Thousands of cars. Is yours on the list . Good evening. And its great to start another week with you. And we begin tonight with two major weather headlines. First, a massive heat wave already stretching across much of this country, about to scorch the east, too. Heres the map at this hour, with the humidity the heat index. Well above triple digits from st. Louis to atlanta, then in the next 24 hours, philly, through new york and new england. In the west at this hour 23 fires across five states. One of the largest, outside sacramento tonight. Firefighters capturing these images from the ground. Air tankers, fighting the giant wildfire from above. The fire shooting up against the night sky overnight. Firefighters injured. Evacuations under way this evening. Hundreds of homes at risk. Ginger zee on the heat wave but first, matt gutman on the front lines tonight. Reporter tonight, an onslaught from the air and the ground. Those flames, fueled by heat and 30mileperhour winds, proving too much for four firefighters, badly burned when the fire overran them. Undaunted, brigades of firefighters continue to battle. Hundreds evacuated with the fire only 20 contained. The willow fire near fresno also breathing flames, torching more than 1,500 acres and forcing the evacuations of people from 450 homes. Tonight, 23 significant wildfires lighting up the west. Authorities tell us those fires were mostly started by lightning, but this one may have been started by a cars exhaust. That heat about 150 degrees, can ignite grass like this. Back in grass valley, we caught up to logan toney. I see you cut a bunch of trees down. How many have you felled . We felled about 70. Reporter 70 frees . Hacking down his livelihood to save his home. David, firefighters thought they had stopped this fire on this ridge line, but the wind kicked up and the fire has, too. Now its all around them. Now, more bad news for firefighters here. Temperatures forecast to soar above 100 degrees for the next three days. David . Thank you, matt. Lets get right to chief meteorologist ginger zee tracking the situation, and the weather is not helping. Reporter no. The temperatures just like matt said look that high moves in, it stays in place. How low humidity. Gusty winds, we could see record highs in places like sacramento tomorrow, going to 104. Now, from the fires to the potential heat wave across much of the country, its going to feel well above triple digits . Reporter already is. Kansas city to st. Louis in an excessive heat warning. That goes through tomorrow night. So those are the actual air temperatures. Little rock will get to 100, and that means it could feel like its almost 110. Then the warm front moves to the north and east. And look, tallahassee to new york in the 90s. New york city could see the first heat wave weve seen in two years this week. So, take this very seriously. Ginger, thank you. Tonight, a major scare for a flight headed to dallas. It took off from beijing, and then this. Something you do not see every day. Look. Right here the brand new American Airlines passenger jet. The nose of the plane there, smashed in as it hit a storm. Turning back within an hour of takeoff. More than 200 passengers. And here tonight, abcs clayton sandell. Reporter the brand new plane boeing 787 dreamliner took off from beijing, helded to dallas ft. Worth. An American Airlines flight with 222 passengers and crew. 44 minutes into the flight, the plane hit severe weather, including hail, forcing the plane back to beijing. It touches down safely. But this photo claims to show a damaging punch to the nose. Hail can damage an airplane to the point where it brings it down. If it daniels engines, control surfaces it can make an airplane unflyable. Reporter in june a delta 747 was forced to land after hail pummeled the nose and wings so badly, it was grounded permanently. The 747 is made of carbon fiber, and thats very difficult to repair. That airplane may be sitting in beijing for a long while. Reporter as for the passengers, no one was hurt. And the airline says they will soon be rebooked. David . Clayton, thank you. And one more terrifying moment for passengers. This rocky landing, look at this in amsterdam. That is a klm boeing 777, trying to land there in heavy winds. It begins to rock from side to side. You can see the wings dangerously close to the ground but how about those pilots tonight, getting that plane to land and safely . Back here at home this evening, and to florida now, and to an urgent search for two 14yearold boys who went fishing over the weekend in the atlantic, than vanished when their boat capsized. Tonight, authorities releasing these images they boat flipped over there. And the coast guard revealing one thing on board thats giving them hope that those boys just might still be alive. And here tonight, abcs kendis gibson. Reporter tonight, new images of that capsized boat belonging to two missing florida teenagers. A coast guard swimmer surveying the damage. Thats a negative. We just confirmed nobody is on board. We are trying to find any other gear. Reporter the boat, located 67 nautical miles off central florida, found exactly two days after Austin Stephanos and perry cohen set out on a fishing trip. The boys bought 122 worth of fuel right here before setting off on their trip. The last person to see them, telling me, they had a cooler and four fishing rods inside the boat. Even at 14 years old, both are fully licensed to operate a boat on their own, posting on social media friday they were off to the bahamas. Their families reporting them missing a few hours later. Tonight, riding an emotional roller coaster. For me, when they told me the boat was found capsized, it was a relief in a way. And it was horribly scary. Reporter now, the coast guard and navy are looking as far north as georgia. A search area equivalent to the size of west virginia. Is there hope that theyre alive . Theres always hope.
