Avalanches from the heavy snow that killed two people in utah now, authorities across the country tonight worried about people dying on the roads. 26 people were hospitalized when their tour bus slipped on the black ice in southwestern pennsylvania. Utility crews from around the country, trying to restore power this evening to thousands of families whove been in the dark here for a week. This has been the longest. This is outrageous. Reporter in georgia tonight, theyre calling all of their power crews back home, stat, for a storm that could be bigger than the 2 inches of snow that paralyzed atlanta two weeks ago. I was trying to get on the 675. Im kind of spinned out right here and im sitting in the road. Reporter the citys response became a running joke like this one, that it only took a snowflake to shut the city down. Today, georgias governor doing what many of his critics say he should have done then declaring a state of emergency in 45 counties before the snow and ice. The wrongway driver suspecting of drinking, slamming into a sedan with four fraternity brothers. Five dead here. Less than six hours later, in southern california, a 21yearold woman, convicted of dui four years ago and suspected of being drunk, also drove the wrong way at high speed. Hitting one car that slammed into another. That driver survived but her sister and five other people were killed. While wrongway accidents account for a small fraction of all crashes, they are 27 times more likely to be deadly. And 60 of the time its a drunk driver traveling fast. If its a wrong way, no matter what speed it is, its going to be a big crash. Reporter but many times its not drunks. Often the highway design is a problem. On and off ramps next to each other. With that in mind, officials suggest lowering the wrongway signs, make them bigger and add a second set farther up the offramp.
