case has sparked outrage. Some comparing mcbrides killing to that of florida teen trayvon martin. The prosecution today arguing mcbride posed no threat to wafer. That there was no sign of any attempted breaking into this house. Reporter in court today, the prosecution played wafers 911 call to police shortly after the shooting. I just shot somebody on my front porch with a shot gun, banging on my door. Reporter wafers lawyer argues he was terrified that mcbride was pounding on the front door. Boom, boom, boom reporter at the center of this trial, a michigan law that allows a person to use deadly force to defend themselves in their own home if they honestly and reasonably believe theres a danger of death or great bodily harm.
