This wednesday night. We have some news in the search for the passenger plane that vanished 12 days ago. Tonight, the leading edge of the search has dramatically narrowed, zeroing in on two sections of ocean. At this hour, the hunt is on. So, lets go straight to Abcs David Kerley at the map. And, david, show us the change and what we know tonight. Reporter diane, a day and a half ago we were talking about a search area covering 1. 25square million nautical miles. Those two arcs. Now, its off australia where officials are focusing. And tonight, we learned that experts from the ntsb have been able to refine those satellite signals from the aircraft. Theyve created two possible paths that go right through the australian search area. And it basically cut the size of the search area, from the size of texas, in half. These search planes have now narrowed their focus. Here they are. Two possible paths the malaysia 777 might have taken. A flight from malaysia towards the south pole, ending, they think, off australia. Why here . Because those hourly satellite pings from the jet have yielded far more clues than ever expected. And calculations by british and u. S. Experts have been handed over the australians to help in the search. The area at the end of those analyses has been refined. By work done by the National Transportation safety board on the fuel reserves of the aircraft and how far it could have flown. Reporter the australians have their aircraft now concentrating around the two plot lines. And so is the u. S. s new hightech sub hunter, the p8, flying missions, looking for any wreckage in the vast areas. For the first time, the president spoke about the missing jetliner publicly. We have put every resource we have available at the disposal of the search process. Theres been close cooperation with the malaysian government. Reporter that now includes the fbi, which has been asked to help in the investigation of the pilot, at least when it comes to the pilots home simulator. Hi, everyone. Reporter waiting for a week to confiscate the simulator, malaysian authorities now say there were deleted files on the computer. So, the fbi is on the case, trying to recover those files. And this is a bit of a race because the batteries, diane, in those black boxes only last 30 days. Weve already lost 12 days. Just a couple weeksplus left. All right. David kerley at our map tonight. And from the search deep in the sea to the depths of emotion for the families of the missing. Abcs bob woodruff was there in kuala lumpur as the anguish erupted into anger. Reporter a mothers anguished cries today. Raw proof of families at their breaking point. [ crying ] where is my son, she wails. Why wont your government give me an answer . Today, she joined 20 family members of flight 370 passengers, protesting at the daily malaysian Government News conference, accusing officials of lying to them. Theyre doing nothing, this woman screams. The malaysian government is doing nothing. The scene, descending into bedlam as the families were dragged out of sight. That mother screaming one word, why . Malaysian officials later defending whats been a confusing investigation, riddled with contradictions. We are trying our very best. And it is hard and heart wrenching, even to me. But the brother of passenger phillip wood, today, telling us hes very frustrated about the malaysians making it into an issue. Phillip wood works in malaysia. His desk now covered with hundreds of colorful origami cranes. A message from his coworkers, they are still not giving up hope. Of course, the families here in kuala lumpur feel exactly the same way, diane. They are begging the world not to forget their children. And also, pressuring the government to get them home as fast as they can. Thank you, bob. Now, were going to turn to steve ganyard, abc news aviation consultant. Steve, with this dramatic reduction in the search area, and im going to put the map up once again, is this search more doable . It is more doable, diane. Its a good news bad news story. Weve narrowed that search area to come down quite a bit. But the problem is, its still such an unbelievable large part of the ocean that we have to search. As the australians said today, it will take weeks still just to look at this smaller search area. And can those search planes see deeply into the ocean . And how deep is the ocean right there . No, unfortunately, the planes cant see under the ocean. So, if were going to find something, its going to have to be on top of the surface, still floating. Something they can see, perhaps some of the radar can see some reflection. But it has to be on top of the water. They cant see down the bottom of that ocean. As weve talked about all week, this is 10,000 to 15,000 feet. And theres some trenches out there, to 20,000 feet in the search area theyre looking. And remind us once again how far the pings can be heard on the black boxes. Optimally it can be heard five to ten miles. But if its at the bottom of the ocean, and its almost several miles below the ocean, you have to be almost right on top of it. This is why its so important to get to that wreckage as soon as we can and get a ship out there to hear the pings before the battery on that black box gives out. The race against time continues. Thank you again, steve ganyard. Our team on the story again tonight. But we move on, now, to the dramatic conclusion in a story we first broke here at abc. The harrowing descriptions from families trapped inside runaway cars. Well, tonight, the maker of those cars, toyota, has agreed to pay a massive 1. 2 billion. And abcs chief business correspondent, rebecca jarvis, now has the details. Reporter it was a series of horrific accidents that put fear in the hearts of drivers. Our accelerators stuck. Were in trouble. We cant theres no breaks. Reporter sudden, unintended acceleration in some toyota and lexus vehicles was killing people on the highways. Were approaching an intersection. Hold on. Pray. Reporter four people died in that 2009 crash. And a wave of reports about runaway toyotas sparked a federal investigation. In todays 1. 2 billion settlement with the Justice Department, toyota admitted that it misled u. S. Consumers by concealing and making deceptive statements about unintended acceleration. Toyota confronted a Public Safety emergency as if it were simply a Public Relations problem. Reporter the Justice Department says toyota had first blamed driver error, then admitted floor mats could trap the gas pedal in some models. But in january 2010, abcs brian ross aired the story of a runaway toyota in new jersey that could not be blamed on either the driver or floor mats. It just took off on you . It just took off. It seemed like the more i hit the brake, the harder it wanted to accelerate. Reporter it turned out some reporter the settlement could provide a roadmap into a similar investigation of General Motors and its faulty ignition switches. Today, the attorney general made that clear, saying, other Car Companies should not repeat toyotas mistake. Meanwhile, in a statement, toyota says, in the more than four years since these recalls, we have gone back to basics at toyota, to put our customers first. Rebecca jarvis, abc news, washington.
