And abcs bob woodruff is there on the ground in tel aviv, where a powerful rocket managed to penetrate the legendary iron dome. Bob . Reporter diane, what you can see right here happened this morning. A rocket was launched into this neighborhood, landed in this spot, completely shattered this area behind me. This is less than a mile away from the tel aviv airport. This was a very close call. So close, in fact, that a delta flight headed from new york to tel aviv was rerouted to paris, midflight. Prompting that call from the faa prohibiting all u. S. Carriers from flying to or from tel aviv up to 24 hours. A move not seen since the first gulf war in 1991. The passenger jet being shot down over ukraine has raised the fear of flights over war zones. On a given day, a large number of flights from around the world here. Tonight, flight radar showing skies over israel quiet. The rocket that forced the flight to be rerouted hit just after 10 00 a. M. Israels iron dome Defense System failing to intercept it. The woman inside this bedroom survived. Her neighbor left for work just five minutes before it struck. He believes hamas was targeting the airport, but hit this instead. The airport from here is one kilometer straight, like this, is the airport. Reporter casualty numbers rising on both sides tonight. Israel struck several targets inside gaza today. More than 630 palestinians have been killed in the past 15 days. The u. N. Believes 75 could be innocent civilians. As for israel, scenes like this, thousands at a funeral for a soldier killed. 28 soldiers and two civilians have died so far. The military confirming one of their soldiers still missing, unclear if he is dead or alive. Now, theres no indication right now of any upcoming ceasefire. So, israel has continued to brace itself for attacks like this. Diane . Bob woodruff, so good to have you reporting from the middle east tonight. And from the middle east now to ukraine, and the new evidence about flight 17. Those last seconds before the passenger plane was blown out of the sky. Tomorrow, the first bodies of victims will arrive in the netherlands. The nation there, and the families, observing a day of mourning. Tonight, abcs chief Foreign Correspondent terry moran is on the ground. Reporter their journey home is at long last under way. Today, the bodies of the passengers of flight 17 were taken by train from a village near the crash site to the ukrainian city of kharkiv. And then by plane, they will go to the netherlands, which lost 193 of its people. I am very aware of the fact that to my people, from my country, we are bringing our victims back home. Reporter the grief from this crime crisscrosses the world. At the airport outside amsterdam, tears at an impromptu memorial. While people were sharing the open letter by a father, who lost his 17yearold daughter on the flight, writing, thank you very much mr. Putin, leaders of the separatists or the ukraine government for murdering my loved and only child. In australia, which lost 28 souls, a candlelight vigil. In malaysia, remembering the crew. We are like a family because on the air, once we are on the air, its just us. Reporter today in ukraine, while the u. S. Embassy posted a schematic diagram pinpointing exactly where they believe the missile intercepted the plane, here at the crash site, a team of malaysian and dutch investigators got unfettered access to examine the wreckage, looking for clues. This was the cockpit of the plane. And this is the kind of thing that investigators are going to be looking at. Is this shrapnel damage . Is it damage from the breakup of the plane . And has the wreckage been tampered with . International monitors told abc news today that the planes wreckage has been, quote, significantly altered since the crash, and that they have seen local workers cutting away at it. We did see workers using a dieselpowered saw to get a closer look at the fuselage. We cant draw any conclusions. Thats not our role. But its an observation that we made. Reporter tonight, the u. S. Intelligence community is doubling down on its claim that russia is ultimately responsible for this attack. Theyre pointing to pictures of the wreckage, which they say shows strong evidence a russianmade missile fired from rebelheld territory, brought down that plane. Diane . We thank terry moran. And i want to bring in abc aviation consultant stephen ganyard, retired fighter pilot. Steve, we know now what it may have been, the moments before that missile hit the plane. Thats right. The sa11 system that we see here in the graphic is confirmed today as being responsible for bringing this airplane down. When the sa11 is shot, it goes out and gets close to the target, it explodes a warhead that sends out a big fan that goes and impacts with little pieces of very hot metal into the airplane that its tracking. It explodes away from the plane but sends a spray of shrapnel into it. Thats right. Weve seen some evidence on the ground of that today. Weve seen some pictures that appear to show some of the damage that comes from these hot little pieces of metal that will puncture the skin and go into the airplane. Looks very much like shrapnel damage. And a quick question about those black boxes that have now been turned over. Can they be penetrated without anybody knowing . Would you know for sure if theyve been tampering with it . There are seals on them, diane. And so, the trained investigators will look and make sure those seals arent broken. Even if somebody were able to get inside, theyre not going to be able to change what was recorded on those programs. So, i think well be pretty confident to know if its been tampered with or not. All right, retired colonel stephen ganyard, as always, thanks so much. And now, here in new york, a mystery atop one of the most famous landmarks in the nation. And it is raising real questions about security here. The brooklyn bridge, and the two American Flags crowning the majestic spires, but today, in their place, two white flags. So, who put them there and why . Abcs linsey davis with clues tonight. Reporter an eerie sight this morning, flying high above the brooklyn bridge. Two white flags in place of the American Flags typically hoisted above these iconic towers. The ability to pull off a stunt on this scale is as troubling as it is mysterious. Theres some indication of some good deal of preoperational planning. Reporter the bridge sweeps over new yorks east river, spanning more than a mile. The towers standing 276 feet tall. The cables holding it all together 16 inches in diameter, each comprised of more than 5,000 galvanized steel wires. The stars and stripes normally fly around the clock, but take a look at this earth cam footage. At 3 30 this morning, the waving American Flag suddenly disappears. Watch again. That light seems to go out. Police today saying these aluminum pans were used to cover the bridge lights. Those white flags . Actually old glory, bleached white. Today, as workers scaled the bridge, taking down these symbols of surrender, police reviewed surveillance tape showing four to five people crossing the bridge about 20 minutes before the flags came down. Theyre telling you that your security is not effective. What more of a telltale sign do you need to show you that youre not doing a good job . Reporter this landmark considered such a high profile terrorist target, its under 24hour police surveillance. Just in this area alone, at the entrance to the bridge, in a span of about 20 yards, count them one, two, three security cameras and then a sign alerting you to their presence. Tonight, the nypd promising a full probe, even as specially trained workers hoisted American Flags once again. Those American Flags back up tonight. And police saying they believe whoever was responsible likely had some kind of training in climbing or construction. But they do not believe that this was a terrorist act. Theyre saying this was even possibly an elaborate art project. Still a mystery tonight, diane. An art project. Okay, thank you so much linsey davis, reporting in. Nearly five times the size of seattle. 2,100 firefighters are now on the ground, with at least 150 homes burned. The thick smoke and flames darkening the sky with an eerie red glow. Firefighters are doing their best to get ahead of the fire and protect homes. It can be down here in a matter of 10, 15 minutes.
