Devoted husband, an Unlikely Hero in every role. Good evening. David is off. Im dan harris. The world is seething tonight about the treatment of the dead from malaysia air flight 17. Today armed prorussian rebels seized the 196 bodies that emergency workers had recovered from that farm land in Eastern Ukraine where the plane went down on thursday. The rebels are holding the bodies inside these train cars in a nearby rail yard. Recent pictures like this one of Crash Victims laying on the side of the road with strangers free to pick through their personal belongings have outraged the victims families and World Leaders. We have full coverage tonight starting with abcs terry moran whos on the ground. Reporter good evening. Tonight the crash site and the bodies of the victims remain firmly in the control of the rebels here while the u. S. Builds a damming case against them and against Vladimir Putins russia. All day emergency workers carried on their grim work of gathering bodies but theres no investigation being done here for wounds or other potential evidence on or around the bodies, the bags just laid out along the roads and turned over to rebel authorities who are taking them to a nearby village for storage. Inside these refrigerated boxcars lie the remains of nearly 200 of the dead of flight 17. For nearly three days they lay out in the sun at the crash site. Their ultimate destination remains unknown and in dispute. Theyre in limbo. The crash site itself still unguarded. All the evidence still unexamined. 102 bodies still unaccounted for from the crash. Abc news spoke exclusively with the rebels Prime Minister who told kirit radia hes keeping all the bodies until International Experts arrive. But the u. S. Government continues to build a case against the rebels and russia. Secretary of state kerry leveling a blunt indictment on this week. There are an enormous array of facts that point at russias support for and involvement in this effort. Reporter among those facts, the u. S. Claims, a Missile Launch from a rebelheld area was detected by u. S. Intelligence at the time the Malaysian Airlines flight vanished from contact with the ground. Audio intercepts released by ukraine of rebel leaders discussing the shootdown. Determined to be authentic by u. S. Analysts. U. S. Sighting of a russian convoy of 150 vehicles carrying heavy military equipment entering ukraine last weekend. Abc news has learned that three antiaircraft Missile Systems were brought down before the shootdown and were quickly spirited back across the border after. Russia has armed the separatists, russia has supported the separatists, russia has trained the separatists. Reporter this video shot friday apparently showing a worker recovering what looks like the planes flight recorder, rebel leaders now claiming they are holding both the planes black boxes. A new tape released by the Ukrainian Government seems to provide more evidence, rebel leaders talking about hiding those black boxes on instructions from moscow, saying they must be under our control. Dan . Terry, thank you. The reaction to the chaos at the crash site has been swift and severe, the fury both personal and political directed at the rebels and the man perceived to be their patron, vladimir putin. As families mourn and World Leaders issue angry statements, the big question tonight, will any of this change putins behavior. Abcs lama hasan is in amsterdam. Reporter good evening, dan. Memorial services are being held across the netherlands today to remember the victims of mh 17. For this country that has lost 192 people, that raw grief is so visible here. At schiphol airports growing memorial of flowers they were lining up to pay respects today. Rita and her brother mohammed knew two of the passengers. Unbelievable. Unfair. I hope justice will be done. It was unjustified. Unjustified. It wasnt a plane crash. It was id say an act of terrorism. Reporter but that anguish is beginning to turn into anger, anger aimed squarely at the prorussian rebels in control of the crash site. The rebels and how respectless they are doing things now with the bodies and they dont allow the rescue teams in the area. Thats not acceptable. Reporter World Leaders now agreeing to apply additional sanctions on russia, even considering banning putin from a g20 meeting of the worlds most powerful nations in november. I think that this is the worst crime in his political life. If he wants to avoid becoming an International Pa riah, he needs to withdraw everything he has in Eastern Ukraine, pretty much instantly. Reporter regardless of what president putin does here in the netherlands, the damage has already been done. Indeed it is. We can see the sorrow displayed right behind you. Thank you. Be sure to tune into gma first thing in the morning for the overnight developments in what is a very fastmoving story. We move to a gamechanging development in another international crises, the israeli incursion into gaza. Late today hamas, the palestinian militant group, announced it had captured an israeli soldier. If this is true it could add a dangerous dynamic to a war that saw its deadliest day today. Abcs Alex Marquardt is in gaza. Reporter wild celebrations tonight in the streets of gaza after hamas claims to have captured an israeli soldier, his name and i. D. Number read triumphantly on hamas tv. Israel has not commented and its unknown if hes alive or dead. If true its a potential game changer. The last israeli soldier hamas took captive was traded for 1,000 palestinian prisoners. It comes on a day when 13 Israeli Soldiers were killed, including two israeli americans, as Israel Presses deeper into gaza. Street after street unprecedented scenes of devastation and carnage. A flood of palestinian families running, but not knowing where to go. What did you see in there . What was happening . Reporter the israelis hit us from every