What it reveals. Good evening. Diane is with her family this holiday. As we come on the air tonight, millions of americans are now bracing for this, hurricane arthur growing in size tonight. You can see it swirling behind me, winds gusting up to 90 Miles Per Hour or more. This could very well become a category two hurricane before its over. This satellite image tonight says it all, the view from space, churning off the carolinas. 4th of july celebrations cancelled in so many cities and towns up and down the coast. Look at this tonight, the eye of the storm as seen from above, the monster of a storm with very bad timing and theres something else. The team at noaa reminding us that three storms, 1996, 2002 and now 2014 all named arthur and taking aim at North Carolina. Our extreme weather team is standing by tonight all along the coast line where those evacuations are now under way. Lets get right to it. Meteorologist ginger zee tracking this every step of the way. She has the newest track coming in. Where is arthur right now . Just southeast of wilmington North Carolina. The track is going to take after this with plenty of warm water to feed on, were going to see it strengthen. Thats why it could become a category two. Off shore of new jersey and income but still with some rain and combined with a cold front. I wanted to point out, too, massachusetts, part of the cape and nantucket will have Tropical Storm warnings. Drier air is behind this cold front and thats going to help sweep this storm away but nearly five inches of rain, weve already seen tornado warnings. We take it hour by hour here so you can plan your 4th of july. Look at long island covered in rain on friday. In boston, 10 00 p. M. Plenty of rain up through new england. 45 Miles Per Hour winds or better. The Tropical Storm warnings and of course the hurricane warnings anywhere from myrtle beach to Virginia Beach tonight. The carolina coast line tonight lashed with wind and rain. Watch as arthurs storm clouds pour into wrightsville beach, knock North Carolina. The midday sky blackened. 35 miles out to sea, swells as tall as twostory buildings. 18, 20 foot right there. A mountain of water. Reporter sand kicked up on the shores. We drove across much of North Carolina today, the rain sometimes blinding. The roads inland clogged with cars heading away from the coast. This line stretches for miles down the road. Were just starting to see people driving away from the coast and traffic already is pretty bad. I think everybody is starting to realize that this is going to be a little more serious than everybody had expected. Reporter with the storm bearing down, some or boarding up, and many are heeding the governors call. For those areas that are not being evacuated, please hunker down. Reporter as the lightning cracks overhead we were surprised to see earlier how many folks stayed around, seemingly unaware that a category one storm is barrelling for this very town, possibly going to make its first landfall right here later tonight. Well stay tuned. Matt gutman tonight thank you. Moving up coast to mandatory evacuations, families giving up on vacation plans, homeowners trying to get out of harms way and many taping up their windows. We asked here tonight, does that tape ever make a difference . Abcs david kerley is standing by in nags head, North Carolina tonight. Reporter good evening, david. Some people have left this area but as you can see tonight there are still folks who are staying on the beach. Theyre going to ride it out. The hardest hit area will be right here, the strongest part of the storm will hit here, and a lot of businesses and tourists say this is a very early hit. As arthur moved up the carolina coast, the sign for some vacationers was clear, evacuate. They said go and youre going to go . Better than getting our car flooded i guess. Cassie rode out Hurricane Sandy but arthur has her packing up. Were heading to safer ground and hope that they call us back. Reporter only Cape Hatteras is on mandatory evacuation. We thought we might leave later this afternoon. Reporter the byers of ohio like so many are keeping on eye on the tv, the forecast of the first hurricane of the season which is gaining strength. Businesses are worried that their cash registers will be hit by the storm. This is traditionally the busiest week of the year. The timing is not good for anybody. Reporter back at the vacation home, the byers have made a decision about leaving. At this point youre going to stay . I believe, yes, i think were going to ride it out. Reporter david, you mentioned there were three past arthurs. Theres actually a fourth. Theres actually a fourth and businesses very good there. Its just up the road. Its an oyster bar. I love that. They had the name first. David kerley tonight, thanks to you. Theres one more concern from the storm zone tonight, a major bridge connecting some of the communities of the popular outer banks. Its the only one and its been damaged before. They just fixed it and now of course the test. Abcs Marci Gonzalez on that tonight. Reporter there are concerns about a vital life line here in the outer banks. I want you to take a look at this. This is the bonner bridge today connecting the islands of the outer banks, especially hatteras. It recently reopened. As arthur approaches theyre worried that a major storm surge could cause serious damage, leaving communities cut off from the rest of the islands. Heres why theyre concerned. This is some of the damage Hurricane Sandy did, battering and buckling roads, isolating towns. They will be watching that bridge closely tonight, david. Our thanks to marcie, david, matt, ginger, were tracking arthur at abcnews. Com throughout the night and much more on nightline and tomorrow morning on good morning america. Reporter the white house says its aggressively sending the opposite message, today unveiling a commercial campaign in spanish.
