Games, the u. S. Government announced new intelligence information that terrorists may be targeting planes with explosives smuggled onboard inside tubes of toothpaste. Abcs senior justice correspondent, pierre thomas, has the details pouring in right now. Reporter as the olympic torch made its way into sochi today, a new warning from u. S. Intelligence put commercial airlines on notice. Terrorists may try to use toothpaste containers to smuggle explosives onboard planes. I believe thats very specific and credible information. Reporter sources tell abc news, the new potential threat is not necessarily directed at americans. But does pertain to all International Flights into russia during the games, including a small number from the u. S. Since 9 11, terrorists have repeatedly come up with creative attempts to blow up commercial and cargo planes. There was the shoe bomber, the liquid explosives plot, the underwear bomber and the plan to smuggle a bomb in a printer cartridge. While its not yet clear what type of explosives could be used in a toothpaste plot, its clear that even small bombs can be extraordinarily dangerous. A military bomb technician tells us tonight, that certain explosives in gel or paste form can be easily molded into a powerful bomb, fitting into a toothpaste tube. Heres what the liquid explosive bomb could have done. The shoe bombs potential damage. Thats what the underwear bomb would have done. The russians have been onedge, due to a series of threats from islamic militants, mainly from dagestan. At a congressional hearing yesterday, u. S. Intelligence officials hinted that specific olympic threats were being discovered. There are a number of specific threats of varying degrees of credibility that were tracking. Reporter hundreds of thousands are traveling to russia for the games, including 15,000 americans. I imagine all of them will have toothpaste, diane. And, pierre, i want to ask you. Give us a sense of what level of certainty they have about this attack. And specifically toothpaste tubes. Reporter again, the information they have, has recently come in. It was specific only to toothpaste tubes, as for as we know. Again, theyre taking it seriously. But they dont have more specifics than that at this point. So, at this moment, taking it seriously. I know you will be following up throughout the night. Thank you, pierre. We have another note of a different kind from sochi tonight. The face of team usa, snowboarding superstar, shaun white, has pulled out of tomorrows big event, giving up the chance for a gold medal in the slopestyle because of, quote, the potential risk of injury. Theres been criticism of the way the russians constructed the course. And several athletes, including white, have already been hurt in practice runs. Now, we move on here to the newest round of wicked weather. 104 Million People in a duel with nature. Stuck at airports again. Power lines down. Across twothirds of this nation, drivers trying to make the trip home on snow and ice. Our extreme weather team on the story, again, tonight. Abcs gio benitez starting us off. Reporter yet another winter blast. This one bringing heavy, wet snow and ice. Especially hardhit, the philadelphia area. More than 500,000 people here will spend the night in the dark. Have you even thought about the idea of being without power for as long as a week . Were trying not to. Reporter ice has forced power lines and trees to come crashing down. Watch as this one causes a nearby van to catch fire. A power line 300 feet long, covered in 2 inches of ice, gets more than 2,200 pounds heavier. Thats more than enough to snap a power line. Hundreds of thousands, now left in the dark. Now, youre getting ready to go to your neighbors house because they have power. Yeah, they do. Across the street. Reporter getting the power back for a city is a painstaking and unpredictable process. Power lines down on roads are one of the biggest threats to public safety. A first priority. Alongside hospitals and fire departments. Crews work to restore power to generators, then, transmission lines, substations, and finally individual lines to homes. The icy snow snarling air travel, too. More than 3,000 cancellations. And more than 7,500 delays at airports nationwide. On the roads in boston, snow, bringing the downtown to a crawl. Ive had enough. Please, no more snow. Reporter plows in indiana, trying to clear those highways. And in new york state, a major interchange simply shut down. Just a few tips when driving in those dangerous, icy conditions. Make sure youre not using the Cruise Control option because you want to be in control of your car. And when youre looking at your exhaust pipe, make sure its clear. Make sure theres no ice or snow packed in. And perhaps most obvious, just drive slowly. Even if you werent driving, you had problems. Just look at the crowds that formed after some of new yorks subway lines stalled. Back in the philadelphia area, officials are telling us, it could take as long as a week for some to get power back. Temperatures will be below freezing for days. And another storm could hit sunday night. And its not just the power lines. Take a look at this tree right hire. A large branch broke off and fell on a man who was just trying to help his neighbor. Diane, he was critically injured. All right, gio. Thank you. And another rough night ahead for so many people. Now, i want to bring in abcs meteorologist, ginger zee because a lot of people are asking, is this the worst winter ever, one storm after another. Ginger . Diane, youve come to the right place. Ill show you why its happened. The jet stream acts as a conveyor belt. So, we see it here on the map. Just storm after storm. We get the moisture from the south and all that cold air that we know has been in place. And its storm after storm. Just like we said, on the heels of each other. But how we remember it may be different. And in some places, generationally. Look at this picture from west michigan. Remember that snowdrift, almost over the school. And from earlier this month in atlanta, the frozen fountains. So, do the numbers stack up as much as our memory does . Yes. In chicago, certainly. Last year, it was only eight inches or so at this point. 20some is about average. And this year, close to 60 already in chicago. Now, that does put them already in their topten seasons ever snowfallwise. But to get to number 1, theyd have to get to 90. Dont know that we could do that or want to. 43 days until spring. Diane . Thank you so much, ginger. The weather news tonight. And next, here, word of a new video from that horrifying shooting in the Movie Theater. Reporter oulsons wife, nicole, was sitting right next to him when he died. She, too, wept in court today. She told abc news in january, that the retired policeman should be put away. I dont want him to see daylight ever again. Reporter the sheriffs deputy who was inside the theater and kept reeves there until police arrived, said he overheard reeves speaking to his wife. And then, he leaned back around and stuck his finger out as if to scold her and said, you shut your [ bleep ] mouth and dont say another word.