side, this man told me, no distinction between militants and civilians. Over 100 palestinians were killed today. At the morgue, the smell of death overpowering. Bodies have been streaming out of this morgue all day. This is just one of six killed in a Single Family in the assault on the eastern gaza neighborhood. Amid a sea of tears, the grief for many too much to bear. This morning, its nothing short of a massacre, a deliberate massacre. War crimes committed daily. But now theres a deliberate shelling and bombing and destruction of whole areas. Reporter israel had warned residents to evacuate and accuses hamas of using civilians as human shields. We have to take action. What hamas is doing is embedding its rockets, its tunnels, terror tunnels in homes, hospitals and schools. Reporter president obama spoke with Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu today expressing his serious concern over the growing death toll in gaza. With israel and hamas farther than ever from a ceasefire, secretary of state john kerry is going to cairo to help broker a deal. Dan . Well have his work cut out for him. Thank you. Back at home tonight were covering another major breaking story, the merger of four separate wildfires in the west coming together to make one giant inferno. Take a look at this new drone video showing the postapocalyptic scenes left behind, including scorched homes standing right next to property thats unscathed. Abcs brandi hitt is on the front lines. Shes in washington state. Brandi, good evening to you. Reporter firefighters are using this critical time to try and get ahead of this raging wildfire, performing backbreaking work that could finally give them the upper hand. Inch by inch these are the men and women on the front lines creating a critical perimeter around the carlton complex wildfire that has been burning out of control for nearly a week. Were trying to protect this side of the orchard so it doesnt blow up on us. Reporter what started as four small fires sparked by lightning has exploded into one large monster fire consuming at least 237,000 acres. Despite an allout assault from the air and more than 1,300 firefighters on the ground, flames continue to run wild, burning more than 150 homes. Very volatile in all of these areas. Reporter this drone video captures the massive devastation from the raging fires. At the command center sheriff Frank Rodgers says they are now relying on reinforcements from across the country. Nobody in this county has enough Fire Equipment to deal with Something Like this ever. Reporter these firefighters will work up to 16 hours a day for 14 days straight. They say if they save one more home, its well worth it, dan. Such important work. Brandi hitt, thank you. From fire now to another primordial fear, the ground opening up beneath your feet. Thats what is happening tonight to an entire neighborhood in central florida, a giant sinkhole forcing families out of their homes. Abcs matt gutman is on the story. Reporter as these homeowners slept, a massive sinkhole swallowing up the earth beneath them. Growing more than 100 feet across and 30 feet deep. Out of nowhere the earth just went straight up in the air, exploded up in the air straight up. Reporter crumpling asphalt like cardboard, all in just 30 minutes. Four homes evacuated, police ordering people to get out. Its just 50 miles from a town where last year a man who was sleeping in his bed was killed in a sinkhole. Months before that, this condo sinking right into the earth caught on tape. About 20 of the country is vulnerable to sink holes but florida has more than any other state, about 60 a year. Because the ground is full of limestone and sinkholes generally form when limestone is eaten away by water. Are there any ways to detect whether or not you have a sinkhole in or around your house . Very expensive and difficult to do. It might only be good for as long as the test is done. Reporter as for this sinkhole which doubled in size in just a few hours, its now stable but will soon be filled in with cement. Most of the people who live here have been given the all clear to return home. Matt gutman, abc news, miami. Matt, thank you. Tonight we are hearing for the first time from a man who found himself in a situation so desperate he was convinced he was going to die. How he survived for six days out in the wild involved not only astonishing grit but extraordinary ingenuity. Heres abcs marci gonzalez. Reporter this is more than a badly broken leg. Its evidence of an amazing survival story. The situation turned into a life or death scenario. Reporter greg hein was hiking alone, 13,000 feet up in an isolated area of the Sierra Nevada earlier this month when a boulder slammed into his leg. He couldnt walk and knew it would be days before anyone started looking for him. Kind of incapacitates you. Reporter so he wrapped his leg in an air mattress, made a splint out of hiking sticks and a belt, then slowly dragged himself down the mountain to an area where rescuers would be able to see him. I was going to crawl out or someone was going to rescue me. Reporter for six days he survived by eating bugs and drinking melted snow until finally a search team spotted him. They almost flew directly over me and didnt see me, and then finally when they did see me i kind of breathed a deep sigh of relief. Reporter now home from the hospital, the pain still intense, but the perspective he says he gained, priceless. Having those six days of just living with purpose is quite refreshing, really. To really be thankful for what you have in your life. Reporter hes coming away from this with gratitude and some practical lessons for anyone planning to hike alone. The one thing he says he should have had, a satellitelinked device that could have shown search teams exactly where to find him. Brave guy, very tough, too. Absolutely. Marci, thank you.
