Good evening and thank you for joining us. David is off tonight. Im cecilia vega. We begin in the middle east where the israelis and palestinians are teetering on the edge of an allout war. Thousands of palestinians who live in the gaza strip are on the move. Families heeding israels warning that new attacks to destroy rocket launchers there could come at any time. What is not yet clear, will those attacks come from Israeli Ground forces now at standby at the border or from the air . This new video shows palestinian rockets headed for israel and then that launch site being destroyed when israelis fire back. We have Team Coverage across the region and we begin with abcs chief Global Affairs corespondent, Martha Raddatz in jerusalem tonight. Martha . Reporter good evening, cecelia. Its clear tonight that this conflict is escalating with israel sending those commandos into gaza to look for hamas rockets, the first time israel has sent Ground Troops into gaza in more than five years. They entered gaza from the Mediterranean Sea in small boats, several dozen navy commandos, israels navy s. E. A. L. S equivalent to destroy several hamas longrange rocket launchers. But hamas militants spotted the small team, four israelis were slightly wounded before they headed back to the boats. Thats when an attack helicopter targeted the militants. There was a huge engagement and we took out the capabilities and the terrorists. Reporter but israel is a long way from destroying the hamas stockpile, depleting only 20 of the estimated 10,000 hamas rockets. Today alone, hamas fired close to 100 several deep into israel. This one hitting in the town of ashkelon, and seriously wounded a 16 yearold israeli teenager. But so far, no israelis have been killed, thanks to the multimillion dollar iron dome. The Defense System substantially funded by the u. S. Has a sophisticated radar able to detect rocket launches. If the hamas rockets are heading for major population areas, the interceptor missile from the dome locks onto the rocket, and destroys it. But if that system should fail and there are extensive israeli casualties, there would almost certainly be a larger Israeli Ground attack. Then you would have to go on the ground . There would not be any other choice, but even without that, we might still have to go in out of our own need to take away these capabilities. Reporter in the coming days, there are more smallscale israeli raids expected. But in gaza, theyre expecting a much larger attack. My colleague Alex Marquardt is there. Reporter martha, fear tonight as thousands of palestinians flee their homes in northern gaza after a warning from israel. American citizens getting out as the death toll rises. Reporter escape from gaza. This convoy heading to the border early this morning. Onboard, almost 150 american citizens, allowed by israel to flee the relentless bombardments. We meet the ashaka family from baton rouge, louisiana. They were here visiting family, a Summer Vacation that is now in a war zone. The bombs would just come randomly and you wouldnt know where they were bombing or why they were bombing. Reporter they walked down the long tunnel to the border with israel, the first stop on their journey home. Once out of gaza, the relief is bittersweet. Little bit sad behind me because my family over there. You know . Reporter her family and so many here not as lucky. Today we visited a school, classrooms now shelters for the displaced who fled here after israel dropped leaflets saying they were going to bomb the neighborhoods. I hope to god we can break israel and win, this woman told me. In the name of god, we will beat them. But no one is winning. Today the funerals for 18 members of one family after the home of gazas police chief was hit by israel. He was wounded. Joining more than a thousand others as the death toll reaches now more than 170. Israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu said he regrets any attacks on civilians. But accused hamas of hiding behind them. He said israel is stepping up its operations against hamas. Cecelia . Alex and martha, thank you both.
